Your points are all valid. The thing is, if the Spanish would let the Basque people have a vote on independence, then there would be no reason for ETA to exist. But I would say your description of them as "gangsters" is better than that Franco fan's description of them as nazis. Anyway, just because an organization is on the terrorist list, doesn't mean they really are terrorists. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
I'm basque and so were all my ancestors as far as I can tell. My grandfathers and my grandfathers' grandfathers were all carlists in Nevarre and fought the carlist wars, and the spanish civil war. I still keep their red beret. It's true they fought (among other things) for the traditional laws and regional privileges, but they were and felt as spanish as basque, and they fought for a spanish king. They used to sing "long live spain and basque country, and long live the legitimate king".
My father's family is a good deal Basque (our name says that we come from Naverre). He once told me that we had anarchist relatives in Spain that owned what he called an island, but I think that he must have been mistaken. This really makes me want to travel to Naverre some time. I hear that there's a Basque language program that even has the same name.
..., the implementation of forced labor in prisons and the use of the death penalty and heavy prison sentences as deterrents for his ideological enemies.
@zviadan the Georgian origin of the Basque people is only a theory but it is not demonstrated, it is only based in grammar similarities between Georgian and Basque languages. Most of historians think, as it is said in the video, that Basque people are an isolated ethnic group, with no relation with other ethnic groups, that have lived here since Paleolithic Ages.
Also, if you didn't know, ETA formed to fight against the fascist dictatorship of Fransisco Franco, who won the Spanish Civil War with support from Benito Mussolini's Italy and Adolf Hitler's Germany.
@kloiten Actually there is a BIG difference between a group that intentionally targets civilians and a group that only targets military and economic targets using every precaution to avoid civilian causualties.
It is true that there are still Celtic areas of Spain such as Galiza (Galicia) and Asturia. But in ancient times the Celts once ruled most of the Iberian peninsula and France (which was known as Gaul). Also, until the expansions of the Roman Republic and Germanic tribes, the British Isles and much of continental Europe was predominantly Celtic.
@DroidNoid P 2 Also I would add that related languages to Basque may have been spoken but not one Proto-Basque in areas of Western Europe. Since we do not know if related languages where spoken in most of Western Europe or not in a larger amount we should state it as a possibility not as a clear cut fact. We have to remember when it comes to Basque language early history and pre-history not much is known with certanity. We should be a bit carefull before we as if we know for sure. Regards :)
@joco3k I'm not of Basque descent so I don't know if Renteria is a Basque name. But I can tell you that singer on this video is from Ireland. Moya Brennan is the English spelling of her Irish name Máire Ní Bhraonáin.
And if ETA had no popular support, then why would Spain ban Batasuna? If it had no chance to win in elections, then what is Spain afraid of? Sinn Fein was still legal in the 1980s and 1990s, even though the British government claimed it was "the political wing of the IRA".
In Middle Age there were no voluntary joints because in those times there were no referenda, only conquests. In century XVI Western Basque people took part in the conquest of Navarre because they were part of Castille and were forced to do it. As Milanese people when Milan was part of Spain, were forced to fight against other Italian people.
I am also Basque, and by Basque I mean Basque speaker, not someone who lives in the Basque Country... I am from the North, so administratively speaking I am French, and I have studied in the South (still administratively speaking, Spain), so I am very lucky to know the three cultures and I can assure you that they do not have anything in common.
@nanako0590 the basque is older than Hannibal and no one can say where is it from maybe can be influenced by the Maghbreb in some aspects but is not from this language
@thomastviler Basque has nothing to do with germanic languages, infact its not related to any of the indo-european languages including latin where it influenced their lands. Little information is known about it's origin. Hopefully it never dies.
@gipuzku hello im a basque im from california and i want to know why is spain trying to take complete control over the entire basque country, i mean when i tell ppl that im basque they always say the same thing wtf is that?lol then i have to explain where it is an all that. an i want to know how long its been going on for and why?
@MrFrimuraren Sabino Arana was a racist and Basque supremacist, but he died in 1903 and ETA wasn't formed until 1959. He was the founder of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), but ETA took a far different stance regarding race. ETA's ideology is more of a leftist version of Basque nationalism, explained in Federico Krutwig's 1963 book Vasconia. Krutwig's vision was anti-religious and based upon language and culture rather than race.
@HerrOttoKranz I never said that ETA had not ever targeted civilians. My statement was more in regards to grouping together a movement like the PIRA (Provisional irish Republican Army) which for the most part used every effort to avoid civilian casualties, with groups like Aum Shinrikyo, the UVF(Ulster Volunteer force) or Al-Qaeda who intentially target civilians as a strategic tactic.
@zviadan I understand your point. I have observed similarities between the Basques and the Gaelic people as well. I think that it is through these sort of cross cultural connections that we begin to better understand each other. I think what fueled my initial response was that he made it seem as though this version of the theory of the origins of the Basques was widely accepted and distributed. I, being of Basque origin, have never heard this idea before. I learn new things everyday:-)
@thomastviler Just some theories linguistic researchers have published. Basque is related to older Vasconic languages, such as Aquitanian, ancient Cantabri, ancient Iberian Language, and perhaps the Tartessian language. But according to French linguist Michel Morvan, there appears to be a distant connection with Northeast Caucasian languages such as Chechen. Cheers.
@Kakapirra Veamos si uno de los 4 idiomas es el ingles,,, o simplemente es el español, el castellano, un poco de euskera y un poco de vascuence( o sea, Agur y poco mas)!!! Un navarro!!
Yes, I actually pretty much totally agree with you there. I think they may need to take the Northern Ireland model. Sign a permanent cease-fire, hash out peace negotiations that include a referendum on independence at a later date, and disband and decommission the paramilitaries. But yes, the Basque Country may be the only area of Spain with any armed groups to deal with, but Galiza and Catalonia want their freedom as well. They just choose to do it strictly through political means.
My parents are from mexico.both of my parents tell me their grandparents were of europen. My dads last name is Renteria and my mothers is Moya. Are these Basque names???
Nice to see another language in Europe standing its own ground against the "HEAVYWEIGHT KILLER LANGUAGES" of ur neighbours. Hang in there my brothers and sisters and keep passing on ur traditions and BEAUTIFUL LANGUAGE With determination EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE Outmost respect: From an Albanian
Spain, Espanha or Hispania are just latin derived terms with the same meaning as the greek term "Iberia". Inside Iberian Peninsula there are many different peoples and countries, not only the official 3
@breizhcatalonia1993 How did you come to this conclusion? Where is your supporting evidence for this statement? Perhaps it is the Georgians and Russians who are the distant descendants of the Basques. Perhaps if we were to use your method of determining the origins of a people, it would be safe to assume that all Catalans come from Peru, and all Eskimos come from Catalonia. According to your method, anything is possible:0
@breizhcatalonia1993 yes, Basques come from Georgia and Caucasus(north Caucasus is part of Russia) and we accept Basques as our brothers! Their people, especially in mountanous regions are very similar to Georgians in every aspect, even though that such a long time has gone after they left Caucasus
I just wanted to say that the majority of the Basque people do not approve the violence, I think we just want to preserve our culture and especially our language, because they are ancient and beautiful and we cannot let them disappear because of the French and the Spanish supremacies or economic/linguistic policies.
@OTRACUENTAPERRA First of all the fight for freedom of the Basque Country has nothing to do with "Supremacy" as you put it. The fight is so the Basque people can have their own independent homeland (as is same for the Catalonia and Galicia regions which also want to separate from Spain) not because they think they are "better" than the Spanish people. Second, in 2011 ETA declared a "permanent, general and verifiable" ceasefire with the expressed aim of ending its campaign.
Ah, I am not but I learned more about it after I learned about the Connolly Column, the Irish volunteers that fought on the republican side during the Spanish Civil War. Then I learned more in the context of my research on the Basque Country, Galiza, Catalonia, etc. I'm actually 3/4 (75%) Irish, 1/8 (12.5%) German, and 1/8 (12.5%) English. Don't forget your Breton blood though, because that makes us Celtic cousins! Britanny is one of the 8 Celtic nations.
It's because of historical grievances. If it was Syria asking you to "assimilate" into their nation after taking over Lebanon by force, you would feel the same way the Basque people feel about being forced into the country of Spain.
Franco maintained his control in Spain through the implementation of repressive and authoritarian measures: the systematic suppression of dissident views through censorship and coercion, the institutionalization of torture, the imprisonment of ideological enemies in concentration camps throughout the country (such as Los Merinales in Seville, San Marcos in León, Castuera in Extremadura, and Miranda de Ebro)...
@xantitruktals do you think you could communicate with a '' Basque '' speaker for 8000 years ago. And no the language is not older other languages from all we know. But it is the soley survivor of a now dead language familiy. Since it has no modern living relativs and has been spoken there for as long back as we can go back. While Spanish has tons of living relativs.
je n'ai pas beaucoup de notions de basque mais je pense que ce ne serait ruano mais gorki ou gorka dont l'origine serait gori le rouge, mieux renseignez vous sur ce site il y a des eushkaldunak (ceux qui parlent basque)
all problem holds in why people Afghan indo speak a language of ouralienne form but with a rhythmics and words European indo of content, and many people think that it is because they are ancient Siberian people (Russian thesis) and after the last genetic discoveries this theory becomes more than credible.
HB (Herri Batasuna was banned in 2002 following the new Political Parties Act passed in the central Parliament, the new act prevented political parties from supporting armed groups. they already know a lot and basques were not a lot of time before in Siberia and in Caucasus, they find the similarity of language of type ouralienne with these people of type majority R1b in north Caucasus Cossacks Tcherkisses
We were an enormous country, a big part of kantabria, pirineos, rioja,.. belonged to us,now our laguage and culture area is becoming very little. we had our unique language, no one had to tell us what language we have to speak. BUt with the wars they imposed us a new culture. bipbiprichie1 you said that we need peace, yeah I´m agree, but if we are under French and Spanish we´ll never be in peace, anymore, we must fight for our rights! I´m proud f what I´m , not spanish not french, just BASQUE!
@patoman881 Russians are absolutely different people from Georgians and othe people of Caucasus. Its just that northern Caucasus is part of Russia, but we have nothing common with Russians. Russians are slavic people of Indo-european family and Georgians and the rest Caucasians are from Caucasus family, which is seperate and unique from other nations and Basques come from Georgia and even after so many years of that migration, there are still so many similarities between us in every aspects...
AMEN! God bless any people who are forced to take up arms against an opressive overbearing occupational government like Spain & the UK!! FREE BASQUE! FREE IRELAND!!
Almost whole historical information is correct except the information about the voluntary joint of the Western provinces to Castille. Alava was invaded in 1200 and after 132 years of Castillian occupation was annexed to Castille. Guipuzcoa was conquered and annexed to Castille in 1200. In century XII there were wars between Navarre and Castille and Biscay left under the influence of Castille and in 1516 was annexed to Castille. So all of them were conquered to the Basque Kingdom (Navarre)
@sunshineloveYO What language r u talking about? Basque country is in Spain and everyone speaks spanish, onlya minority also speaks Basque. As a matter of fact, the lehendakari(President of the Basque Country) does not speak Basque and is learning now!!
ez dakit artaburu horrek ze esaten duen euskaldunen inguruan, baina beste bideo batzuetan argi utzi du euskaldunok espainiar garela. bakizue beti-betikoak...
of course it´s basque !!! it seems quite a lot to other basque surnames like Lizarraga, Arrizabalaga, Larraga and so many others that have that -aga ending that states in the basque toponimy for something which is found abundantly. In basque it would be written like Burziaga, but I can´t find its meaning anywhere....you´ll have to find it yourself!! cheerss!!
@DroidNoid That how ever do not say if the Basque language acenstor was nopt spoken before LGM or not that is a hard question because language and culture and genes are not allways strictly connected. For an example newer migrants may have just adapted the native populations language and the oither way around. Not sayiong your wrong but just wanted to add :)
@Tyler1er You can tell you're from California... Spain is not trying to take control over anything, you should inform yourself better before talking crap. Spain is, along with germany the most devoluted country in Europe. The Basques collect their own taxes, have their own parliament, approve their own laws, have their own Police, TV stations, schools and universities, Basque is the official language along with Castilian (that's Spanish for you). Basque culture was never so lively
@gipuzku The permanence of the Basque culture is granted by the Spanish Constitution approved in 1978. I remind you the Constitution guarantees the right of the different Spanish regions and nationalities to self-government. From 1979 the Basque Country and other Spanish regions have their own parliament that rule the regions over nearly everything. No region in Europe has more power than the Basque Country or Catalonia, for that matter
the opposite is distinctly more real, basques are Basque, if it has to be something else, it would be then Gaelic, then how to imagine seriously that they are considered French or Spanish
Well, I'm comparing them as far as trying to dominate their neighbors. The modern nation of Spain has at least their regions that want their own independent countries, or at least expanded autonomy (the Basque Country, Catalonia, and Galiza) and they are all Roman Catholic. They all speak their own languages, not Spanish and have their own distinct cultures. Trust me, it's the same way the British have forced Northern Ireland into the UK even though 45% of its population wants freedom
Those who in 1980 declined to stop terrorism kept on with their terrorist campaign under the name of ETA Militar (Military ETA) even when there was already a Basque parliament with a new home rule and the central government was being clement with those ready to stop terrorism. From then on ETA's goal is to pretend that Spain is still a dictatorship and the Basque Country is an oppressed region with no civil liberties. Until 2002 ETA's political branch, HB was represented in the Basque parliament
Im basque and i speak my lenguage, BASQUE. However i also speak spanish, but i dont feel mybody spanish cuz i think we are just Basque ppeople, froma Basque Countru...its true that we dont need ETA, but neither Spain!
Your points are all valid.
The thing is, if the Spanish would let the Basque people have a vote on independence, then there would be no reason for ETA to exist.
But I would say your description of them as "gangsters" is better than that Franco fan's description of them as nazis.

I am half-Basque (and part French, Welsh, and Dutch), so it is interesting to see this video.
Thanks!
I enjoyed this very much, thank you.
@zutoya58 The singer is Moya Brennan.
Thanks for the comment!
I agree.
All people deserve the right to self-determination.
GREAT VIDEO
I'm basque and so were all my ancestors as far as I can tell. My grandfathers and my grandfathers' grandfathers were all carlists in Nevarre and fought the carlist wars, and the spanish civil war. I still keep their red beret. It's true they fought (among other things) for the traditional laws and regional privileges, but they were and felt as spanish as basque, and they fought for a spanish king.
@asierbermejo
Thank you sir :)

Not sayiong your wrong but just wanted to add :)
there is my homeland right there....viva euskadi!!!
@Tyler1er
You can tell you're from California...
Is just the opposite way. Es respeto lo que no puede faltar....
@gipuzku
The permanence of the Basque culture is granted by the Spanish Constitution approved in 1978.
Euskal herria maitxia, gora geu da geutarrak
@Sanbev the basque country's lenguage is euskera and i know speak it....sorry my english is bad
@Eopyk corsetry country..perhaps a darker side? linquinstically and cutrually assimulatted...
Thanks anyway blunt1984.
