    I use to watch a Gary Vaynerchuk way back when he just did a Wine tasting. Some of his approaches were pretty applicable. In one training he would set out a table full of items for taste training. Items used as descriptors in flavor notes for wine/coffee tasting. Helps build/train the taster's reference library when moving forward with coffee cupping. Thought that was a novel idea.

    Loved this tutorial! Been drinking coffee since I was a kid (didn't mess me up... probably) and just got into home roasting my own about 2 years ago. Can't believe I didn't start that sooner. Upgraded from a Whirley Pop on my propane camp stove to a Behmor last year and having a blast experimenting with different beans and roast profiles. Now trying to get better at cupping so I know what I'm roasting, or at least sound like I do to impress our friends. Really liked how you explained what you were doing and looking for; very helpful. Biggest tip that I heard somewhere for kind of jumpstarting tasting ability was to drink a really dark, like French Roast, for about a week prior to seriously trying a nuanced tasting. World of difference right there and I was able to pick up on all sort of notes that I completely overlooked before. Keep up the great videos!

I was just talking to a guy today who was roasting on one and had some questions. What are you plans for the future with it? You planning to just stay home roasting or eventually start a roastery or something down the road?

      @@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee Probably common story; love coffee, discovered I could actually take a green coffee bean and turn it into something palatable and maybe even enjoyable, thought to myself "Hey! I could really get into doing this as a business and shift out of my current career in corporate life over the next couple years!", then life happened. I'll be home roasting for the rest of my life, even if I have to use one of my iron skillets over a campfire. That said, I haven't given up on the idea of moving towards testing the waters of moving up to a business. We have some local roasteries in the area that are pretty well established and have a good product, but I still prefer my own beans over theirs. Not sure if it's because I'm roasting according to my own preferences or if it's like growing your own vegetables and hunting your own meat; tastes better because you did it through your own efforts.

    I have a tip for everyone! I went to a local roaster and just told them that i wanted to try cupping, and i asked for some bean samples (I also bought a couple bags that I was interested in most). They gave me 4 samples with around 80-100 grams each. So ask your local roaster! They will probably help you out! So I did my first cupping and I followed your method. I didnt know what I was doing very much, but it was such an interesting experience. I learned how vastly different coffee can smell and taste, and how much I preferred one coffee to another. I wanted to ask if anyone else had trouble discerning tastes between darker roasts. I found that they mostly tasted just smelled/tasted very carbony... So i bought some light roast from another roaster to try tomorrow. Good luck everyone!

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
      @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee  Před 3 lety

      This is so cool!! Ya, some roasters are nice and will share knowledge and stuff and if you can find one that’s awesome. I agree darker coffees are harder to cup because after a certain point you roast all of the “notes” that might be detected in the coffee out and replace the notes with carbon, roasty, bitter flavors. The further you get passed second crack the similar all the coffees are going to taste no matter the quality or origin. Light roasts (and even well roasted medium roasts) will have more of the fruity/floral/chocolate notes that people talk about. I rarely roast passed medium unless somebody else is drinking it and wants it that way.
      Super cool they were able to hook you up like that though!

      Thanks so much for watching! I truly appreciate it the feedback! Ya that would be a tough decision. It’s nice as a customer to support someone that is roasting there own coffee as you have control over what is going out to them but cost wise it would be much easier to get it wholesale from a local roaster in the beginning. You wouldn’t have a ton of money sunk in a roaster and all that goes along with it. That way you can use that capital to expand and have if needed in the beginning. Once you get established and money is coming in this possibly get a roaster and add to your offerings. Where you from Travis?

      Great question man! Many of those professional cupped or “Q graders” really taste so much coffee during the day that they spit it out so they don’t overload on caffeine. If you are just doing a few samples then I would not worry about it. If I was cupping 20 samples late in the afternoon I would probably opt to spit it out.
