I was sold on the Dreamcast because of Shenmue alone back January 2002 when I finally saw the game running in front of me at a store while vacationing with my family. I had never bought a Sega console before that and I remember thinking "ok, so I'll stick with Sega this time around", as the PS2 was brand-new and way more expensive than the Dreamcast, it had fewer games by then, and it would *never* have frikkin' Shenmue! Well, as soon as I got back home and went online on the family's desktop computer (you see kids, this is how things worked back then), I was met with the barrage of news announcing the end of the system and that Sega would pull out from the console race. I was devastated for sure, and the 6th gen was the first one from which I eventually owned all consoles (at least the ones that mattered) but in hindsight, I would not like to have lived a life where that little story didn't happen. Playing Shenmue 1 & 2, Sonic Adventure 2 and Soul Calibur with my brother back in the day are and forever will be some of my most cherished and beloved gaming memories, and I'm glad that nothing except Alzheimer can take that away from me.
If you play the game on xmas it snows and there's a Santa clause. The only other game I remember doing that was commander blood on pc in 1995. Shenmue is clearly one of the best games of all time. It was years ahead of its time and you felt like a real person in an open world without limitations getting lost in its free feeling world and at the same time having an ultimate goal. 👍
Another game that did a similar thing was The Simpons Road Rage, on certain public holidays the such as Christmas, the game would give you a new character to play with (though only for the one day).
That is easy change the time and date of the dreamcast.

To say piracy was what brough down the dreamcast is not understanding the different issues it had to face, from competition with ps2 (the cheapest DVD in the market) and difficulties about programming games on it.
It wasn’t the rain deer
It was the Playstation 2 which killed it not the rain deer that you see on the boot disc not either the piracy at that time.

The reason the Dreamcast took the number 1 spot for my favorite console from my childhood console of the GameCube.
I've also backed Shenmue 3, and it's probably the best investment I've ever made!

Shenmue is my favorite game series of all time. Everything about it is perfect to me. Even the things that are technically "bad" (the tank controls, bad voice acting, waiting, mundane tasks) somehow make me love it more.

TBH I never played any of the Shemue titles. I've known how important they were but never crossed my mind to pick it up. After watching your video, I'm interested to see what I missed out on. Think I'll pick them both up and back the third too while I'm at it 🤘🤘
My only taste of anything related to Shenmue was its spiritual sucessor the Yakuza game series,which uses some of the same ideas and mechanics thta Shenmue games used
That is also because a huge chunk of the team went from Shenmue over to the Yakuza games directly after. The number two guy on Shenmue (Toshihiro Nagoshi) is the producer on that series.
That explains a lot actually..... SEGA, do a ShenmueXYakuza crossover after Shenmue 3.
Badre Bally I have played through Yakuza 1 and 2 and am making my way through 3 right now. Ever time I turn one of these games on it reminds me of what made Shenmue so special. For Yakuza they took Shenmue and took all the cool and special stuff out. What's left is a pretty good Action Adventure, but really nothing special.
Yakuza and Shenmue only have a few things in common. The setting (Japan, for Shenmue 1), the basic genre (martial arts), minigames, and city exploration. They are not at all similar in terms of atmosphere, level of detail, plot mood, pacing, attention to detail, scope of soundtrack, and the feel of the gameplay itself. Shenmue's combat is more gritty and tactical, it has a spiritual feel to it, it has a slow build up, it has adventure / investigation moments, and it's an absolute labour of love packed with hidden details. Yakuza is great, but it's not Shenmue.
Are there literally no other games like Yakuza and shenmue? I've been researching but have had no luck

I’ve got the Ryo/Lan Di statues in my game room facing off for eternity along with Shenmue I/II in the display. Once Shenmue III comes out my display will be complete. Long live SEGA damnit!!!!!

I would argue that the Dreamcast was also up against the PS1, still going strong in 98-99. It also outlived it with its last retail release in 2004.

I hate to say it, but I cannot believe that I am hearing someone else saying that the single most important thing to happen in 1983 was their birth. I too, was born in 1983, and must argue that in fact, the most important thing that happened that year was my birth , August 3, 1983.
The only way I can see the settle this is to compare birthdates and whoever came first was best

So...the Shenmue franchise as a whole, including the unfinished and ultimately canceled Saturn game, cost an estimated $15.66 million per game, basically. I didn't know that. Great video!

Some inaccuracies
FREE was not Fully Reacting, but Full Reactive
Shenmue was not released a month after Virtua Fighter 3TB. VF3 was released in Nov 1998, a Japanese launch title. But it is true that Shenmue came out in Japan in Dec 1999
Side note I was under the assumption the most expensive game of all time at that time was Wing Commander 4. According to IMDb it’s listed as a budget of 10million (hey, Luke Skywalker, biff tannen and Alex de large don’t come cheap)

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Yakuza series, it's like the crazy spiritual successor to Shenmue.
With the upcoming third game, they should remaster the first two. Most of us weren’t able to play it. Now that it’s the pioneer of open world games with rpg elements, the world is ready for them.
I think shenmue 3 should be made with the same style as S2 just smoothened out controls and visuals. That way they could release a trilogy set and you could go through them all and they would seem like one HUGE game :)

Just broke up with GF and got a flat on my own; sold my mega drive, dreamcast, PSP and DS to get a bit of money saved up as i was colossally skint...and the worst part is i took a stupidly low amount for them. I wont tell you how much haha :/
OUCH, i did the same back in the day, sold my entier mega drive collection and master system collection for £1 each so I could get extra dreamcast and VMUs for my dreamcast *facepalm*
To be fair though im no longer a collector in the sense that i'd ever want something like a full PAL SNES collection or a boxed only collection of sonic games for the mega drive. These days i'm more into getting everdrives and just building up a collection on there. The perfect inbetween of actual and emulated.
Also, I reckon sometimes its nice just to 'rip it up and start again' when it comes to collecting. In an ideal world sell the stuff I have for the right price, realise what a mistake it was and start to get some of the stuff back...but this time not buy bulk bids on ebay of mega drive, saturn and snes games i'll probably never even play!

Nicely Ryo is in Project X Zone 2 as a playable character. When you do part 2 add that. One thing you did miss on this is the Shenmue Windows Theme disc and more importantly the "What's Shenmue" dreamcast demo game which has it's own standalone mini-story. Chapter 2 also was skipped over as that's a comic that appears on the Xbox version of Shenmue 2. Beyond this, I think maybe a complete Shenmue History would do well to talk about how you can carry over items between the first two games and how back in the day there was even a save converter so people in the USA that imported Shenmue 2 from Pal territories could convert their saves to continue the adventure. That was a really cool feature. Beyond this, the fourth disc of Shenmue 1 was worth talking about. Granted this video is old but no doubt next year you'll be wanting to cover the ports of Shenmue 1 & 2 and Shenmue 3 which was just pushed to 2019. Shenmue 3 was my first kickstarter. I'm glad Yu Suzuki is finally getting to finish his masterpiece series.

Wow, you were born in 1983, I'm the same age as you! Great video although it would have been nice to get some behind the scenes info on the sequel. Shenmue pretty much started the QuickTimeEvent gameplay so common in today's games. So not having managed to get hold of the games how many chapters have been completed so far?

i just hope that shenmue 3 will do very good so that they will also remaster shenmue 1 and 2. i never really palyed 1 and 2 before, only a little bit of shenmue 1 and i already know i love the series. it reminded me of my favourite game series of all time: yakuza/ryu ga gotoku.many people say it is like a spiritual succesor to shenmue.

I don't wanna get too hyped for shenmue 3 because if it somehow doesn't come out I'd be genuinely gutted. I think Sega should do the remasters to just get them out there into people's hands. the fans would appreciate it and I believe they'd gain more fans who are willing to get shenmue 3.

Great vid on Shenmue! Anyone with the slightest interest in games need to know why Shenmue was (and still is) so great.
The stuff about Dreamcast is off though - the Xbox wasn't a rival, it came out long after the Dreamcast was killed off by Sega self destructing. Surely part of the reason Shenmue was able to be great was the Dreamcast hardware.

16:19 Ohh SEGA you big tease. This is not teasing players and fans this is true. November 19, 2019 is the release date of Shenmue, two days have past while I am typing this. Some stores and players sell and bought the game early before November 19, like 1 week early before the promised release date. And this is a MASSIVE HIT! Even the new generation of players liked it!
After my first week of playing Shenmue, I had this weird urge to go out and ask strangers for information.
Shenmue.... damn good open world game..... I STILL have my Dreamcast down in a box in the basement.... I think I gotta replay the 2 games again..... maxing up the moves... getting all the clues, collecting the action figures etc.... making a good amount of money. Damn you Mr Suzuki! I've been waiting for tooooooooo long! Now give me the good game!!! ;)

Damn it brought tears to see this i was so hyped up when i heard of a 16 chapter game for sega i just couldn't wait to play it and sadly it never came it only got 2 chapters and a online spin off ,I really hope that shenmue 3 can at least end the story
chris Plissken 16 chapters didn't mean 16 games. Shenmue 1 is chapter 1. Chapter 2 was supposed to be the time between Shenmue 1 and 2 and Shenmue 2 consists of chapters 3-6, or something like that.

Haha did anyone catch around 5:08 in the commercial that the Nintendo 64 is listed under "delayed" as the console did indeed face a lot of delays? That was clever lol
I can't quite make out what it says next to Sony Playstation, but I imagine it was referencing the uncertain launch date of that one as well at the time. I can't recall how many times (this might actually be a decent subject for a video as I don't really recall seeing one on it), but I think I remember at LEAST two delays for the N64, and maybe three or more.
Love that 1 second jab at Nintendo on the departures screen lol, Sega always had the most amusing commercials.
Sadly, in retrospect having all those Saturns listed under "departure" from the moment of launch seems like an ominous premonition as opposed to an announcement heh

Ohh, no I don't have any NFL games, I only know the rules because we used to play for fun and I watch a lot of the Canadian Football League, which has very similar rules.

Shenmue 3!?!? I didn't hear about that!!! in the immortal words of my 3 year old brother... I SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it strange that a 19 year old would rather play older video games rather than newer ones? I'm always on the prowl for old games maybe not quite retro but game cube original Xbox and ps2 back.

It's kind of eerie. Even Shenmue 3 got confirmed before Half-Life 3.
This fucking game caused me as much heart ache as I got joy from this game. When I got to the end of the first game and had to literally get a job moving boxes with a forklift to gain enough money to get an airplane ticket so I can go to where the guy who killed my father was and just as I got there the game ended I wanted to smash my console. I couldn't believe it but I heard the sequel was coming my anger subsided... Until Sega announces the Dreamcast will be no more! WTF!! Sure I could of tried to get the Japan version but I was young and knew not how to get it. I was devastated. Then years have passed and I got over it and was enjoying my next console the og Xbox and I seen Shenmue 2 and I couldn't believe my eyes! Then I delved right back into that world loving the shit out of it and just as I forgot the pain the game once caused me and was getting to the end and finally will avenge my father's death.... The fucking game ended again!!! So I wait.... and wait..... and wait for the third game... And here I am about 15 years later a broken man who lacks the ability to love. Lost and unfulfilled in life because of this fucking game.

I think your timeline of sega's rivalry is a bit off, as the Dreamcast was long dead before the gamecube was out. Otherwise Sonic Adventure 2 wouldn't have been a launch title for the GC.
I have always wondered what the big hype was that everyone has for this game since I have never played a Shenmue game but I think I might after seeing this video.

It is possible a lot of people who pirated on the Dreamcast never saw the Reindeer. It was not long before copied games autobooted.
I miss that reindeer...but at same time I feel bad for probably contributing to the system's demise. One of best consoles ever made.
Bought Shenmue 2 on Xbox last week, didn't play yet. Looks like I am missing something great
I owned dreamcast and had alot of games and even the joy sticks for it. Shemue is a game i was the hugest fan of and still never played shemue 2.i beat 1 with flying colors over and over again. S3 would be beautiful on xbox1 or ps4

Piratism didn't destroy dreamcast. Bad marketing and ps2 did.
