    I’m all for paying extra for pro versions of software. If the pro features are something I’m going to frequently use and they’re going to improve the quality of the user experience then I’m happy to shell out some cash. Being an old school software user (I’m talking way back, like MS Dos) I liked that you could buy a license and that was it. Most software gave you a lifetime license. One flat fee to use those features forever. What I don’t like is the insidiously greedy subscription model. Forking out money every month for as long as you continue to pay it. Because the payments are automated they keep coming out every month regardless of whether you use the software or not. Add up that subscription cost over a year or 5 years or 10 years and the totals become ridiculous. Honestly, I can find freeware that does just as good a job (if not better than) some pro products.

    • @Groundeffected
      @Groundeffected  Před 6 měsíci +2

      So while I do agree I wish we could pay once I also understand that software back in the day you got one version and when they updated it you never got that for free you had to buy the new version again. Since we have the internet now they are able to offer this update without you having to get in your car and drive to the shop only to find that your nearest store has already sold out their copies. And not only is there multiple updates a year but they’re constantly adding new features you never ever got that once you bought your version of a software on a hard disk. Also you’d be really really hard pressed to find a software that replaces pro version of lychee, and I mean the free version does so much already, if you just printing presupports then you can use the free version with no restrictions at all. And speaking of back in the day you never ever got any software for free…

    • @TheMugwump1
      @TheMugwump1 Před 6 měsíci

      Better freeware is definitely a moot point. Depending on your standards and what you're printing you may be fine with freeware.
      With how long it takes me to paint stuff, I can sub for a month and print enough for nearly a year.

    • @RuthlessMojo
      @RuthlessMojo Před 6 měsíci

      @@TheMugwump1 A moot point? So you’ve tested every piece of software that is open source or freeware? I was referring to software as a whole. Not just a 3D slicer. I’m 47 years old and have been in the IT industry since my teens. I have been an IT technician, software developer, web designer and developer, cybersecurity consultant, ethical hacker and digital media specialist and investigator. I have used countless amounts of software. From Freeware and Shareware to complete professional suites of software in just about every field. When I placed my comment I was stating my opinion. I’m not crapping on people who wish to spend their money on a “pro” version of a particular software. That’s you’re prerogative. It’s your money. Spend it how you wish. For me personally I am perfectly happy with the open source software that does just as good a job without the additional cost. As far as the subscription model goes it is ridiculous what some companies will charge for continued access to a software’s full features. Look at any of these mobile apps that want to charge you $7.99 a week just to use a photo editor or pdf viewer or whatever the case may be. It’s greedy and expensive. I can understand the subscription model for something like Netflix where they are consistently creating new content and paying for movie and television licensing. That makes sense. But does that make sense for something like this application where you may get a few tweaks here and there? Not really. Not when freeware is also continually updated and improved at no cost. But like I said that is just my opinion.

      @@Groundeffected Thanks for the reply. Let me state that my comment was merely my own opinion. I’m not criticising others who choose to subscribe to a “pro” version of software. It is your money and you have the right to spend it on whatever you please. Before I address some of the points you made in your comment I’d like to give you a history of my experience with software. In your comments you stated that: 1. “When a new version of software was released you had to purchase that.” Yes. That was true in a number of cases but you could also purchase lifetime licenses which would allow you to download new versions of software at no additional cost (I still have a lifetime license for McAfee Antivirus which I purchased in the 2000’s). That being said, most software companies would continue to update their previous releases for quite a few years until it was discontinued. I have some very specific pieces of software that I’ve used for the last 25 years that still run great that I purchased only once. 2. “Since we have the internet now we don’t have to purchase a physical copy of new software.” The internet as we know it now has been around since the 80’s and 90’s. I used to download updates frequently (even if it was on my crappy 33.6k dial up modem and would take hours). 3. “You never ever got new features with physical copies”. Again, I refer to the online update point I made previously. I don’t think I actually mentioned using physical copies of software. The ones I used I mostly downloaded (Again very slowly I might add). You could also get updates on disk (floppies or CD’s). I would purchase PC magazines which would always include patches and upgrades for software. 4. “You’d be hard pressed to find software that replaces the pro version of lychee”. I don’t doubt it. And that wasn’t the focus of my comment. I was specifically referring to the subscription model. It is ridiculous what some companies will charge for continued access to a software’s full features. Ultimately you’re the one who’s spending your money on these products. As long as you’re happy with paying for it that’s all that really matters. Hope I didn’t offend you. My comment wasn’t a slight on you or the lychee program itself. It was geared towards the subscription model as a whole. I really enjoy your content. You are a master painter. Your sculptures always look amazing.

    Ah... yes. Now I remember why I didn't switch to lychee. Unlike the other slicers, lychee REQUIRES that you create an account with them and refuses to run until you do / log in. While that in and of itself is a big no no for me, even worse is that, like the glowforge lasers, you cannot use this without an internet connection. Most people won't care, but... there are a few of us weirdos out there 🤠

    I've been using Lychee for 2 years and have been using the paid version. But recently I've switched to chitubox because the antialiasing in Lychee dosent work properly on the Saturn 2 and you can use the sphere shape at the tip of the supports. My prints have never looked better! Sorry Lychee, I love you man, but chitubox has you beat on the Saturn 2.
