Careful observation, artful reasoning, and a keen understanding of human behavior -- to say nothing of style and panache -- have made Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes an aspirational figure worldwide. But are his famous abilities achievable for the rest of us?
In this talk, Scientific American columnist Maria Konnikova will build on the ideas presented in her New York Times-bestselling book, "Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes," to help the audience develop habits of mind that can help put a dent in the universe.

Note to the cameraman: as much as I like looking at Maria while she’s speaking, I’ll like it better if I can see the slides she’s showing:)

This video explains why professionals I know who smoke pot regularly are universally heads-over in character and working intelligence compared to those who don't. It also explains why society has become a heartless brain-dead antidepressant-addicted corpse since cigarettes became a four-letter word.

Don't talk to me about Sherlock Holmes. There is a ComicCon weekend in my hometown right now full of Sherlock Holmeses. All in deerstalkers, with pipes and flapping cloaks, and fake moustaches (for reasons I don't understand). In a time of covid-19 it is elementary (!) that social distancing prevails, but not with these freaks who mooch about in gangs of 20 or so 'solving' clues provided by the CC crew and bumping into us locals and asking us for help with their project. True, the first S H story was written in my home town when Doyle was a GP here, but it is still damned annoying.

Isn't smoking a pipe distracting Holmes from thinking? He's smoking and is in deep thought, which would be multitasking. I get that Arthur wrote it that way because it makes Holmes seem cool. But in context with your explanation of multitasking it's counterproductive, right?

So let me get this straight. She instructs the audience to close their eyes and CLEAR their thoughts and just focus on their breathing. Then 20 minutes later she ask if that was that hard. She goes on to say we are not used to being alone with our thoughts. So didn't she just say CLEAR your thoughts? Does she not she the contradiction here? How can you be alone with your thoughts if you clear your thoughts?
