  • Masking in InDesign is just as important as in Photoshop and Illustrator, so in this video I’m going to walk you through all the different ways you can show and hide parts of your images. I will demonstrate the use of custom frames, feathering and clipping paths and show you many creative techniques that can improve your InDesign layouts.

I've been working in ID for the last 8 years (mostly with text) and this video has shown me so many new options I wasn't aware about. I've always been dependent on PS to do most of the effects mentioned. It's a revelation to see it's also possible directly in ID. Thank you for this wonderful guide. I'll also check the PS masking one.

Nice video. I just want to mention that in 3:53 you can check the distance between frames in "Layout - Margins and columns - gutter" or dynamically: After making the grid, you select all frames with Selection tool and press and hold on one of the corners of the bounding box, then simultaneously hold down the SPACEBAR and drag. You can dynamically adjust the spacing between the frames. Add SHIFT to control the ratio of frames sizes.

I have minor advice: 18:50 the alpha channel has to be choosen while importing the image. If you use the "clipping path" Indesign creates a new path which will be different to the original alpha channel (and by far not as smooth). :)
