Used to see this alot on TV. It was, and still is, one of my favorites. I didn't know about the novel until I heard James Salter interviewed on NPR. Salter flew Sabres during the Korean War. Other than the names of the characters the film has virtually no resemblence to the novel. Be advised it is a very dark novel, a very great novel. Don't start reading it with the rah, rah "Wild Blue Yonder" frame of mind you get from the film. I had to set it aside after the first chapter and come back to it later to appreciate, and accept, its realistic depiction of the Korean air war.
Movie is forgotten like the Korean and the Vietnam War. Everybody becomes a patriot during war and when it's over everybody forgets the murder and carnage as if nothing happened. People forget the heroes who fight and die after Wars are over. That's why i hate War and am anti War coz its so wrong and evil.
