Breast Bone Bursting Brilliance. Your song makes my heart ache with familiarity for family. On my knees in thanks.

First time I heard this years ago, on a bus I had missed my grandfather’s funeral. I could not face watching it, I was in tears when I heard this back then and now many years later.

I first heard it when he played at the Cambridge folk festival and it made me cry! And I'm a tough working class northern lad from the wrong side of Leeds

If there's a better lyric, I haven't heard it. Perfect song.

Is that Kate Rusby singing with him in the choruses?

I think so, she has such a distinctive voice, their voices together are beautiful! 😀

I'm guessing this is one of Simpson's self-penned efforts. There's always this strange, not-quite-assimilated mixture on his albums of trad British, trad American, and modern songs, especially his own. I'm not so fond of the last category, especially as they all seem to have the same tune, similar worthy themes, and too many choruses.

It's a tribute to his own father, and while it may not be in your taste... I'd question what the "Theme" of it is, especially as it's a common one to Simpson's Roster and is played differently in different recordings. The only song that immediately jumps to mind as being immediately comparable is Trouble Bought Me Here, which is played differently and doesn't have a chorus as such.
