Codename Englandspiel: the England Game - Britain's Worst Intelligence Disaster of WW2

  • Even today, the Englandspiel is still considered one of the great mysteries of World War Two in the Netherlands. Between March 1942 and May 1943, dozens of agents, dropped by the British, fell in German hands right after landing on Dutch territory. They were deployed in a plan (Spiel) set up by the Germans giving the impression they were still operating in freedom while the British continued sending secret agents and material to the Netherlands. What was going on? Were the British secret services victims of a German deception or were the Germans being deceived themselves? What were the causes of the British incompetence? How could it take so long before the British found out what was really happening?
Top Secret - covert operations, double agents, commando raids, botched missions, daring escapes, black ops, intelligence failures & military blunders of World War 2.

ik ben altijd van mening geweest dat het "Englandspiel" een gevolg van Britse arrogantie is geweest

Almost the entire core of large parts of Dutch Resistance fell victim afterwards as a result of this and it is amazing how the survivors manage to keep on going afterwards.
The result was that they kept their mouths shut even to their own family after the war.
Especially those in the south and who participated as volunteer fighter for over 130 days 4 to 6 months on the Western Front Line.
    Some 4000 did.
And capture meant torture and execution as the German didn't recognize former citizens of the 3rd Reich as regular soldiers.
So we today don't even know who was actually in the Resistance or in the Dutch Interior Forces, Commando Brabant and Commando Limburg.
It is not even mentioned in the Dutch history books.

This documentry is a very good documentry about the consequence, but not the root cause.
    And don't get fooled.
    The Dutch Resistance knew.
But not the full sinister reason.
And therefor they never blamed the Brits.
Don't you find it strange there was never an official Dutch veteransday until their Supreme Commander died?
They had their own one at Wageningen.
When he died, suddenly WW2 veterans were not allowed to participate any more.
    Soon the funds were retracted.
And now there is an official Vets day at.....D-Hague.
You see, the Resistance had to fight on 3 fronts at the same time.
Against the Germans, the Dutch 5 colomn and let's say a third party who only served themselves under false pretences.
One of them was the former PM, who deserted via Portugal to occupied Holland and collaberated with the Germans.
His only punishment was a 1 year house arrest so he would kept quite.
So follow the huge amount of frozen Dutch money outside the German occupied terretories and you be amazed.
In dec.'44 a Dutch movie was released with an intro of Elenor Roosevelt.
They never expected those people to survive.
And those who servived never got one cent back.
They knew they had to decimate the Resistance to keep it as small as possible and under absolute control, to secure their return and cover-up their crime.
    And I should know.
My family was one of those who servived.
    Well most of them.
And never got one cent back.
And my Granddad who belonged to a Resistance Group who fought against FJR.6 and MEK40 for 136 day on the Western front line didn't even receive the Dutch Resistance Cross.

I read somewhere that of the people who took a side in the Netherlands (obviously most ppl were passive) 20 percent were active in the Resistance and 80 percent were active in collaboration.

@@irishboer7124 There is no accurate account and passive is relative.
After this affair the Resistance had to recuperate and operate in even segerated cells.
'Ons kent ons' Everybody knew who was pro or con, but nobody knew who did what.
And at the end even those who who collaberated knew it was comming to an end.
The sudden liberation of Antwerp on Sept.4 1944 caused 'Mad Tuesday' where Germans and commentators alike fled over the rivers up to the north or even into Germany in blind panic.
It took the Germans some days to fully regain control after they were able to halt the remnants of the stampeding German Army at the Albert-Canal in Belgium.
So the majority of the Dutch population in the south saw with their own eyes what happend while most in the north never did.
There is no decent account of Dutch 'Vollunteers' on the Western Front line from September 1944 to mid January 1945.
But for mid January to March 1945 the ratio for Allied to Dutch Vollunteers ran up to 50% for the sector Tholen Island , St.Philipsland Peninsula up to Moerdijk.
Armed with only one clip they faced recces & raids of Marine Einsatz Kommando 40 (MEK40) , the German equivalent of the British Royal Marines Commandos.
It was nothing more then a poor defense line and between them and the Port of Antwerp just over 50 Kilometer away, no Allied troops to mention.
And you'll find nothing about that in history books.
Note that all Dutch soldiers were recalled into forced labor in Germany.
      Just like all able men.
      Especially the young.
      This gives a better assessment.

Badly researched. And "Engelanderkamp" does not mean field of angels but "Camp of the English".
