    I couldn't believe how much water we lost this year, so I will try that tip with the hoses this year. I don't remember it being that low in past years ( 4 year owner). Hate the leaks! Bringing out the vaseline & giving it a try...thanks for all the great information. Today was opening day in Michigan.

    Thanks! Found out I had a missing ring. Found another one on an unused part and adjusted the fit. Still leaked. Found your video, used Vaseline and no more leak today. I am also thankful to those who commented. I will order new rings and the proper sealant for future use.

    O-Ring Lube. Costs more but a much better product and lasts longer. Definitely have the right idea. PROTECT YOUR STUFF & IT LASTS MUCH LONGER! Great Video!

    Enjoyed the video. Misery loves company so I feel better abt. leaks & problems with my pool. Two things; You asked abt. water displacement solutions. The tarp may be the problem. My pool cover is porous & I use a large float to keep it from sinking. 2) Good advise to lubricate o-rings & fittings but I don't use petroleum jelly. Petroleum products will break down rubber. (Probably the cause of many "Oh s___t" moments & many pregnancies.). I use silicone lube. Hope you don't have any o-ring problems.

      Lol You're comment caused me to laugh and I love comments that do that :-) I hear you on the petroleum jelly o ring thought. I actually said something about that to him and he told me he's been using it for 10 years on his pool and zero problems. So we went with PJ. I was going to try dielectric grease but went this route instead. Since I did I'm going to stick with it and see how long it takes to mess up my o rings. When it does, you'll see a video and you'll get a mention lol Thanks for the post/info

    I agree with the Bill Fort comment below about using Vaseline on the neoprene seals (it can damage them). You can get a special silicone white grease made specifically for these seals at a pool supply store. A small tube has lasted me for many years.
    Also, you might want to shut off your pool motor during video recording to greatly improve the sound quality. 🎬

    You should use silicone grease instead of Vaseline. Vaseline has petroleum in it that eats the rubber.

    This reconnecting the hoses to the pool itself is fine if you live in a nice warm weather but if you live in Pennsylvania like us you have to drain that below your hose and put a plug in it otherwise we get down to zero sometimes for days upon days. So this is void if you live in cold.

    Instead of connecting your hose to the other valve in the winter, do yourself a favor and buy ball valve shut off connectors. Not only
    Will this solve your winterizing problem and stop the loss of water, these valves come in very handy during swim season should you need to seal off the water to the pool
    for things like filter repairs or maintenance.

    Trying using rubber plugs for your intake and out take pool lines when you close pool. You live in a warm climate than you can do that if you live in cold climate you have to drain pool water below skimmer, so as not to freeze and crack skimmer

  • @jrros9828
    @jrros9828 Před 2 lety

    you could use a shutoff valve in-between your hose when you have a solar tubing you have it split into 2 directions sense you don't have solar you just get a shutoff valve witch works, another way I had same problem as you did plain and simple put a plug where the water is sent back to the pool fix your leek take out plug turn on you don't need to empty pool fill etc but if you just want to shut off then the shutoff valve is great, At the end of summer I have my tubing cut in the middle and have the connecters that either unscrew or tighten, When summer comes I connect them in 2 minutes plus I also have the same from water intake to filter, this way I unscrew take the pump in the house for the winter done summers is back take bump to pool connect done. These are I guess PVC or hard plastic that join the 2 tubing as you would have cut glue then connect the 2 parts your done. It takes me no more than 5 minutes to connect my pool takes longer to find out were I put the tubing in the shed. good luck

  • @SeanBZA
    @SeanBZA Před 6 lety +1

    If you are assembling the hoses from parts, do first clean the PVC surfaces that are going to mate with the correct PVC cleaner, and also make sure all the cuts are burr free, and free of all swarf from cutting, along with being perfectly square. Then do not be shy with the PVC weld, make a generous coating on the part going inside, and a thinner coat on the outer part. Push in firmly and fast, so they seat fully with a good amount of the PVC weld in the joint, and quickly wipe off the outside of any excess along with the inside if possible, and allow to cure the recommended time for the particular adhesive and your local temperature.
    If a fitting that has been done with PVC weld does leak, a quick cure is to apply PVC weld to the outside( first wipe with the cleaner) and then wrap insulation tape over the join, a good number of turns, and pulled tight, so as to make a further PVC seal on the join. Hold with a cable tie till cured so the tape does not peel

  • @johnqpublic6228

    Looping the water supply can be an issue for winterizing as the plastic pipe can split when temperatures go below 30 degrees.

    so i have a different issue. My pool return line is leaking. i need to disconnect the hose but when i do all the water will drain...i was thinking of putting a garbage bag on the inside thinking the water pressure will seal the outlet.... think it should work.
    my next issue is the guy who did the hoses used hose clamps (worm drive)... also the hose is too wide ( when I cut the end to get a fresh end to work with)... I swear he used heat to soften and allow for a tight seal ( it is a very thick hose seems like ...I don't know if that's a "hack" but the return outlet connector s smooth and almost looks like it should use compression fitting.
    my pool is older and everything just doesn't look as clean as your setup. I'll probably need to visit the pool supply anyways...

    Also if you're in a warm area like Florida Georgia Alabama Texas Arizona Louisiana Mississippi South Carolina North Carolina Southern Virginia California Kentucky Tennessee or any other pretty warm States I did not mention you don't have to worry about disconnecting your hoses for the winter because you only get down to like 30 degrees for a few days.

  • @davidhorizon8401

    I am guessing you don't need to worry about ice? If the water in the hose freezes, won't it crack and maybe your inlet fitting?

    • @Legend5k32
      @Legend5k32 Před 5 lety

      I didn't really watch the video cause he talked a lot. Wasn't really what I was looking for.
      But to answer your question. If you drain all the water out to where it's below the skimmer and leave the rest of the water in the pool. It shouldn't freeze them because there would be no water in the hoses. We did that, this last winter and no cracking.

    • @DoDgeSwaG
      @DoDgeSwaG Před 2 lety +1

      Yea lazy pool owners don’t do this even though you’re supposed to then they end up having to replace skimmers, return inlet gaskets, etc, because the ice expands and cracks these parts. It’s easier to just lower 6” below the return to account for ice expansion. It’s only about 2,000 gallons of water needed to top off to the skimmer opening season, not that big of a deal.

    Found it helpful even though my problem was that my outlets were not properly fastened. I will keep the Vaseline trick in mind if I encounter the same problems you had!

      This is what the video is addressing. Disconnect the fitting, inspect your o-ring to ensure it's not smashed or cut, clean the connecting surfaces on both sides, smear silicone grease all over the o-ring and contact surfaces and carefully reinstall. You shouldn't have to overtighten.

    Dont use Vaseline! They sell specific product for gaskets that is clear like Vaseline which doesn't degrade the rubber. Teflon or silicone lube . Vaseline will breakdown the rubber gasket and it will stretch next time you take it off. However if you gaskets are that are silicone dont use anything maybe some water to help it tighten. Silicone lube will eat at silicone gaskets.
