    Footwork was a big difference. Matt's footwork and shot preparation is very consistent. Some of Winston's unforced errors came because he was not quite in the right position. Thanks for sharing!

      yeah, the Matt is hard-worker on all the shots while Winston is quite lazy on some of them.
      I had the same problem, it was solved by moving to blade 98 18x20(as it punishes me for bad footwork) and focusing more on physical preparation

    REally good one handed back hand by Matt. I like using a one hander too , but it is so hard to control and master. Thinking of going two hands reluctantly. One handed is so classy. Winston's got a good forehand. He needs to finish the easy points at the net. Hopefully he has gotten better at that in the past year.

  • @SeireaTennis

    A super sweet watch. It was personally really intriguing to watch Matt and his technique on both strokes on the BH wing. It's liberating and inspiring to see the same main things which I get the most observations about - the stiffness of the body, the very minimalized racquet drop on the drive stroke, the very in-front contact point on the slice. He makes it all work extremely well, and at a 5.0 level to boot. Definitely loved this. Thanks for playing and putting it together!
    (Sure, watching Winston is cool too I guess :] )

      For me, learning to stay in points is being patient is a really good take-away. It is funny watching, where in some of the points I was saying in my head "I would have gone for that one", but then I know it wasn't really an offensive position, but the good aggressive neutral ball you both often hit is the better shot. Definitely learning as I go. Appreciate the content.

  • @brianburns77
    @brianburns77 Před 2 lety +4

    Winston I'm sure you noticed this already but I think you would have more chances when he gives you that shorter, neutral ball to create more angle off of your forehand. Get him moving outside the doubles lines and make him work more instead of going safe/neutral. He's rock solid from the baseline when he has time so creating angle and stepping up will put more pressure on him to come up with a better shot :)

  • @farid1406
    @farid1406 Před 2 lety +3

    As a one-hander myself, I can tell you the secret to beating us is to isolate to the backhand with your backhand. This is hard because most of us are pros at dancing around the backhand to hit inside out (like Matt here) so you have to really work at nailing the backhand corner. Reason you do it with your backhand is because you don't give up court positioning and that helps you with the next tip: punish by going down the line with your backhand when we hit inside out. You do this because it takes away time you would spend hitting a forehand, and that makes it much harder to cover that shot, making the next shot a controlling one for you. Most people struggle with doing either of these, especially against 5.0+ one-handers but if you do those two things well you'll trouble any one-hander regardless of win or lose. Djokovic v Federer is a great model.

      Exactly. Let me get to work.

    • @marcgrondin65
      @marcgrondin65 Před 2 lety

      one way to expose the backhand is to hit deep to the forehand, then avoid hitting only 3 feet from the center-line, which these types of players will willingly run around.

    • @farid1406
      @farid1406 Před 2 lety

      @@marcgrondin65 Yes! This is easier if you isolate their backhand first with your backhand because:
      1) You push them further off court making the forehand harder to cover
      2) You will likely get a short or weak ball that you can drill up the line to the forehand and increase the percentage on that shot, rather than hit it off of a neutral rally ball which is much harder

    • @hellobenny
      @hellobenny Před 2 lety +1

      I think 90% of Matts game is his excellent forehand (and good footwork). His 1 handed topspin backhand technique is actually not correct in my opinion, hits with mostly sidespin instead of topspin. But he hides it well by running around it and also slicing.

    nice video, great hitting. question at 4:20, I run into this a lot and wondered if anyone had any input on shot selection. I find myself here a lot, off balance backhand either from my opponents attacking approach shot or a volley (as we just saw). I feel since my backhand isn't strong already, should I just be trying to get a flick lob towards there backhand side as defense. Each time I try and go for the pass, I either miss or since I'm off balance it's so weak they do a put away volley. Any thoughts?

  • @Dasato123
    @Dasato123 Před 2 lety +1

    Winston next time you play this guy the only thing that should be on your mind is “Hit to his backhand”. There were only a few points that he had to hit more than 4 backhands in a row. You won most of those. Don’t worry about having a too “obvious “ a strategy. He runs around his backhand to protect a weakness. Don’t let him get away with that. Even if he hits a good slice backhand it just keeps him in the point it’s not really hurting you outright. You had one serve and volley point to his backhand. Do more of that on occasion to force him to not just slice backhand serve returns. Another thing you could do occasionally during your serve and rallies is hit a shot to his backhand and take a quickly step or two forward telegraphing a net approach. You can stop and stay at the baseline after this “Fake”. This move will draw further errors from his backhand.
    This guy has rather extreme grips on both sides. Players like this generally don’t do well on low short balls, especially wide ones. Give him what he doesn’t like not what he does like. It means altering your hitting patterns but he’s shown that he’s better than you at executing the run of the mill baseline topspin rally.
    Work on that overhead. The tentativeness in your body language during overheads is so marked. On the positive side you showed some pretty good mobility in this set.
