Excellent work Peter. I like a radio that is not covered in surface-mount components. There is something to look at and admire in a radio like that. These days it is like grains of rice scattered over the board! A big processor, a few chips, display drivers, well, you know what I mean. Nice work, repairing the radio. Clever, using a bulb as a fuse to protect the front end. As always, I find your videos very entertaining and educational. 👍‍ 😎 I like your work, very thorough and precise, a joy to watch a professional at work :-))

Excellent video showing the trouble, this time was very easy, the same work I make on 757GXII but less tilt up the PCB, but changing the minilamp ( 8 volt - 0,1 Amp ) directly from the top of PCB.
Very often I found this trouble in Yaesu radio due to excessive RF or static voltages on antenna System.

    Thank you Peter..
I have a very similar FT-757 II and wondered how well the bulb protected the Rx circuitry..
Knew it would open on a major spike, but was unaware of it progressively increasing resistance / protection as it heats up above normal current / signal levels.. Cool! Good job Yaesu! And thank you for the explanation..
Forgive me for a couple comments..
    - although it might not be considered good practice, if you had clipped the leads off the old bulb, and soldered the new bulb to the old leads, you might have avoided heating the PC board & having to flip it.. just a thought..
    - looking closely at the underside of the PC board, about 21:51, it seems there might be at least two other cracked solder joints on through holes & one end of a surface mount that might have benefitted from a reheat while you were there..
    Thanks again.. Dennis

these vintage radios are 100 times better made than today's radios. they were made when designers thought about the users. Transmit into the radio with 100 watts? Lightning strikes the antenna? no problem, the user has to change a bulb worth 80 cents. Back on the air in one hour, maximum.
The new generation of transceivers? they go faulty just by the position of the Sun and the planets, or if a bigger bird sits on the antenna. Of course, they can be fixed by changing a bunch of SMD semiconductors and passives, or by swapping out the whole board. The cost? well... let's not talk about the cost.

While the covers were off, I also took the opportunity to perform one of Peter's modifications, using a PTC thermistor to temperature stabilise the master oscillator czcams.com/video/KxVJfxiw4ZQ/video.html Such stability is probably overkill for HF SSB, but the temperature drift became problematic when using FT8.
