  • Ken "Professor" Philmore came close to making pan history when he almost beat Len " Boogsie" Sharpe in Panorama 1989 with his arrangement of Boogsie's composition "Fire Down Below".
This performance was from the semi finals.
Both Boogsie's and Professor's arrangements are outstanding panorama classics, and they tied for second place on final night.
Renegades , playing Baron's "Somebody" was the eventual winner.

Pans sounded so clean and the articulations of phrasing were precisely staccato in those times

i would like to hear the professor and boogsie talk about that panorama, it's like a sparrow kitch thing one pushing the other to higher levels...then passing him and pushing again...beautiful

Looked at and listened to this arrangement several times and made the comparison with Phase II. Popular names don't win competition, good arrangements do. Unfortunately this time the name did. This was an excellent arrangement by the Professor and deserved the win. May be he still need to learn how to brown-nose the powers that be.

every body knew he was to get first place, but because it was not a port of spain band they give him second neverthe less this in my view was the best composition that year, and my brother who played with this band died last year of renal cell carcinoma, hewas only 45yrs I play this in remembrance of him, since it brings back so much memories.

Pro actually came 1st by 10 pts in the semifinals but his demise was playing to a slower count on final night which in turn netted him a second place tie with boogsie whom he now enjoys a good friendship with. Those days pro was hungry to prove his talents

You know they always have to cheat this band, if they don't they don't feel good at all..... So let them keep cheating them, one day they wont be able to. i just hope that the professor lives to see, and hear it, to know all his hard work didn't go to waist. God bless Fronclair. Beautiful arrangement.

My Results (but it was hard!): 1. Phase II 2. Renegades/Fonclaire (tie..but there's no recording of Gades FINAL performance...maybe that was the deciding factor for their win!) 4. Desperadoes (good arrangement as well)

I personally think that professor's arrangement was better. We have to come up with a better format for judging this timeless tradition.

Good arrangement, but Phase II all day. Nothing really distinctive in this arrangement here. Boogsie had some pretty innovative parts in his arrangement that plays well up to this day.

Good arrangement put not better than Phase II, come keep it real and stop fighting down Boogsie because of his man's attitude, that's the signature and unique part of the man.

judging pan not easy at all....pick another kind of music and its easy...pan is very very tough....ask any musical professor or educator
