    Description: Secrets of Genre
Knowing how the genre works under the surface puts you ahead of everyone else working in the same genre as you.
New authors think about their story. Good authors think about the tropes of their sub-genre (and what sells).
The best authors understand that the tropes are just the sprinkles on the top, and that the real mechanism for a compelling bestseller is the structure underlying the tropes.
I’m going to explain all the ingredients, so you can see how the entire story system works. For each genre I will tell you the two most important techniques and the underlying themes that your readers jones for.
Note: addictive stories sell more books. Every. Single. Book.

God bless you, John Truby. I was critical of you in the past. Wish I'd kept my mouth shut and listened. ❤

Wish his commentary could have been kept in even if the film clips were cut out. We lost some of his meatiest conclusions without it. Not yet possible?

You probably know more than me about copyright, but wouldn't the usage os a clip for educational purposes fall under fair use?
Too late to do anything about this, though, I guess, even if I was right.

Any guesses where John might place a survival story along the lines of Hatchet?

I am have not read the story, but I have read the synopsis. The main genre will probably be Action. Taking action and never giving up is the main theme of the story from what I have quickly read through. Depending on what the character encounters throughout the story, you can add other genres into the story such as Horror and/or Myth. If the character is young which may have been the possible case, Myth genre is all about tracking the character's growth (i.e., life journey from 1 stage in life into the next stage of their life). Hope it helps.

It's so dumb that portions were removed for copyright. Copyright doesn't apply to educational pieces, like this obviously is.

@53:47 "the greatest British crime film ever made" -- The Rise of the Krays
and yet 22% of RT, 4.9 on IMDB and 67% of Google users liked it.
I think Truby must have his Kray films mixed up or he hasn't watched this one.
