Fun fact(s): 1. Odysseus didn’t know his mother was dead until now, she died waiting for him to come home. 2. Odysseus’ mom was played by Jorge’s (the creator and voice of Odysseus) real mom. Take the facts as you will. 🥲

That was a sad fact 😢

@@godofthebirds3915 Admittedly, the second fact is way more “fun” than the first; but it does add more context to what is going on.

Third fact: the people that are dead are saying the last thing that had been on their minds. Polices died wanting to tell Odysseus to “greet the world with open arms” and his mom died thinking of him as she awaited his return home. (At least, that’s what Jorge said when explaining the snippets 😅)

The saddest part of that song is that it sounds like his mom isn’t aware she’s dead or that he’s right there. She’s still waiting for him. She’ll keep waiting for him. GOD IT HURTS.

I don't think anyone in the Greek Underworld knows they're dead unless I'm confusing Greek with a different mythology

@@danteglory95 They have to drink sacrificial blood to become aware. An exception to this is Tiresias, who due to his seers sight, is able to be somewhat aware even without it.

Also, in this version (EPIC), Jorge said that the spirits are singing/in the state of what they were thinking right before they died. So, Polites died still thinking that kindness is till teh better option.

    • @Goomsies

@@DionaerysIn the original myth, Odysseus did still conjure Tiresias with sacrificial blood. The fact that Tiresias still has his powers at all is thanks to Persephone.
Tiresias actually has a lot of myths that hinge upon him. The main one is when he got transformed into a woman by Hera for stomping on a pair of coupling snakes. He lived as a woman for years, became a priestess, and even had a son before he was transformed back into a man. Then he had to settle an argument between Zeus and Hera where he sided with Zeus. Hera blinded him for not siding with her, then Zeus gave him the power of prophesy and a lifespan 7 times longer than normal as an apology. He was a very popular prophet after that, and was never wrong about anything. He was so good that Persephone let him keep his powers in death, which most prohets do not get to do.

I'm still not over Odysseus saying Polites' name with the same cadence he used in Full Speed Ahead, just with his voice sounding a lot weaker and more broken this time around. Especially when you consider the fact that he tends to sing the higher notes when he's extremely emotional.
An analysis I saw on tumblr that I really liked said something along the lines of The Underworld representing Odysseus' mind. First we see the strong and reliable captain he normally is, but then they actually enter the Underworld. It's all chaotic when they get there because he starts to spiral mentally when he thinks of everyone he lost and the horrors he had to go through. But then, just like he did during Open Arms, Polites shows up and is able to calm him down. Odysseus takes a moment to grieve for his friend once more, and then hearing his mother's voice adds to his peace for a short time, as he slowly comes to accept her death.
At least- until he realizes that he missed actually saying goodbye to her in life. And that realization breaks him, his guilt and other emotions breaking free, thus the chaos of the ending mimicking the beginning.

The Underworld broke me. It's so beautiful. 🥺❤ The amount of emotion Jay portrays in his vocals is heart-wrenching. I'm in love with Odysseus' soft notes when he sings to Polites and his mom and the immediate shift to grief and despair when he sings his last 'All I hear are screams', realising he has lost them forever.
Thank you for this reaction. :)

1:47 That boy is Astyanax. The infant. If you listen closely, the bells are the same melody as the music box melody in "The Horse and the Infant" from Troy Saga. Jay really hit us with ALL of the emotional trauma from the past sagas packed into three songs in Underworld Saga. 🤣

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in the comments yet but unless it's a god singing, any backing vocals have to be done by people present in the scene.
Also every character has a signature instrument that plays that signifies their involvement. Piano for Athena for example.
Odysseus' changes from acoustic guitar to electric guitar depending on whether he's being more analytical/ruthless or emotional/merciful.
Also if you listen closely you can sometimes pick up things from hearing a signature instrument. In "Wouldn't you like" for example you can hear a little bit of a different God's instrument which suggests they're involved with him being there.

If I recall correctly, none of the souls actually knew that Odysseus and his ship were there. They're just endlessly repeating their final thoughts over and over. Meaning that even in the end, Polites was thinking about kindness and his mother waiting for her son to come home. Still, I like this way, where he gets some type of closure or at least acknowledgment by those he loves.

This is the first time I'm hearing Underworld Saga since the release, because it was so emotionally powerful that I was shaking after and I needed a few days to recover. 😅 I had predicted Polites, so I was slightly prepared for that. Euryclea came out of nowhere, I was not ready for that.
