I've always found funny the fact that Stan is a CIA agent and Francine is some kind of crazy ex-inmate street fighter deus ex machina, but Hayley is a hippie and Steve is a nerd.

More functional than Peter and Lois’ marriage, it seems. It seems that both Peter and Lois just take advantage of each other; financially and emotionally, while Stan and Francine still care for each other, especially since Francine wishes to support her husband, even if the two are absolute sociopaths.
Francine is the perfect amount of unhinged, just enough where it can be deeply unsettling for a bit, but doesn't overtake the show or make her unlikable.
agree they hit the perfect balance with francine, american dad in general has done a much better job avoiding flanderisation of its characters ( not completely but still) than family guy has, even Roger who's probably the easiest to ruin that way I think they still balance his insanity well
Francine is such a talented human. Shes super powerful, resourceful, quick, and witty. Also to the other comments saying shes stupid: Shes clearly not dumb, shes clueless at times. If you watched more episodes you would know she is far from that. I love watching scenes that has her in it. Shes so interesting.

What I love about this show is that it's a refreshing change from making the dad a complete douchebag who is alcoholic or mediocre and make the mom the voice of reason and the one that cleans afterwards. Like Stan has the body of a DILF and he is a highly trained agent that makes pretty decent money and is very disciplined and his wife is a walking pile of love that deep down has the most twisted backstory , violent toughts and she is capable of the most disturbing kinds of torture ,completely insane person. Those two really are a fun pair, a hella lot better than Peter and Lois.
It's like that chintzy Boomer meme. "Last night I told my wife her soup tasted terrible. Today, it tastes much better." And the accompanying image is a guy eating a soup with the hugest blackeye.
Stan and Francine were a match made in... well, I'm not sure if it was heaven, but they go perfectly well together. It's almost amazing how they raised two children that won't fight, and can't fight respectively

Something that I noticed that's a bit funny is that while burying the santa body each displays different levels of expertise with Francine mindlessly taking exactly from the pile of dirt she has, Stan taking from the bottom of his pile, and both Steve and Hayley taking directly from the ground. Shows who's buried bodies the most.
There are multiple episodes that focus on and show how absolutely unhealthy their relationship is. The creators don't hide it and have the Smith's carry it with an, almost, sort of pride.
I hope the creator one day decides on an episode or an arc about Francine finally leaving Stan for good and he goes to a mental asylum. As the final season of American Dad. (And Klaus has his human body back.)

The moment when she revealed she was sturing an empty bowl and starts singing in the dark cracked me up. Francine is the funniest of the McFarland moms. Lois is way to predictable but Francine can still suprise me.
