    I have the same dog breed, around 10 months old and I’m trying to teach him through quails hunting trips. Any suggestions to make him point (through other trainings possibly)? He usually runs directly into the bird when he gets its sense.

      I would try to use planted birds, so you can control the situation, along with a check cord. If you watch the dog closely, and you know which way the wind is blowing, along with where the bird is, you can pull on the check cord when you know the dog has scented the bird. When he stops pulling on the cord and stands, you can release your pressure on the cord....if he starts to creep in on the bird, give the cord a firm quick tug and tell him "Whoa." (I'm assuming your dog knows the command whoa, if not start by teaching him the whoa command). There are a lot of helpful vids on youtube already regarding teaching a dog whoa. It's the "stay" command for my dogs. Hope this helps.

      THE MOUNTAINLIFE, Thank you a lot, that was very helpful. I will definitely try it. My dog learned the command as “stay”, yet I will check some other “whoa” videos to make sure he learned it properly.

    What brand is that bird launcher?

  • @diamonddog257

    I think that dog was born trained :
    - you should start him far cross-wind or up-wind from your bird-a-pult and see how he does.

  • @flugschulerfluglehrer7139

    Why don’t you wait until the dog moves his legs before you launch the bird.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  Před 4 lety

      Because I want him to stand still until I flush the bird. I don't want a pointing dog to move once he has established point. He doesn't get to decide when the bird flies, I do.....hence the whole reason of owning a pointing dog over a flushing dog.

    • @flugschulerfluglehrer7139
      @flugschulerfluglehrer7139 Před 4 lety +2

      THE MOUNTAINLIFE I do understand that. I train my dog this way: Once he establishes point I wait until he makes the slightest move but then I restrain him from chasing the bird so he learns that he has to stand still if he does not want to loose the bird.
      When I am hunting I do not want the dog to run after a flushed bird. I could never shoot a pheasant if my dog were to run after the bird. He has to stand still even after the bird was flushed. Only if I tell him to run after the bird, he is allowed to leave his post and bring the bird I shot. I am no dog trainer, just a passionate dog owner, and my current dog is my first GSHP. So I do not want to say that the way, I do it, is correct. I just try to explain my reasoning and it is fair well possible that I’m completely wrong. What do you think?

      @@flugschulerfluglehrer7139 Thanks for the clarification, knowing the rest of this definitely helps. And by the way, "I am no dog trainer" either :) I think your methods and reasonings are good. Essentially it comes down to what YOU want YOUR dog to do. I admire your training to have your dog steady to wing and shot, mine is not. Simply because I know that with the other people I hunt with, who's dogs are not trained steady to wing and shot, my dog would never get a retrieve if I trained him this way. Is being steady to wing and shot better? Probably, because it is a much safer situation for the dog. Ultimately train the way you like, and enjoy the dogs work! Thanks for the input. :)

      My dog is trained to retrieve after he receives a command AND a gentle touch on his head. The physical input is a very strong and clear marker fit the dog. We have lots of regulations and rules for hunting dogs here in Europe. If you want full points in your certifications for the dog retrieving works as follows: The dog as to sit close to your left leg, you throw the dummy, you send the dog out, the dog has to bring the dummy, sit in front of you and hold the dummy in his snout until you tell him to put it in your hand. Then the dog has to go to your left side and finish the exercise as started sitting next to your leg. I think to a US American this might sound funny, but there is reasons why this is a good way of retrieving. For instance we use German Shorthair and German Wirehair for retrieving foxes. Unfortunately they are not always 100 % dead, when the dogs bring them, so it is much safer for dog and hunter, if the dog releases the prey only if told so.
      The ritualistic behavior makes it much easier for the dog to do „the right thing“ and dogs love to do the right thing.
      Pointing and retrieving are two completely different rituals. Once I release my dog from steady, he knows exactly what follows. And dogs love that, so there is no way that he would not retrieve a dead bird.

      @@flugschulerfluglehrer7139 That doesn't sound silly at all. In fact, in hunt tests such as the NAVHDA Utility Test here in the United States this same standard is expected. It is awesome to watch a dog work that has been trained to that level. It is truly a polished and finished dog. For me, I hunt rather than participate in hunt testing, so I have not trained to that level. However, I really admire people and dogs who can reach such levels of training! Sounds like you have some great dogs.
