You can get up to 4 displays working with the Surface Laptop 5. You need to use Thunderbolt compatible displays, which allow you to daisy chain the connection between them. Dell, HP and LG sell several models that do this.
I'm disappointed that the surface dock 4 does not use the surface connector freeing up built in ports to the surface devices while providing power. Being a proprietary connection, it looks like it's limited to usb specs and didn't update to thunderbolt or pci-e specs. The dock is no different than any other thunderbolt dock with more limitations than third party solutions.

Two monitors connect to the dock via DisplayPort to usbc cables. This gives me 3 screens including the surface. I tried to connect a 3rd external monitor via usbc to hdmi cable which I connected to the usbc port on the surface pro. Unfortunately the 4th screen does not work (or at least I am only able to have any combination of 3 screens working however the 4th screen is greyed out in the display settings. Any ideas why this might be? Thanks in advance.
When you had 3 monitors plus the laptop, what was the resolution on all the monitors? I'm trying to use 2 24" and a 32". The highest resolution I can get is all three at 1920 x 1080, which is fine for the smaller ones, but not sufficient for my larger display, which I'd like to run at 2560 x 1440. My current dock won't support this much total resolution and I'm wondering if the surface dock 2 could.
I had the same question. The cord you are plugging into the surface isn't what you have linked. There is something larger around the end that you are plugging into the surface@@DPCTechnology
Using loud background music while talking will significant decrease attention span !! There is zero added value in it and results in low retention rate

It all depends on which Surface you have! T-bolt 4 started with the 8

I think it may have to do with resolution and the 3rd monitor. Obviously pushing the edge and your milage may vary..

Those were 1080, the big monitor was 1440.
Could you use a USB-C dock such as Hypertec plus the Surface Dock 2 for 4 external monitors?
Not sure, but it think its the limit of the surface's gpu..

do you know if this setup will work with surface book 2. if i call microsoft sales they say it will no.
Im not sure about the Surface Book 2. I suspect it would but oif MS said no, I would probably not try.
It's my understanding that the SB2 can support 2x4k monitors, but only at 30hz. SB3 fixed that limitation.
