What people donât wear in Disney anymore

- I wish they would bring these back đ„ș as far as Iâve see these were only sold in the 1950s in Disneyland. But they were so practical for the SoCal sunshine that many people purchased them to keep the âïž off their faces.
I wanted to make this post highlighting moms because I know (as a mom of 3) how invisible moms can feel sometimes. If thatâs you today, know that what you do is SO important, and that you matter. Thank you for all the hundreds of tasks you do everyday to love and care for your kids đ

Pro tip if you want to wear a vintage-style dress but donât want to kill your feet: Keds! The Keds Champion sneaker is largely unchanged in style since it launched in 1916 (NOT a typo.) Plenty of women wore shoes like Keds with their day dresses when they were going to be on their feet for long periods.
Thatâs a great tip! I like ballet flats myself ⊠still a little fancy but way better than heels on my feet
@@disneycicerone for sure, as long as you get the right flats!
Love me some keds

I canât imagine wearing a tight dress and heels all day at Disney. Thank goodness we donât have to dress like that anymore. đ
I find dresses super comfortable in the heat âïž but I definitely donât wear heels đ
Dresses weren't tight actually. They were just fitted well to the wearer. Complete movement because clothing waa made way better and not wonky and junky like today.
You will see plenty of tight pants today, they always look like they melted their legs and poured them in, to get in them. Definitely doesn't look comfy to me.
â@@disneycicerone right? I just wear a pair of loose homemade cotton shorts under mine and it modest and comfy!
I have an issue in my brain and I don't like people seeing me in jeans so no matter where I go, national parks, the ocean, amusement parks I wear a dress and at least a little bit of heels, so there you go hahaha it is painful and horrible
â@@disneyciceroneI'd wear a nice suit to Disneyland sadly it's not a thing nowadays i love the classy retro fashion
I think the paper hats were a great idea "on paper" but today I'm pretty there would be a lot of them laying around and would be a hazard for attractions because people will think "it's just paper" and not care too much if they lose them, sad because there could be some cool designs for people who can't afford the the more expensive alternative
They would be a fun souvenir for throwback nite or dapper day. I wonder how comfortable they were.
Plus, they were biodegradable, unlike much of the plastic we have today.
I think a better option would be foam or other material. The sun hats where a good idea in thorie to keep the sun off your face.
â@@crystal95405 foam and stuff would also just end up everywhere
I also just kinda thought oh.. yeah a white pointed hat probably not a great idea
Funny story: I was looking through my grandmaâs photo album and one picture caught my attention, (circa early 70s) it was of my mother and aunts all dolled up in front of some picturesque landscaping. I asked my mom if this was Easter, or did they do their first communion? Sheâs like Nah, we just went to Disneylandđ.
Yup, people just dressed in their âSunday bestâ for Disneyland!
Disneyland was much smaller back in the days of heels and dresses. Walking it in heels would have been a lot more doable back then. Nowadays there are two parks to explore, and miles and miles of walking.
People also didn't go for 12hr+ days like they do now... they did a ticket-book's worth of attractions (if that) and had a meal and likely went home because they were mostly local.
That one kid that was afraid of the pig đ
I know đ
â@@disneyciceronepuppets weren't nice as they are today
Yeah, the way the person in the pig costume was all up in the woman's space and moved toward them when the kid backed away made me cringe hard.
Yeah but that was a scary pig.
đđœđ
my great grandma has been going since the beginning & she always recounts how they used to dress up because it was a special occasion & honor to be going to the park & they wanted to look nice for it.
I have pictures of my parents taking my brother & I to Disneyland in the late 60s and my mom was wearing her signature tight polyester capris, LOL. She was a very practical woman and only wore dresses for weddings, funerals, family portrait photos, and very occasionally, a big family holiday dinner.
I mean it still is a special occasion as itâs become so expensive many canât afford it. Nearest Disneyland to me is Paris and itâs still unaffordable for many families. People just like being more practical now.
Also this reminds me of Harrods in London. They used to have a very strict dress code and wouldnât allow anyone in if they werenât dressed formally. Now absolutely anyone can go in. I believe they changed the rule because they wrongly assumed many celebrities were poor or profiled some wealthy people who threatened to sue. Many of the children from wealthy individuals also wear streetwear now.
Now Disneyland is whale land
My grandfather went to the opening day of Disneyland and said he remembered his aunt (an imagineer) getting her shoes stuck in the pavement đ
I really liked working Dapper Day in the park because people behaved much more politely when they were dressed nicely.
thatâs actually super interesting!
That's only bc they pay a lot of money for their outfits
Do you think it was because they were dressed nicely or because people who have manners tend to dress nicer in general?
I have a friend who is also a cast member and they schedule and plan for Dapper Days weeks to months in advance but also go to the parks on their day off. I cannot imagine them to begin any different out of Dappering because in general they're always super nice.
Funny that you mention that cos when I look more dapper while working at Disney, I am more inclined to being nice to the guests. More easy on them.
But when normal, I reinforce the rules more sternly lol
Thatâs actually a cool thing! Itâs weird how these times randomly are gone!
In what way are you related to Disneyland if I may ask? Almost every video is about the park! Have you worked there maybe?
Iâve studied obscure Disney history for about 17 years and finally decided to do something with it (content create and write). I havenât worked there but I know many who have and some imagineers as well. I also am a passholder to Disneyland and WDW so I am blessed to get to go often for âworkâ đ„°
@@disneycicerone thatâs so cool!! Keep it upđ
Btw new subâš
It's not that random, wearing heels is extremely painful and being in an amusement park with children is extremely tiresome, and you're walking all day. Who would wanna do that in heels đđ
â@@disneyciceronethe 80s and 90s was the last of fashion today it's hunger game crap
Back in the 50's, my dad went all the way out to Cali and visited Disneyland with his cousins (they were all about 10-15 at the time). Upon arrival, Disney told them my dad's cousin needed to cut his long hair in order to enter because of the strict dress code. They family cut his hair in the car and walked back to the entrance.
Disney has some trippy rules, or they sure did.
Thatâs completely abusive to the cousin wtf đź
â@@dianedavidson5283 yup! And NO ONE talks about it. đ but complains about everything else.
â@@lifeexpression5036 that's crazy how you don't know what the word "abuse" apparently means.
â@@lifeexpression5036 oh please, they merely shortened his hair so that they could all go and have fun. Imagine how horrible it would've been for the kid if they all decided to go back home instead. His cousins would've been pissed at him and he would've felt guilty. It would've been abuse if they had left him in the car and went without him or something. Not to mention that a bunch of people even nowadays cut their own hair at home or get a relative or family friend to do it for them, I can assume that it was an even more common practice back then.
I definitely dress like this when I go to Disneyland đ . Love my dresses and skirts with little heels or flats with arch support. But then again thatâs life haha
Thatâs so interesting. Never seen one of those before
I feel like no one ever talks about them, but they were so popular once upon a time!
I legit want one now
Because I live in Scotland, when we go to Florida we wear shorts and t-shirts.We normally go in the October holidays,we call them tattie holidays here because Ethan is when the potatoes are harvested.
Sorry not Ethan, I ment to say â because IT is when the potatoes are harvestedâ
Thatâs a fun term for your holiday! I donât think Iâve ever heard that before, and I even used to live in Ireland đźđȘ
Girl she really drew out that answer đ
I thought some would love to see the historical pics and footage, especially for those who like to disney bound or go to dapper day. So it wasnât drawing it out, it was intentional to let people see the outfits đ
â@@disneycicerone you were right on my account!
No way I could ever wear a dress and heels at a theme park. So glad I missed that decade.
Lots of dresses and skirts especially linen is way more comfortable to me than jeans during summer days
I'm old enough to remember that people would dress up every time they left home. Shopping, traveling, church etc..I miss those days..
my mom told me that when my grandmother was younger, she'd always wear little gloves and a hat when going into town! I was lucky enough to see pictures too! Very interesting time.
you and me both. I remember when women would die a painful death rather than appear in public looking sloppy or like they just rolled out of bed. I STILL dress nicely whenever I leave the house.
in a way i understand, but why should people need to look their best all the time when outside? thats exhausting and not everyone likes those things.
I love the older style. đ
Whatâs funny is on my recent trip to Disney there was a mom wearing a tight jump suit and heels chasing (literally running) after two little girlsđ . Props to her!!
I had to turn the sound up and watch twice. Love the use of "I Enjoy Being a Girl" from Flower Drum Song. One of my favorite musicals. Also the lady in the pink and orange diamond shirt halfway through kinda looks like my grandmother.
I wear comfy ultraboost and my feet are killing me after a day of Disney I couldnât imagine what doing it in heels would feel like
The paper sun hat is way better than buying a plastic visor ad hoc but I'd prefer to bring my own wide brim hay.
i wore a dress to disney, dresses are good for the summer in florida
Me too ..always dressed up ..hair n make up ..a dress now for me is a special event x
I MISS THOSE DAYS. My Mom always looked so stylish
Ahh I thought it was hats overall. I think about that people hardly wear hats anymore. Except to church. Guys still wear hats though on many occasions.
Iâm laughing my ass off seeing all the children terrified of the characters đ
I just realized that, because my dad and his parents went to disney every year in the 60s and 70s, you might have seen them in your research. You've definitely seen a bunch of people's parents/grandparents/ great grandparents. Its kinda cool to think about
That's why they do dapper day at disneyland and California adventure it's so classy and raw cuz it was back then â€
I love dapper day đ„°
@@disneycicerone I so wanna get into it but I'm very skeptical about it because I saw that in downtown disney some store was selling dapper day dresses and bags and I saw the prices and I was like đđđđummmm it was Hella expensive
You donât have to buy a Disney sponsored âDapperâ outfit, most definitely donât. Itâs pretty easy to scour thrift shops or discount stores for modern clothing with vintage style & put something together yourself, or make it from scratch if you have sewing skills (or a friend who does.)
You still see those girls (usually on a date) in a cute but not at all comfortable outfit and sometimes you can see her again hours later about to fall over and just absolutely dying
I love 50s and 60s outfits
Some of those pictures bring back so many wonderful memories. (Born 1960)
đ„°đ„°
The parks were smaller then too. Can you imagine hiking thru the ticket and transportation center getting on the crowded ferry boat or monorail then hiking thru all the expanded lands of the magic kingdom IN HEELS?! Unless you're She-Hulk it would be horrible on your feet and back. Lol
Disneyland was much smaller than Disney World đ
The pix of the kids wearing them reminds me of the little Oysters in Alice in Wonderland đ«
I couldn't imagine walking around the parks in heels
They wore comfortable heels, way more comfortable than today's heels/women's shoes. You could wear them for 6 hours+ and still feel no pain.
@@x_.mizuki._x3231 they still make those type of heels. I have bought a pair designed for wide feet but I canât wear heels that long due to flat feet.
@@x_.mizuki._x3231oh wow, where could you get a pair of those today?
@@x_.mizuki._x3231 And how would you know this?? Heels in general are not comfortable no matter how squishy they are. They completely change the way your back is shaped while you wear them so if youâve got scoliosis like me itâs a bit of a nightmare.
@@happysloth3208 I also have flat feet and scoliosis đ Wearing heels for a long time isnt it
That's a pass on the high heels for me, my plantar fasciitis could never đ but I love those paper hats!!
I know, I donât think Iâd want to wear high heels all day in the parks myself đ
I was JUST watching the imagineering story today on Disney plus and I noticed, when they were talking about the grand opening and showing footage, how nice people were dressed! And I totally envied it until they said that the blacktop was basically melting because of the heat and the ladyâs heals were sinking into the blacktop đ
Yeah they poured the asphalt super late in the process⊠they had to move the TV cables for the opening day broadcast out of the way to pour it đ if you look at pictures from Waltâs 30th anniversary 5 days before opening, the streets are still just dirt đ
I love that backpack. Also they need to bring that back, the sun hat is mean
Love the paper fun hat concept!!
Me too!
My grandma has dementia but recently she gave me an old scarf that has Minnie Mouse all over it. It is _super_ thin and I put it in a bag because I donât want to ruin it. She said is was her moms. The color is so faded all I could say it is was I think grey with a warm toned Minnie pattern
Thatâs amazing!
the people in the 20s~60s just dressed so well! Even up to the 80s, sometimes.
I love the 60âs styles and fashion. I also love a 60âs themed beach resort called Cabana Bay in Orlando, FL. Itâs a Universal Resort (and I know Disney is your thing) but it is so amazing! It has two pools, a water slide, lazy river, bowling alley, arcade, Starbucks, gift shop, and food court (Bayliner Diner)!
I went there. I really loved the design đ
@@Dani_7077 Nice! Yeah I love the design too.
1970 Grad Night. Dress code was dresses with a limit of 4" above the knee. I wore French heels. OH, WHAT A NIGHT!!
Heels are a lot less practical for what the park is today than back then. I'm sure lines weren't as long and everything was far more chill.
It definitely was different. And people usually used their ticket books, had a meal, and went home because they were mostly locals.
It wasnât practical to walk around on cement in heels even in the 50s & 60s. Itâs simply that society had such rigid gender expectations for women that they were expected to look like that all the time, regardless of how impractical or uncomfortable it was.
Awe! Great editing thanks for sharing
Youâre welcome đ„°
The paper sun hat is a great purchase. They should bring it back. Make it eco-friendly.
I wish they would bring it back!
Dapper day every day basically lol đâ€
I think that they still had paper hats in a theme park here (I might be wrong honestly) until 2000 something, because I vaguely remember wearing them (Netherlands).
Also the hats remind me of those Christian headcoverings
i wore stiletos to my sisters wedding for the whole thing and had no paint but theyr are well made shoes - some shoes are just built better just like in the 50's with the heel balanced perfectly in the middle of the foot with a well placed arch and flat ball of foot that flexes. that's how they got around in heels w/out pain
That was my Mom!!! Always a dress with Matching heels and purse complete with complimentary hat. The only thing she didn't wear at Disneyland was gloves. đ± The horror! đ
Thatâs wild!
I canât imagine a Mom in the early 70âs wearing a mini skirt and platform shoes in Disney all day.
Same thing as flying on a plane.....when i was little we have to dress so fancy and now ppl travel on pj!!!
Yes, times have changed LOL
Song in the background is âI enjoy being a girlâ from âthe flower drum songâ
Indeed⊠but without the lyrics bc they are a little đł
@@disneycicerone itâs much MUCH nicer without the lyrics. I agree the lyrics are đł Songs like this one convince me that Oscar Hammerstein never actually ever talked to a lady before. But the medley is fun! And it wasnât Oscarâs
Wonderful video!!
I used to have a Disney visor! Mine was plastic, though, not paper.
I love theirs hats, I don't know when sun protection became out of style
It should make a comeback. I could use a good hat on hot days!
A Disney land paper sunthat should make a comeback
I agree!
we need to bring these back!! :D
I always try to look my best when going to an amusement park, totally tripped me out seeing people in pajama bottoms and ugg boots one time .. maybe annual pass holders that lived nearby ? Lol
I DID wear a dress and heels to Disneyland, on Grad Nite 80.
Hell yea dood. Suits and sun dresses are indeed âNEXT LEVELâ EXTREM3!
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing this :)
Youâre welcome đ
That image is the most relatable thing ever
I admire the people who still dress decently at the parks. I'm not talking about going all out, but pants or shorts without holes, a nice-looking shirt that fits properly, and nice shoes. I am amazed by what some people decide to wear to the parks. It's my favorite part of people watching.
Like leggings or workout clothing đŹ
My Grandma went to Disney land in the 60's. She said "Everybody dressed up".
They wore their Sunday best đ
I have the mini version of your bag!
Itâs a great one! đ„°
My first time at Disney world my mom had someone book the whole thing for us and they was her job! Imagine literally going to Disney world every day
Trust me itâs still like this in Japanese Disneyland, where they treat it like an official date place for cutesy dating outfits. Yes that includes heels, makeup and hair⊠I donât think the girls go on crazy rollercoasters đ
I canât wait to go to Tokyo Disneyland!
One thing to consider is that for a lot of low income families, this was the type of splurge that took years and years to afford. My dads poor as dirt family got to go once and it was also one of the only times they paid to get photos developed. So for that reason I can see the women wanting to dress up.
Yes, it was common in that time for people to wear their Sunday Best when they went anywhere special, Disneyland included.
I love the paper sun hats!
It was so hot when I went to Disney that it literally made me never want to come back. I got ridiculous sunburn even with sunblock, it rained every single day at dinner time and the price of food wasnât worth it at all.
Heels used to be designed with comfort in mind. The shape has changed in more recent times and it makes them much harder to walk in and much .ote uncomfortable.
And to think it was going to be the Disney bag all along lol đ€Ł
Keep in mind back before the park was a pay once and all the rides are free.
You got to get into the park for free but had to buy tickets for the rides.
Meaning there were not as long of lines.
No Mom was standing in 1 line with the kids over 60 minutes to ride a ride.
At the most it was 15 minutes before they got on the ride.
There also was not as many rides then as there are now.
So no one was crowded, you could stroll around and take your time. After all, you only paid for 5 rides and the rest of the time there you sat at a restaurant or looked through the shops.
Now, you wear practical shoes for standing, walking fast to the next ride trying to get in as many rides as you can in a day before you or your child had a melt down.
True. Ticket books were introduced in October of 1955. Many would just do the rides in their book, have a meal, and go home.
It always amazes me that people used to dress up to go to amusement parks. Like I've seen home movies of my local amusement park around the same time and there's a large amount of people dressed in "Sunday best".
I think the etiquette used to be that if you paid a bit more to go to a place, you would dress nice. Totally glad we don't do this cause the chafing and foot pain would be horrendous.
They were blessed no strollers make those little guys walk
Heels⊠at the parks⊠do not compute! đ I would die!
Haha I donât wear them personally, my back could never đ
Um. I want them to being back the paper sun hats. I would buy and wear one. đđ„°
Looking at this video times have definitely changed...FOR THE BETTER
Omg, I went to a Disney Dapper Day one year they were handing out Disney Paper hats to the first couple hundred Dappers that day. I got one I didn't know it was a hat I thought it was a fan đđđđ
Ooooh Iâve never heard of them handing them out!
I was hoping it was gonna be the old yellow ponchos
I miss those đ„ș
đ Yeah, super practical to wear heels đ at Disney. đ Yay! For the Patriarchal Misogyny đ€š Glad some things have changed. Looks like Florida is doing more than it's part to try to bring back the 50's though. đđ€Ź
Hm. I do (very much!) appreciate that we as women have the choice to wear whatever we feel like these days. But that doesnât automatically make a certain type of clothing associated with patriarchal misogyny⊠I can wear vintage looks and still be a woman who owns her own successful small business in a field that has historically been dominated by men. I put on clothing that makes me feel confident and comfortable in my own skin, and if it happens to look like it did back in that era, that doesnât mean Iâm somehow erasing the progress we have made as women. If people want to wear heels and dress up at Disney, I donât see how that is hurting anyone đ€·ââïž
@@disneycicerone You can wear heels đ if you want, certainly. They're your feet and most likely your blisters as a result of the heels. đ

I have a picture of my family at disney from a while ago I would love to share with you!
Iâd love to see it! Instagram is a great place to send me historical photos đ
They should bring that back
I wouldn't mind wearing a dress in Disney, but I draw the line at heels.
Yeah same here, to be honest đ
i still dress up and vintage in the park
Me too. Itâs not common though outside of dapper days đ
that's what Dapper day is for.
Exactly it's so much fun to go and dress up but other days it's way too muchđ
I love dapper day! And throwback night was so fun đ
Bring back the paper sun hat!!!
Yes!!
Me tempted to pull the mother 50's - 60's fashion at Disney one day
I've seen those in old park photos, but I never put together what they were! đ
They are so fun đ„°
This fashion is so appealing.
I still wear my pinup.disney dresses to the parks
We need to bring back 60s style fashion.
i thought it was gonna be the pluto hats
I can't imaaaaagine heels. I've struggled to find the right shoe for Disney and I live 20 minutes from it.
The shoes were made better back then, and women were more used to wearing them. People also didnât spend 12+ plus days at Disneyland because they were usually locals.
I went to Disneyland this summer. I tracked how much we walked that day. It was 12 miles. No way am I wearing a dress and heels to Disneyland. đ
Yeah I donât wear heels⊠just fun outfits đ
I have pics of my brother and I with a pig character from 1975.
Probably one of the three little pigs. They were popular in the parks for a long time.
I think they caught on that profits could be made from selling visors and hats instead of giving away paper. Although with nostalgia in fashion Iâm sure they could sell a visor version today for a short while as a novelty and people would eat it up.
It was probably a lot easier to wear heels when disney world was like 1/10th the size it is now.
