This was my first half, and I wasn't expecting much with the cold and difficult course, but I absolutely smashed my goal! Finished in 1:44 and the crowd energy was a big part of it!
Lot’s of great support from the crowd on a particularly cold day
Congrates !
Christian always comes with the greatest insight! I didn't run this year but cheered for all the ones who did!
Thank you!!!
Thank you for the info, Christian. I will be running my first United Airlines NYC Half Marathon in March of 2924.
Oh man, what a wait!
In all seriousness, awesome! I put my name in the lottery and am hoping to come back from injuries and give it a shot myself in 2024.
I enjoyed watching your video! I ran the race too-cold, but fun day!
💯
Congrats and great recap as always. I unfortunately missed my sub 2 hour goal and finished 2:03. I’m looking forward to some warm weather runs here pretty soon lol
Yea I think that weather made me ready for a warmer run haha
omg no way! I am in the back of some of these clips! I remember watching your vids from previous years to prepare myself for this race and remember seeing the selfie stick on race day but I had no clue it was you!
Haha that’s funny! Hope the race went well for you
@@ChristianRunsNY yesss hit my PB! the crowd congestion in the beginning was a little tough but overall happy with my performance haha
How do you remember so much of the race??!! All I remember was it's cold and that the hills at the start were actually not all bad 😅. I feared they would be worse and was wayy too conservative on them. It truly was perfect race conditions once we finally got going though. I missed the two hour mark but boy was I running my fastest splits at that last 5k. Would love to race this again if I have the opportunity to do so.
I love reliving it, it probably helps that I’m filming and looking around and noting things in my head for CZcams haha.
The hills in the beginning are filled with excitement and adrenaline. It’s like the NYC marathon, nobody thinks back about how tough a climb up the Verrazano is since it’s so early but it is actually pretty big.
Hope you do get to run the half again!
Great summary Christian and some good tips on logistics which I hope to use for next years race having missed this one. Fantastic effort given your truncated preparation.
Thank you, always hope some of the tips for these races I do fairly often help everyone squeeze something extra out for themselves.
One of the best video on nyc hm. Very informative. Simply awesome.👍👍👍👍👍
Too kind, but appreciate it!
Thanks for the race overview
Love the recap!! Motivation for my upcoming half
Great video,Thank you
Congratulations on your finish! It was my first time running this race. I wasn’t expecting it to be so cold and windy. Like you I had some issues that prevented me from training. My goal was to just go out there and finish. Time went out the window when I couldn’t feel my fingers or toes. 😂. Overall it was a very well organized race and I’m so glad I was able to do it. Congratulations again!
Thanks for making this video. So much good info
Great informative video as I take this on for the first time this year
Yes try the Maurten Solids...they are good, I usually take them before the race, I like running in the cold, I'll that this antyime than the 75F NYC Mararthon last year.
Definitely!
Congrats on the race! Enjoy Dallas!
Just some advice for next year, if you can, bring your car to a parking garage near the finish line the day before, and get a ride to the start on race day. This way you have a car ready for you after the race. I put my car in a garage the day before, paid $65 for 24 hours, and trust me, it was well worth it. After the race, I walked a few blocks to get my car, and I was on my way home, nice, warm, and comfortable.
Great option!
I unfortunately missed my sub 2hr goal! Finished in 2.07.20. I registered with a 2.20.00 goal at the start of my training block (was too conservative) so got stuck in some traffic at the start and had to weave around the runners in my wave. On the porta potty situation, most people used the ones before entering the corrals and there were big lines there. Many did not know there were PPs after entering the corral.. thats why the lines there were short
Ahh I see. Good to know that it wasn't clear. I've always seen them in corrals with NYRR so it's a tip I can hopefully share in the future.
It was my first nyc half and it was harder than I expected. I was still happy with my results, but it wasn’t my best. However I wasn’t expecting a best for this race. The energy was really great and the race was super fun, looking forward to the Brooklyn half in may now!
It's a tough course to get right 1st try, honestly. A really fun one to do a second time with some experience on the route. Hopefully we don't get the other extreme of really hot and humid in Brooklyn this year.
I was in wave 1 and agree with you that all race logistics were very well done. This is perhaps my favorite NYRR race (biased perhaps, since I have always managed to meet or beat my goal).
I do love it too, biased also because it was basically the race that got me into running, especially in NYC.
It’s always pretty good weather for goals, but impressive to keep that streak going given the hills!
Cool recap of the race. I totally agree with the porta potties problem. I was at wave 1 and 5 min to race people were still in line for porta potties.
As for the race, my time wasnt as I was hoping for. I guess I underestimated the hills in my training and the weather also played a role. Although I started slow maybe I shouldve started even slower.
It can catch anyone off guard, don’t feel too bad it was a hard day to really warm up as well.
I’m not sure if you saw but even the elite runners were well behind some of their best paces through the first 5k. Like 1:30 off pace they usually can do. It’s a tough course to get right.
RFC with the fireball shots!
Great recap Christian. I didn't think there was too much wind, I had a light terrex jacket with a singlet underneath. Thought it was perfect for these conditions. was in good enough shape to have my fastest miles after 10!
Also if you're having ankle issues (I have a PTT issue). I do a mix of voltaren and arnica gel. Then Saran wrap overnight. Do that for a few nights and especially after hard runs. I think it is helping a lot in the big picture
I’ll have to give that a try. My tendons just haven’t been happy in some spots
Hey! I was literally running right in front of you for a quick stretch here.
Green shirt literally right in front of you at 9:35 hah
My wife’s sign is also visible at 13:41!!
Awesome! Glad to get you a little clip of your race. Hope it went as you hoped!
That guy put the thought of a fireball flavored gu gel in my head and I just shuddered 😖😖
Hahaha some of the Gu Gel flavors that exist already give me that feeling!
@@ChristianRunsNY very true 😂😂 happy to see you got the 2 hour mark! 💪🏻💪🏻
The poncho was the move! I forgot I donated mine last month - was looking for it the day before race day with no luck! Great race!
It really was perfect for the weather
congrats Christian!!! :) it was a very windy day! i ran a 10k race in Brooklyn and it was cold!!!! LOL
I knew when I took a sip of ice in a cup it was colder than it even felt haha
Good job 👏 Christian
Thank you!
On my 2nd straight day with many more to come without taking a day off mine legs exercise routine went well and who knows if things gets back in order I might see u in our public street running Christian yes 😃
Great recap .. it was cold ! And that cutting wind was zero fun ..
I couldn't believe all those cones down behind Bellevue haha
Glad you had a good race! Congrats!!!! I was looking at our splits. You started 1 min before me and my pace for the first 5K was 10. I started slower than you. That's how we missed each other 😭 For me, I was FREEZING while waiting to start. Once I started running I felt good. I felt strong till around mile 10. The last 5K was AWFUL! I pushed on but it was TOUGH and not fun at all! Glad it's over 😁 NOw focus on the Brooklyn Half. How to beat 1:58:19 🤔😁
You can get there, you just finished the Tokyo Marathon and are so close! Hopefully it isn't hot this year in Brooklyn.
@@ChristianRunsNY I hope for better weather this year! 🤞🤞
Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from the race cause my right knee is still hurting from a fall a few weeks ago. I wanted to know what you are using for your legs, I'm using bio-freeze for my leg to get to 100%.
BioFreeze is really just masking pain, so I try to avoid it in my case since I’ve had some more long term issues that I do want to feel. This way I knew when training was becoming too much or if I held up okay.
I think with any injury diet is big, and then just giving myself the rest and ice with elevation. For a fall I’d personally probably add some Advil to help swelling and some discomfort since it was more of an acute injury in your case.
Sorry you had to miss it! You’ll be back!
This race could have been difficult 4 me if I would have try it because of the cold weather now
Hey Christian on mine 3rd straight day working out my legs in a different way because I need to focus on my upper front leg where it got injury it feel strong and getting fatter where if this continue this way I will try to do a running workout on April now 👍
Hey Christian if my workout goes great with no upper front legs pain I am targeting a may running event with new york road runners club 👏
Great update! Take it slow, but you're on a good path it sounds like
Having almost 5 month of not doing exercise I just cannot take a break now and my running workout will start in april 2023
