It's very much a "lifestyle", since it not only means your family has "white collar money but a blue collar attitude" (those guys are tradesmen, but they are often paid amazingly due to the wealth of oil companies - some would say the best of both worlds but they rarely fit into either and often must stick together for comradery) but also oilfield workers and their families often don't live in one place for very long, as their companies constantly move them between sites.
That's why he has a picture of himself in the work overalls and hardhat, there's great pride in the work, and he's obviously embraced his family's trade.

Here’s why I think the growing sponge bio is hilarious: It starts off as role play/fan fiction type story and the mention of “I’m quite the grower” makes you think it’s sexual. Then he mentions falling asleep wet and I think anyone would be like “...kind of a weird fantasy but okay” and then there’s the big reveal that he’s a sponge, which shows that the whole thing is a joke which is relieving. I think the twist in expectations and the fact that the person is making fun of the writing style is what makes it so funny.
