Making a titanium Framelock knife

- My process for making a framelock flipper folder. This is not an instructional video but rather an overview of how I go about it. I am not a machinist as you can see and my process is very primitive in today's standards of folder making. But you can do it without the modern equipment, it just takes more time. It is manual machining and definitely fits the "handmade" category. #framelock #linerlock
There is much more that just can't be covered in one 10-15 minute video. I skipped showing most of the heat treating process and blade grinding but there is several days in the making of a framelock. I have a video already posted on blade grinding. If you have any questions, please post them in the comments.

Heck yeah sir, this is excellent. Thanks for going though the time to put all this together!
Thank you buddy. Love your stuff too! Got to make that surface grinder! :)
@@TonySeverioKnives Heck yeah, sir. Let me know if you need anything when you do!
Finally found it!!
Great!! 😁
thats awesome man great work
Thank you my friend!
7.5 degrees here too!
😁😁
Great blades! Very detailed process, folders like this certainly take practice!
Thank you! Yes and I learn something every day.
I really enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing, man.
You’re welcome. Thank you!
Hey man glad to see you back and great video! Those turned out great and look amazing! This was very helpful as I am dabbling in making folders. Take care!
Thanks Jed for the kind words. Glad to help with some part of it. Thanks for watching!
Great Video!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Thanks for watching, I appreciate it. 😁
Amazing!!!! Talent!!!!!
That is awesome knife 👍🏻👍🏻 I would love to see more in depth look on this scale finish. Absolute love it.
Thank you for the kind words. I’ll have to do a series on the process but it’s not hard. Thanks for watching!
Great video man, I just got my mill a few months ago and am prototyping my first folder design. I am looking forward to the journey this video is very informative, so thank you!
That’s awesome man! I’m glad it helps and thanks for watching!
Man you got a great channel sir, learned alot from you. Would love to see more video's if ya get the chance. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
Thank you! Will some going again soon. 😀
Great video! I really enjoyed watching this. Some day I'll make one of these myself.
Thank you!
Hey, I know what that looks like completed!!! Awesome Build Video!
Yes indeed! 😁
Nice work!
Thank you!
I’d love to see how you made the color and pattern on the scales
Thanks. It’s a process of heat and water. I will make one in the future detailing it. But it’s something that I’m continuing to develop.
@@TonySeverioKnivesI'd love to see that too
Those are really really nice blades and I really enjoyed watching this video. I definitely learned a lot about how locking blade knives are made.
Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad that you may have picked up something from it. That makes it worth making these videos. Thanks for watching and supporting!
@@TonySeverioKnives no problem I meant every word. Awesome stuff
Cant believe me and my brother got these for Christmas!!!!! Amazing!!!!!! Sooo sharp....! wants to cut the Heine whoo whoo!!!
Glad you like it! There was 7 in that batch from where yours came from. Got quite a few more to make also. Happy new year!

Good work...congratulation...
Thank you sir and thanks for watching!
A man after my own heart..............................Geaux Tigers !!
😁😁😁
wow
Thanks. 🙂
Awesome knife making, can't wait to see more in depth videos. Have you ever considered splitting the process into several videos? I know a lot of CZcamsr's do this and it works pretty well I think. It may well be to much work for you though. I know a lot of you makers out there are also doing a full time job so you can do this video production hobby. Great work none the less, keepem coming, and thanks for sharing your work with us.
Hi Dale thank you for the kind words. I have thought about doing that as I’ve done for some of the forging vids but in even more depth. In other words make a more instructional series and less entertaining. I will do some planning for a project. Thank you for watching and thanks for the support.
@@TonySeverioKnives I'm quite certain, both versions would be entertaining.👍
You can send it to me for Christmas if you want to😆
😁😁😁
Great video. I don’t realy understand the proces of making the titanium spring that keeps the blade open. Can you explain that? Thank you!
Thank you. Yes the titanium is bent to make the lock but it has to be thin at some point so that it is not too stiff. I use a ball end mill to relieve an area of the spring to around 45 thousandths. I heat the spring then bend it over enough to take up about half of the lock face. The lock face is ground to match the blade face.
They look awesome....thanks for the how to. What acid/liquid is used to patina/color/etch the titanium ???
Thanks! I use a combination of heat ferric and water to a hive the finish. I’m still working on the process to get it down pat.
@@TonySeverioKnives Thanks Tony. I only used some sandblasting to get a good looking finish.( read : an easy manner to mainly cover ever present scratches). But the finish you have put on your knives is a good looking alternative. Did not see this finish before.
Thank you! I have done sandblasting and Rick tumbled finishes too. I like em all pretty much but just trying new things. 😁
I have made some fixed blades. Though watching your video for folders, there are many more metal machining tools. If you have time, can you provide a list of all your metal working tools. Specifically the drill press/mill, table sled, the types of bits used, etc. Curious the brand of grinders and the forge you have. Not sure what the flatting you did after the heat treat, though obviously an important step. So, as others have noted, a more detailed step by step build would be welcomed if you are able and willing. Beautiful knife!
Thanks Brett. I’ll do a shop tour and explain the equipment I use, I also plan do to a detail build in the near future. Thanks for watching! 😁
Hello. Great job. What material is on the handle, if it is titanium, what brand?
Thanks! It’s 6Alv4 titanium
You are an amazing craftsman! Can you recommend a mini mill? I’m interested in trying my hand at folders. I’m sure ill ruin 1000 before i get to your level.
Hi Jeff thanks for the kind words. I’m not a machinist but if I were going to get a new mill, I would get the biggest I could afford. Rigidity is your friend. I really like Precision Mathews machines. My mill is an old Enco from ‘76. It has a round column and something I would avoid if buying new. You can do good work with them but the round column causes you to loose Z axis location as soon as you loosen it to move it up or down. A square column will keep your location and not slow you down by having to relocate zero. It also will cause problems if you want to convert to CNC. I made folders with a drill press for a few years but it is VERY hard to maintain tolerances. And forget trying to mill with a press. Have fun and thanks for watching!
Tony Severio Knives thanks for the generous and prompt response. Best to you and happy new year!
Your welcome and you have the same!
What steel do you like for your folder blades and frames?
I like titanium for frames and frame locks. But I use stainless and carbon steel blades as well as damascus.
hey - where are you located - you sound like you could be from my old stomping grounds (East Texas). Thanks for the video. Great work.
I’m in south Louisiana my friend. 😁
awesome video Tony may i ask did you build your heat treat oven? and do you have plans for this ? thanks Mark 👍👍
Thanks! I did several years ago. I don’t have any plans but I may try to put some together. It has served me well.
@@TonySeverioKnives i would love to make one like yours ill pay for plans lol
I hear ya. I get some time I’ll try to detail one out.
Hey, I spot an old LSU shirt, where you from? I'm in the BR area and always looking for a mentor!
I’m in Amite Louisiana

Thanks!
What mill is that
That’s an old round column Enco 76 model. It’s heavy for a bench mill.
how do I get one of those beauties !
Right now my books are closed. I will announce openings on my website and social media sites when I can take some orders. tonyseverioknives.com. Thanks!!
Great build! Would love to collab or make something for you. Either a folder collab or maybe I could make a hot stamp for you?
That would be awesome. Right now I’m just too bowed up on orders to side track. Keep in touch, we’ll get one eventually. Thanks!
no stainless steel insert on frame lock? its ok to have contact into steel and titanium????
Yes you can carbidize it or heat treat the titanium lock face end. Heat it cherry red and let it cool. Inserts are a new thing. Heating or carbidizing has been around a long time. Makes a smooth lock with the proper geometry.
