  • For my first video from the East Coast Main Line I travelled to the historic market town of Morpeth which is affectionately known as the county town of Northumberland. Situated 16 miles to the north of Newcastle, Morpeth Station has recently seen a £2.4 million pound restoration of the main buildings which were lovingly restored to Benjamin Green’s original design. The project was funded by the Railway Heritage Trust, Network Rail, Northern, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. I was interested to learn more about plans to reinstate passenger services along the former Ashington, Blyth & Tyne line in the future. I also took the opportunity of visiting the town itself where I learnt about the role that Emily Wilding Davision made to the campaign for votes for women in the early Twentieth Century, and to visit the memorial that was installed in her memory at Carlisle Park in 2018. My video ended at the site of Morpeth Castle where I learnt about the role that the Landmark Trust has played in restoring this important Grade 1 Listed Building. I hope you enjoy watching the video.

The train won't be going faster than 50mph because of the infamous Morpeth curve that will derail trains going faster.

Thank you for the comment. I believe that there have been some derailments caused by over-speed on the curve, the latest of which was back in 1994.
