Unmatched and Elder Scrolls both have free shipping which I absolutely should have pointed out.
Especially since Elder Scrolls is your value pick. I went with the gameplay bundle and added the playmat. Nice that the mat is large and double-sided so planning to use the other side as a playing surface for most of my card games. May add the premium health chips since I don't have those for my copy of TMB.
@@LeeKenshin7 If you don't have a playing surface already the playmat is an okay purchase. I'd advise against the premium health chips, better tactile feel isn't worth the asking price. You're probably fine with just the gameplay bundle, that's already quite expensive.
@@ObsidianKnight90 Thanks for the info. I probably shouldn't get this game anyways; trying to get out of crowdfunding projects and buying games in general as I look at the 150+ games I have. Only reason I'm giving this a pass is that, after a few games, I'm planning to only keep this or TMB. Since I'm trying to buy less games, the focus is shifting towards enhancing the games I have.
The delivery isn't free, it's included. The difference need to be said I think ^^
Nothing is free
Alex.... Let's go to Japan is doing so well because it is so outrageously cute!!! I don't even care how it plays ... it's soooo cute... backed it immediately!😍
I think it is more about the theme...
50:34-50:50 - Alex finds the other game with a Furoshiki cloth! 😊. They are both Japanese themed games is probably why they both have these cloths! 😊
Yes but to never see another one...
Talking about DEI in a video format “to back and not to back” and not mentioning the publisher has really late projects and couple other major ones in their backlog is just bizarre. There is a reason that this project is on gamefound while all others were in kickstarter…
I'm looking forward to the full video on ES:BotSE. Thanks!
:)
I really enjoy your videos! It keeps me up to date on all the boardgames that "happen" al over the world.
Yeah, I always HAVE to wait for the closer. Great one this time. Heheheh...
The only thing that bothers me about crowdfunding is whether the game will ship while I'm still alive.
You don’t know if you want Wild Gardens, but I swear it’s going to be a Rina game!
That's fair 🙂
I’m a huge fan of Unmatched and play tested adventures. The characters are all fun and the co-op is phenomenal.
Yup, April scary and exiting month!
Ty for this video!
Still disappointed the Unmatched campaign is US only. Hoping my FLGS will be able to help me out getting the promos but not holding out much hope
I think it's worth mentioning for Nekojima that the retail edition will not have any of the stretch goals or the KS exclusive expansions.
Totally fair
agreed. KS main draw is exclusive components. Otherwise I'll wait for retail. Unless of course, the publisher is new/ small and I want to support them. 😊
14:20 "Once you factor in shipping..." FYI, Unmatched adventures has free shipping which is rather rare these days...
I do agree, skirmish is interesting but not compelling to me. But the Coop mode looks much more interesting to me. I hope they come out with more coop villains.
Oh my gosh, that needs a full update next week, not cool that I missed that.
@@BoardGameCo I believe it's only North America delivery as well.
The problem with Galactic Renaissance is the shipping. While it is about 20€ to ship to the US, it is 250€ to ship to Israel. That is an immediate no for me.
When the thumbnail is the only 3 games ive backed so far. haha
Great choices then :)
Totally agree about Last Kingdom. I absolutely loved the TV show but I HATE that they've used photo stills. It just looks lazy, dated and dull! So disappointed and it means what was a instaback totally turns into a hard pass.
Yep, movie stills are...not great
Will Gamefound ever have an android app ?
Alex, have you played D.E.I in solo mode? Thoughts? (I assume not, since I think it requires one of the expansions and you said you haven't used any of the expansions.) I'm really on the fence on this one. I dont have any area control games.
I tried it last week. The solo mode is decent, pretty easy to run and the AI is fairly competitive. However, AIs for area control/dudes-on-a-map games tend to suffer in comparison to playing with people and DEI isn't really any different in this regard.
It's not the worst solo mode I've played....but I don't thinking buying this game for the solo mode alone is a good idea.
@@AdamJorgensen Thanks for sharing your experiences and insight. I agree, most games suffer when not playing another person. But was solo play good enough to learn and develop strategies for when you do play against others?
@@timf7354 I don't think so. The solo mode revolves around a single, specific faction from the White Death expansion/stretch goal box which plays extremely differently from the other factions in the game.
Whereas most factions in DEI are trying to generate supply, complete missions and control the bases, the Faun faction (which is playable as a human too btw) that the automa runs is focused around destroying the bases completely, thus denying access to the cubes and market slots associated with those bases.
It's actually this uniqueness to the Faun faction that makes it competitive, since it's gameplan is basically to just raze things to the ground which is fairly easy for an automa system to manage. However, since it runs using a card draw system you can end up having turns where the automa does something stupid like:
1. Jump off roof
2. Jump back on the same roof
3. Harvest the resource that is on the roof
XD
April is going to be insane.
During the Doomlings section the game you couldn't remember the name of is Here to Slay.
Thank you!
I have over 20 unplayed games in my new collection.
Really interested in D.E.I. However, how it would compare to Scythe? I kinda get the same vibes from both (maybe i'm wrong) and owning Scythe already kept me from backing it already. Are both games worth owning? Or is one clearly better than the other?
It's actually pretty similar to Scythe in terms of feel and concept, although the execution is quite different and overall the variability (so far at least) feels better. Combat plays even less of a role in DEI than it does in Scythe.
However, I would strongly recommend you DO NOT get DEI in crowdfunding. You DO NOT need the minis for this game. It is pretty much a eurogame through and through, the minis do not contribute to the experience in any meaningful fashion. The current pricing in this new campaign for the All-In with Minis is grossly inflated and the game as it stands is simply not worth what you're paying for it due to the production quality being pretty so-so.
Get the meeples version in retail, if you like Scythe you won't regret it.
@@AdamJorgensen thank you very much for your help. I'll follow your advice then and buy the retail version. Appreciated
What's with Townfolk Tussle?
I covered it two weeks ago :)
Thank you!
I didn't know "Furoshiki" was a word.
DEI would be an instant back if it was anyone other than LDM studios. All the signs of Mythic Games 2.0 are there.
My shelf control HAD been amazing...until I saw you could get a deluxe Marrakesh. Dammit Alex!!!
lol sorry about that
I can’t believe I’m still waiting for planet unknown hobby edition from my retail store. That pre order money is just floating in the wind.
that's why I cool off from KS... I don't want to wait for a product loaning $ interest-free to studios that may fail to deliver. At least Pre-orders are legally protected sales. Best of luck to your retail order eh! 😊
I enjoyed the rant at 45:15, everyone should check that out! 😀
I went all in on Elder Scrolls. I keep hesitating to bring it down to the 230$ pledge and just add the items I really want. Since I do not have any premium health chips and those draw bags are expensive, but I feel they are worth it since I will be able to use the chips, bags and dice tray with most of my games. I can really do without the artbook however, but if I got everything I wanted it came up to $365 which would leave me without the artbook and dice tray.
You can buy normal poker chips for much cheaper than the premium health chips :)
@Callum oh for sure, I have 2 great set of poker chips but I feel they give a different vibe :)
Just go down to the gameplay all-in. You don't need all that extra junk.
Do you really need premium health chips when the reality is that they are sitting underneath other chips the whole time, are are not visible as a result?
Alex, how useful do you feel the premium health is for Elder Scrolls?
It’s purely a tactile thing. The normal health chips are a lighter weight and more of a plastic-y feel to them. Premium health chips are identical in material and weight as the character/enemy chips, so give a much more satisfying clacking when stacking, imo. If you’ve got an extra $35 or $40 or whatever they want for them, go for it! Far from essential though….
@@Filthyanimal9 Sounds like an easy skip
Okay I backed D.E.I. Based on you and Devon praising it. This will be a test of how much our opinions align
DO NOT get DEI in crowdfunding. You DO NOT need the minis for this game. It is pretty much a eurogame through and through, the minis do not contribute to the experience in any meaningful fashion. Well Alex it would seem that your pick of the week is a scam
How is it a scam?
@@BoardGameCo The comment above my reply... using caps to tell me not to get it. clearly must be a scam
@@brandonhouston7575 Ah got it. For myself, I 100% prefer the minis version but whichever works for you :)
D.E.I. backer 279 - all in, thanks Alex and Jeese
Something you didn’t mention regarding Unmatched is that it is sadly for CA/US backers only. The rest of the world will have to wait for the retail release through restoration games' partners in other countries. Very disappointing :/
It'll be cheaper at retail anyway. Stop being disappointed they didn't let you spend waaay too much on Unmatched sets. They've even said you'd have gotten your KS Copy later than they're going to be able to get it to you from Retail.
Free shipping on Unmatched!
finally some good games on the board
D.E.I - agree on that it is great game, but what about the bad campaigns of Ludos Magnus Studios ?
What is the risk of LMS going belly up in before they deliever?
Really want to back the new Zombicide, however Cmon usually do not do EU Shipping very well. If the all in is at $300+, then add shipping + VAT, that is alot of money for plastic stuff. Will have to wait and see for content/price.
I'm a little surprised you don't like PvP unmatched, mainly because you loved Super fantasy brawl so much.
I like both games! But not enough being offered through the KS campaign, I'll pick up Unmatched adventures at retail some day. It will be nice to have a co-op option for all of the characters i already own. :)
I think because it's more direct skirmish, I often like objectives mixed into my skirmish games.
If games want to do the "screen captures" for their "art", they should at least draw over top of it (like that movie A Scanner Darkly) to make it look like actual art. I imagine that can't be THAT expensive compared to commissioning all original artwork from scratch. Surprised more games based on movie/show IPs don't do that.
Agreed!
Did you look at Terrorscape? Thoughts?
Not yet, but I will be 🙂
Them roommates might have a point there.
1000% Agree on the MSRP vs KS Sale price. I HATE THAT. I'm curious what you think about Marrakesh along those lines? Queen Games bumped the price about 50 dollars from the original campaign and as much as I want the game. 150 to 200 for that game is seems ridiculous. I understand the balance of paying for mechanics vs cool upgrades and ks stuff. Marrakesh is just rubbing me wrong.
ok so DEI and Dune, got it alex. But... i cant just order one board game, especially during a sale, gotta order more because shipping cost !
You can just use your premium health chips from tmb and save yourself 50 dollars
I plan on doing the opposite.
Never picked up the premium health chips for TMB and plan on using the chips from TES in TMB.
I wanted to get elder scrolls, but the price is so inflated for what you get and having to pay for shipping included in the price.
The people that benefit from this are those that usually have high shipping costs. Since I live in the us, my shipping costs are usually less than everyone else, so in essence I am paying more for everyone else’s savings on costs.
Selfishly, I’d rather pay less money for the game and then pay for shipping then get free shipping. Lots of money for a game that utilizes cheap dice and poker chips.
Why didnt you warn me that the website selling Dune was having a huge sale? Its only the third and i've already blown my monthly board game budget and there are more kickstarters on the way !
Look just going to throw this out there but nice quality dice bags are rare… I regularly find myself needing them for my board games and it’s kind of a pain to find them. I’m not saying I’m getting the Elder Scrolls game but I would have absolutely paid 40 for a good quality set of bags for Massive Darkness 2 instead of the cheap vinyl options they included. I have paid that much or a bit more for nice quality bags for my Arkham File games. It’s a regular thing I have to hunt around for at conventions and even then it’s a difficult find. Etsy is pretty hit and miss too.
We need more nice quality dice bag options for our games.
Totally fair....but the idea of paying a board game price for 2 bags...it's a lot
I’m confused what you mean when you say Elder Scrolls characters aren’t as deep. I feel like the different combinations for characters would add more depth, though TMB has more distinct characters with little overlap
Because of how flexible they have to be to allow the system to work it adds more variety at the cost of interesting and different characters.
Everything you said about Last Kingdom was dead on!!!
Definitely I can't understand the Elder Scroll campaing.. I was so motivated for this game pre campaign - I started on Morrowind like 20 years ago. But the price!!?? I have never play a game from CTG - but I know this game have less physical content than Gloomhaven, seems to have less story content than Tainted Graal and is 195$ for the basic pledge? Even with shipping included... I read, I read everything about and I still miss the reason explaining this cost... What am I still missings!!??
They make great games...really like games.
You’ve never had a Chip Theory Games game. Once you play one, the price may seem more reasonable. But you’re totally right - any way you look at it $195 for a game is a lottttttt of money.
It's a lot of money until you actually play their games. Then you have your money lined up for the next campaign already 😂
Definitely need disposable income to afford their games though
23:04 Because "neko" means "cat" in Japanese... 😉
lol fair
No Crown of Ash?
That was one of the many campaigns I pushed off to cover this next week
Find new roommates who can stay the next 235 years and see whether they notice something maybe :)
lol
Why is everything cats...truth.
"Galactic Renaissance": I don't like what I've seen and it's crazy overpriced for what it is. Sad, I liked "Inis". Where I live, "Inis" is available for around 45€. I really don't see the value of ~140€ after shipping and VAT for "Galactic Renaissance". And don't get me started on those bust-style miniatures ...
"Marrakesh" meh, not that great, and Queen Games cash-grab is despicable. Also, Queen Games should be punished for renaming all those games named after cities into other city names. The most dumb and confusing thing you can do as a publisher!
DEI could be a good game or not, in any way it's too expensive and too many boxes.
And we have a new Zombicide coming, so likely there is no money for other games anyway.
Super odd. This video popped up and I was unsubscribed for no reason?
Nooo! Quick, resub!
Chip Theory's Elder Scrolls was high on my list up until I saw the price point. Even with the "free" shipping, I think I'll get get more bang for the buck on a few other quality games (or I can just save my money).
Since you went on a bit of a rant on The Last Kingdom and price, I'll go on a bit of a rant on D.E.I and VAT. LMS is using the same deceptive tactic that Awaken Realms uses stating that "the difference in tax is being put towards cheaper shipping for other countries". But you don't have to be a tax accountant to see that non-VAT backers are still subsidizing VAT. For example, if you do the all-in pledge at about $300, VAT would be about $60. And yet, shipping to the EU and the US are the same at about $35. Yes, I get that shipping to the US can be more expensive, but I don't think it's $60 more expensive.
When I sent a message to LMS about this, they said "we have not redistributed EU VAT into US shipping costs, but we have cut both in different amount, different win but win/win". No, it's not a win/win. US customers are paying more so that EU customers don't have to pay their taxes mandated by their own laws.
Honestly, I didn't mind so much when Holy Grail Games and Inside Up Games were honest and straightforward about VAT being included for everyone. At least they didn't pretend that they were doing all backers a favor like Awaken Realms and now LMS.
Ok, rant over! Appreciate the roundup. I'm leaning towards either Unmatched or Galactic Renaissance. I recently sold a few games, so I can get both, but I'm still trying to use more restraint in backing games these days. We'll see :D
do you find it hard to cover a 3m+ campaign on the platform you work for? combine that with your channel interests and it has to be difficult. i believe you truly like the game. not sure if its different enough from TMB from what ive seen and what is different doesnt look any more compelling than say a MD2. with so little coverage that wasnt hand selected, not your fault obviously, or done in a controlled environment im not sure i see the value you do.
Good luck Alex. thanks for the video.
Appreciate it...and don't worry, a video is coming later this week on TMB :)
"That's a fantastic deal you won't find anywhere else." Depends on how you read it. "You won't find anywhere else, ever." is a lie. "You won't find anywhere else, at this time." is 100% true. I DO think it's deceptively ambiguous, but there has to be an aspect of buyer's needing to educate themselves as well. Of course that's what you are trying to do, but I don't have a lot of sympathy for somewhat burned by a sentence like that.
While I understand what you're saying...you won't find the game anywhere else at any price right now...so it's less the deal you won't find and more the game period.
When presented with two meanings, if one meaning is a reasonable reading and the other is virtually meaningless and/or blatantly obvious, then the meaning that should be taken is the reasonable reading. "You won't find anywhere else, at this time" is meaningless when talking about Kickstarters for a game that doesn't already exist.
@@thecuriousboardgamer Likewise "You won't find anywhere else, ever" is equally meaningless, as no one could ever make that promise, given sales, used markets, etc.
If you prefer, you won't find anywhere, in the immediate future, is both viable and potentially true, given possible deals with distributors. Like I said though, I still think it's deceptive. But anyone that reads a sentence like that and just takes it at face value is overwhelmingly naive.
Nice joke :)
