  • The Quick and the Dead is a 1995 western film directed by Sam Raimi and starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. The story focuses on "The Lady" (Stone), a gunfighter who rides into the 1878 Wild West town of Redemption, controlled by the ruthless John Herod (Hackman). The Lady joins a deadly dueling competition in an attempt to exact revenge for her father's death.
Writer Simon Moore's script for The Quick and the Dead was purchased by Sony Pictures Entertainment in May 1993, and actress Sharon Stone signed on as both star and co-producer. Development was fast tracked after director Sam Raimi's hiring, and principal photography began in Old Tucson Studios in Arizona on November 21, 1993. Distribution duties were covered by Sony-owned TriStar Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Quick and the Dead was released in the United States on February 10, 1995 to a dismal box office performance, and received mixed but generally favorable reviews from critics.
This was Woody Strode's final performance (the film is dedicated to him), as well as the last theatrical release of Roberts Blossom.

When Cort gives that little half smile, just for a fraction of a second Herod looks genuinely terrified. Like he's scene that look before, but it was so long ago he'd forgotten what it felt like to be there, one little expression and it hits Herod that this time he might lose. Herod can't match Cort's gaze, he looks down and blinks, feeling genuine fear for the first time in years, possibly ever. I love it, it such a subtle little moment in a very unsubtle film.

Did you notice, early in this clip, that they showed the face of the town clock? Go back and check it out. The clock face is in Roman Numerals. This is an authentic depiction of the German influence on clock and watch construction. View the number four on the clock face. One would expect the Roman Numeral IV. What do you actually see? You see, instead, something different; a “made up” “Roman Numeral” IIII. Yes: IIII. Why? Because those very precise German watchmakers were disturbed about the watch face being “out of balance.” They saw the watch face as divided into thirds. This way, the first third of the numbers now have all i’s (I, II, III,IIII). The second third of the watchface now contains v’s (V, VI, VII, VIII). The remaining third contains x’s (IX, X, XI, XII). Life is so much better when things are aesthetic. 😆

@@Biffo1262 It's a Sam Raimi film. By definition, his films exist to make money and entertain. If one managed to become a revered cinematic masterpiece or win Academy Awards for acting, it just wouldn't be Raimi.
Sam Raimi is to Kubrick what Jimi Hendrix is to Baroque music. They have completely different goals as far as entertainment goes. 🤔
