    First class tutorial. A few years ago I had my lens serviced in the UK by a Nikon recommended service centre and it came back as stiff as before, so I just put up with it. After this tutorial it was clear the outer helical has a much stickier grease, I read somewhere this was normal procedure for greasing the outer helical. I used Helicoid 30 grease and it made the action super smooth. I would have liked a slightly higher viscosity grease but it was all I had. It is much better though, particularly in lower temperatures when the lens was a pain to focus. Many thanks for showing us how it is done!

    I cleaned the aperture blades of this lens a month ago and I didnt have the JIS screwdrivers. It was very tough I almost stripped one of the screws but the trick that got me through most of the screws was a QTip lightly soaked in acetone (do not let it drip). you just hold it over the screw you want to remove and it disolves the threadlock on the screws, it makes it a lot easier.
    I am very grateful for your tutorials, I have learned a lot!

    Really appreciate your warning not to disassemble the outer helical (on the barrel) but to clean it in situ. My completionist tendencies would have won out without the warning, but as it is, managed to clean that helical by moving the barrel to the highest and lowest position and scrubbing. Works like new.

    • @diyextravaganza
      @diyextravaganza  Před 14 dny +1

      Hello, thanks. For the pen, anything permanent works, the screwdriver tips are japanese, look for J000, J00, J0, and that's the most important thing, don't try with PH ones, you'll damage the screw heads. About the disassembly, I always try to make it as simple as possible. Best

      Hello again. Understood, anything indelible, & Japanese J series screwdriver bits - I'll seek same out. In the UK & Ireland, not many camera repair outfits exist anymore - a regrettable downturn - consumers only want something 'new & shiny'; happily, whilst I endorse moderrn technology, I prefer solid build quality, & if that means I have to service my own vintage photographic glass, so be it - & of course, there's always that 'kick' of satisfaction when you complete the task yourself.

      @@andrewtongue7084 repairing is a philosophy we terribly lack today, and that at every level (including human interaction) new and shiny always come like the easy answer but reality is usually low quality on a beautiful shell. Repairing makes us appreciate things, get to know them better, and that deep satisfaction of making things work again. Yes, too bad there is fewer and fewer repair people, recently I started working on mechanical shutters myself because according to the friend who challenged me to learn that, there is only two guys in the country doing it so. This is familiar territory for me, too, & in fact, we had a similarly-aligned conversation upon one of your other videos only a few days ago. Together with a number of other passtimes/hobbies, I repair (& restore) vintage fountain pens - as well as some of their modern contemporaries; I do not care for ballpoints or rollerball scribes.
      It is indeed ironic that, in this twenty-first century, where technological communication is near its zenith, no-one actually speaks to anyone - everything is virtual - especially 'friends', or should I call them. mere acquaintances; howsoever you refer to such, it is yet another destructive attribute that disappears as rapidly as a faulty electronic signal. I digress. I wish you well in making good on those mechanical shutters - it's clear you have the required dexterity - then it can be said, there are three guys in the country who can deliver that fait accomplis 🙂
