I just can't understand buying a pet to make it miserable! The whole point of a having a pet is to care for it and provide for its needs! The enjoyment comes when that pet connects with you and doesn't feel like a prisoner, but part of a family.
@@fancyfeet7291 So true, it just isn't fun to watch an animal trying to escape horrible conditions. I don't get how watching a stressed out animal and stressing it out even more is somehow "fun"
Yeah, the way someone said it to me (not that I needed that, I was already planning to go over the recommended minimum space for my beardie) is: "Your enclosure shouldn't be the equivalent to a house, it should be a neighborhood." You can still take them out of that neighborhood from time to time, assuming they can be handled like hamsters or rats or beardies, but it should really cover their needs for exploration as much as their basic requirements for living.
@@masontyksinski5323 Sadly, not really. The _minimum_ size of a prison cell for a single prisoner that is recommended by the International Red Cross Committee is 5.4 m2 (58 sq ft). Which is almost exactly the size from the video. Luckily, some countries now have/are introducing legislation requiring more space than that per prisoner.
I always wondered this, scaling up a hamsters enclosure to human size and seeing just how small it'd actually be. Really puts it all into perspective. 😀
Hey Victoria// Wonderful video as ever! I just wanted to say that I do work in a pet store (not Pets at Home / we dont sell animals) and I've made a business pitch to my bosses to implement large hamster cages into our stores. I made an 11 page google doc about how bad cages are currently, how we need to educate people and actually linked your YT channel to show how big of a community it is; They want to have a meeting with me on 1st March about my idea! I'm really hoping they'll take me up on my idea so we can sell good cages to hamster parents
You need to come prepared for their objections such as... the amount of space a large enclosure takes up in a pet store, displacing other salable items; the amount of profit for a large enclosure compared to a small enclosure that looks bright and fun. Now the positives would be if a large enclosure was mass produced the cost of manufacturing it would decrease allowing it to be more affordable for people who want to buy and treat their hamsters with a humane living environment. You could point out that a larger enclosure could start a huge amount of after purchase items that would now be able to fit in the cage. Different colors, different styles and such leading to a hamster purchase at a small price could lead to more sales and purchases later driving customers back in the store on a more frequent basis to enrich their pets environment. Victoria will say that vertical space does not count but I believe that a three to four floor (each floor 400 sq in) enclosure with safe inclines would add total square footage that is usable and livable while decreasing total square footage the enclosure takes on the floor . A hamster could have a large deep bottom floor suitable for burrowing with a portion for the wheel that would have openings through the second and third floor while allowing the hamster to have other enriching items on other floors. By keeping the food at a higher level the hamster would be encouraged to leave their burrowing space where they could be seen and appreciated by their owner. I have designed many multiple bin enclosures but a bin is a clunky starting point in the design process as plastic bins have to be suitable for releasing humidity and allowing air in but a real good design could be made from the start for a hamster living environment using low weight components suitable for a hamster while relying upon natural elements to enrich a home and the hamsters life.
Maybe like a year ago I wanted a hamster, asked my parents, since I’m 16 and responsible they said yes w/out me having to beg since I already have pets. I picked everything out, bought it (since I have a job), and I bought an ikea detolf. When it got here and I built it with my brother, they said a hamster doesn’t need that much space and to send it back. After a few mins of trying to prove them wrong, ‘I’m the child and their the parents so I’m wrong.’ She went to Amazon and found the a critter trail, she said ‘either this or no hamster bcuz they don’t need that much space.’ I obviously chose no hamster bcuz I don’t want him/her to suffer and I’m sad😔
I'm really sorry to hear that :( It's a shame parents have such a say at the end in how much space you can choose to give an animal in your own room especially when you've paid for it.
You should send your parents this video. Tell them they have been misinformed. And that your ikea detolf would have looked way more attractive and smelled way better than that critter trail would have smelled.
It was same for me at first when I found out I was abusing my baby girl mimiki(she died and we got new hamsters they both live now in separated cages)it’s took like a whole year to prove my mom that hamsters need good bedding and a big enough cage I even sent her a Facebook group but at first she never wants to check the group but when we got my new baby from someone who have a lots of hamsters (in bin cages and good condition)she was wondering why they where living in bin cages and she checked the group and now my new baby have 104l bin cages and even a big play pen and a bunch of toys and a lot of healthy food
Definitely! It's even realistic to hamsters, because my boy's 12 inch wheel takes up more space than those crittertails even have. Not to mention the multichamber hide which is 2x wider!
Amazing! The demonstration was perfect! I hope people who don't know about hamster care see this video! It was pretty entertaining too lol! Keep up the awesome work Victoria!! :D
Honestly the “cage” for the human is a really good and huge cage for a HAMSTER they need a lot of room as you can tell! I made the cage you made for your hammy and mine loves it! He haven’t really came out a lot anymore I know he’s alive because he’s eating but I don’t see him anymore like our bond is broken or something… he is getting older tho so I try to give him the most enriched life possible but I always feel like I’m not doing enough or I’m not good enough for him. He used to come out to play but now he’s in his borrows all the time. I miss him so much. I’m what to do and I’m just tired of sleeping on the couch because of him lol (he is going into a pet room to and getting a new play pen if he comes out) luv u ❤️
The same thing happened when I upgraded my daughter's hamster enclosure so we got the video camera Victoria uses. The camera has an app and whenever it detects movement it will record 10 seconds or so. If you get the SD Card you can choose to play back longer periods of time. You can also set the app to alert you when there is movement so maybe on a weekend when you have nothing to do early the next day you can set it to wake you up and have some play time. It's not too expensive either. We got the Wyze V3 Cam from Amazon for about $40 and the card was another $13. Good luck!
I just love how you explained everything about why the pet store cages are so small by using what it would be like for a human to live in something so small!
I'm gonna point out that the calculations in this video are done for if a human was standing all the time. But we mostly sit in our homes. That takes up more space. We even lie down sometimes and that takes up even more space (our full length x width, not just width x width). So these are my calculations for a human in their most common position when they're hanging out in their home: sitting. The area that sitting takes up is approx 70x60 cm, that is 4200square cm. That makes the cage 4200 x 34.4 square cm. That becomes an area 14,4 square meters. The cage ends up being around the size of 3m x 4,8m which is the same as 9.8 x 15.7 square feet or 154 square feet. Yeah, that is still too small, especially if you couldn't leave when you wanted. And certainly if you're an animal that runs for a living.

What's sad, is that in my country there are even smaller cages sold for hamsters and people like those because they take up so little space and are so cheap. Hey! I always knew pet store hamster cages were too small, but this really helps me understand it even more! And like you said, the enclosure is the hamster’s whole world. And we have the freedom to go wherever we want. I will for sure show this to friends and family! Great job! It’s so terrible that people could do that. I really appreciate your channel! It has shown me and I’m sure a lot of other people how hamsters should truly be cared for.
i remember i used to live in a room this size during my uni and some years of working after that. I am really depressed. But now I moved back home and my mind is cleared.
This was one of the best videos about small hamster cages, it really helped me understand just how horrible they are and it really just puts everything into perspective. Hopefully it will make people think twice about getting a tiny cage for their hamster.
I'm so thankful that you taught me how to properly take care of my hamster. I use to have a 100cmx40cmx40cm cage which is not enough in germany. Nowadays I have upgraded my enclosure into a 130cmx60cmx60cm cage. I'm so grateful thank you:)))
Amazing! I has the comments today that hamsters /rodents ( as I have both hamster and gerbils) don’t need the room as they get stressed. 🤦🏻♀️ we took them from the wild they didn’t ask for this so we have to do what’s best and mimic their habitat.
I love how you give ur hamsters everything they need and more🐹 they are so lucky to have a owner like you. Love your content❤you can tell she puts in so much time and effort into her videos to entertain and inform us x
Wow, this video really helps put into perspective how it feels to be a hamster in a small cage! Thank you for informing people who do not know about proper care. Love your channel Victoria 😊❤❤
I got a hamster months ago, and I started watching your videos. My hamster has such a great life now, something he wouldn’t have if I hadn’t known. I literally bought a tiny tales cage 😭😭 thank you for doing what you do. You’re saving hammies everywhere!
I think the bedding depth is important to mention when comparing it to a humans living condition because sleeping on that thin comforter would NOT be it, I wouldn’t be able to move in the morning lol
This is amazing I’m gonna show my mom this video so she will finally understand why the cage she bought for my mice is the wrong size! I keep trying to explain to her but she does not get it.
My brothers hamster and mine and my little brothers girbils currently have a small cage my mum bought the girbils as a gift and didn’t do her research my brother didn’t either i knew they had a small cage from the beginning i research alot about them and soon they will be getting a 2ft by 3ft cage and lots of bedding, sprays, and lots of enrichment ( Idk if any of this made sense)
This really puts into perspective how small these cages really are for the essential things hamsters need I n their cages. you have inspired me to get my hamster an amazing life. love your videos!
That was funny! You should watch Tiny House Nation (and minivan conversions) to know how to fit even more stuff in smaller places. But honestly, I once rented a room that small (the bathroom was outside) ...it was just for sleeping. My Hammis lived happy following your advice on big enclosures (62x 20 in ) and lots of enrichment. Thx ❤🐹🐭❤
Hi Victoria! I just want to thank you so much for everything! I’m now finally allowed to get a hamster. I’ve binge watched you’re videos for a week and now I can provide my hamster with the proper care!
This is one of the best videos on the internet. It is a shame that you couldn't recreate that most of those tiny rooms are also broken in half and separated by having to traverse a dangerous, enclosed ladder that could result in you getting hurt very badly (or killed) ever time you try to use it.
I just appreciate her so much! Its amazing how she always tryes to help us be better owners! Im glad there are actually pepole carrying about hamsters and not all of them are bad. I saw a few days ago on yt a video where someone was having 16 dwarfs and 3 sirians and the sirians were living in a 15×15 cm cage whit a really small wheel and no food dish or sand bath and the other 16 dwarfs were simply in some horribille plastic glasses and they didnt even had water! I reported those videos multiple times but youtube wont ban that person. I wish that this video will be seen by persons who do that to theyre hamsters and they will understand. Ur amazing Victoria, thanks to you now my hamster lives in a detolf so thank you again!
Thanks for showing this. I’m gonna show this to my daughter, was trying to explain we didn’t have enough space for a decent cage…but she was confused cause the ones for sale were tiny 🤦♀️ this will hopefully help
i work part-time in a pet store, and you're my favourite channel to recommend for people who want to learn more about hamster species and their requirements! thanks so much for what you do, i hate the tiny cages with a burning passion and it's so good to see these videos :)
Because of videos like this I bought a tall detolf cabinet and made a cage out of it for my dwarf hamster. He was extremely scared at first because all his previous life was spent in small enclosures at pet store. Now he loves it. When he comes out for exercise he'll take turns running in his wheel and running around the cage. He's a runt dwarf. Half the size of a normal dwarf. Very small. The cage is like 6 feet long. He has variety for his runs and he loves that. It's so fun to watch him run around. There are different objects in there too that he can climb and jump from as he runs around. He's really a happy little guy.
Hello Victoria, I am so happy I found you a few years ago. I have a little hybrid rescue girl and my grandma is refusing to get me a bigger cage, so I have improvised by building a cage for her in my room while I save up for a permanent cage, your videos have really helped me take care if my babies over the years
This will really help people understand the importance of space for your hamster! No one should determine what hamsters deserve because of there size! You’re amazing Victoria! Love your vids ❤️🐹
Amazing video! It really puts into perspective how small these enclosures are for these animals. You have really helped me with my hamster care and research, and you got me interested in hamster care, so thank you! 🐹💕
You know, a lot of things were said in this video that I quite frankly didn’t think was ever going to be said. Such as “your in my mini fridge” and “stop walking through walls”
Just finished setting up an enclosure for my new hamster, Pepper! She’s very vocal and not afraid to voice (or squeak) her opinion. Your videos have been so helpful for the hamsters I’ve owned!
i used to work at a big pet store chain that sold hamsters, luckily the location i worked at was next to a home depot so I'd always inform customers that hamsters need much more space than any of our cages provided (bc literally every single one was too small) and i even explained how it was cheaper to buy and make a bin cage than it was to buy one of our tiny over priced cages. It sucked because many customers simply didnt care.. but i always tried nonetheless
Absolutely fantastic video to demonstrate a enclosure for anyone who has or getting a pet, so much respect for you in the care and welbeing you have for your pets .. animals in general (fur babies) so funny how the cats get involved especially the black one sitting in the toilet square and trying to blend in with the black t.v .. you should do an out take video as you have a great sense of humor. Have a great day x
I explained this to my grandparents and first they were like the duel bin cage that we have is big enough, I was like no it’s not and I I showed them your videos and probably next weekend we are getting a IKEA detolf! Thank you for teaching me everything ❤️❤️❤️
I had a critter trail before I started watching you! Now my hamster is in a 40 gallon fish tank with lots of fun activities. I am your biggest fan ever! I love you 🤍🤍💞💞💞🐹btw dont listen to the hate comment because you have so many amazing people watching your videos all the time!!!
I remember I made so many mistakes when I first got my first hamster Peaches (dead now, I'm on my second hamster, Sweetie). I had gotten her a Crittertrail (biggest cage they had but still too small what the heck) and was using a hamster ball. There were some truly horrible and potentially deadly mistakes that I never made, such as type of bedding and I thankfully never got her wet but still, you literally made that hamsters life better in the end. Now I'm reusing the new cage for Sweetie and I've got her a playpen and I'm planning on getting her toys. Every hamster deserves a good and happy and fun life.
I thing I REALLY don't understand is the point of view where we give animals AS LITTLE space as possible??? It's MINDBLOWING to me. NO human would accept that. They would be driven mad like the animals themself. Its not about "who little space to survive" it about "HOW BIG for a comfortable life" and "Can I even provide that?"
im really glad that u addressed this fact because im only really sick and tired of hearing family and friends tell me that giving hamsters a big cage is giving them a mansion and honestly i really frustrates me so much. not to mention that hamsters need like a big wheel and tons of bedding. and the wheel takes up like 1/4 of the small cage and if u try adding in a decent amount of bedding it causes the wheel to stop moving cause of the friction from the bedding.
im so glad i got a huge enclosure for my hamster! it’s the niteangel bigger world cage with many other niteangel products such as the wheel, platform, tunnel and more! my syrian hamster, ruby is thriving because of u! u made these videos that educate people on proper hamster care and i love that. ty victoria raechel!

Yeah, the way someone said it to me (not that I needed that, I was already planning to go over the recommended minimum space for my beardie) is: "Your enclosure shouldn't be the equivalent to a house, it should be a neighborhood." You can still take them out of that neighborhood from time to time, assuming they can be handled like hamsters or rats or beardies, but it should really cover their needs for exploration as much as their basic requirements for living.

i remember i used to live in a room this size during my uni and some years of working after that. I am really depressed. But now I moved back home and my mind is cleared.
This was one of the best videos about small hamster cages, it really helped me understand just how horrible they are and it really just puts everything into perspective. Hopefully it will make people think twice about getting a tiny cage for their hamster.
Really happy to hear that! 💕
I'm so thankful that you taught me how to properly take care of my hamster. I use to have a 100cmx40cmx40cm cage which is not enough in germany. Nowadays I have upgraded my enclosure into a 130cmx60cmx60cm cage. I'm so grateful thank you:)))
The cats make things 100x funnier!! 😂💗
...And don't forget the walls around the space, youll have less to look at as well. and com added claustrophobia feeling as well
Amazing! I has the comments today that hamsters /rodents ( as I have both hamster and gerbils) don’t need the room as they get stressed. 🤦🏻♀️ we took them from the wild they didn’t ask for this so we have to do what’s best and mimic their habitat.
I really love how Victoria is always helping us be better hamster owners!
I'll always try my best!
I absolutely love your channel and your hamsters are most likely really really happy ( and adorable)❤️❤️
Thank you Neve!
❤️❤️
I upgraded my hamster cage and the bedding depth and she stop chewing on the bars I am so happy!!!
That's really awesome to hear!
I love how you give ur hamsters everything they need and more🐹 they are so lucky to have a owner like you. Love your content❤you can tell she puts in so much time and effort into her videos to entertain and inform us x
Thank you!!! 🥰
I love how you show such important topics to the wellbeing of pets in such an educational yet interesting way!
Love this channel , really educational. Can’t wait too welcome my first hamster into its lovely new home with all I have learnt off here 🥰
Wow, this video really helps put into perspective how it feels to be a hamster in a small cage! Thank you for informing people who do not know about proper care. Love your channel Victoria 😊❤❤
I'm showing this to my mom. She never understands why i provide my hamsters with so much space!
I got a hamster months ago, and I started watching your videos. My hamster has such a great life now, something he wouldn’t have if I hadn’t known. I literally bought a tiny tales cage 😭😭 thank you for doing what you do. You’re saving hammies everywhere!
So happy I could help 🥺
guys, you gotta give your humans bigger enclosures than that.
This is so great!!! I love that you are letting others see the reality of there pets way of living!
I think the bedding depth is important to mention when comparing it to a humans living condition because sleeping on that thin comforter would NOT be it, I wouldn’t be able to move in the morning lol
I’m pretty sure it’s just a size reference since she doesn’t have a twin to put on the floor
This is so important and I'm so glad someone translated it this way....... but also the black cat sitting in the tape box around 8:36 LOL
This is amazing I’m gonna show my mom this video so she will finally understand why the cage she bought for my mice is the wrong size! I keep trying to explain to her but she does not get it.
This was my comment! Glad you liked the idea ☺️ Having the human equivalent as a visual definitely puts pet store hamster cages in perspective!
Thank you for leaving it!!!!! ❤️ It was a really great idea!
My brothers hamster and mine and my little brothers girbils currently have a small cage my mum bought the girbils as a gift and didn’t do her research my brother didn’t either i knew they had a small cage from the beginning i research alot about them and soon they will be getting a 2ft by 3ft cage and lots of bedding, sprays, and lots of enrichment
( Idk if any of this made sense)
It's great you're planning to upgrade their cage!
This really puts into perspective how small these cages really are for the essential things hamsters need I n their cages. you have inspired me to get my hamster an amazing life. love your videos!
Hi Victora im making a bin cage because my cage is small we got a 104 L bin which is like 600 and something sqaure inches thanks for helping us!
It's great you're upgrading!
Thx ❤🐹🐭❤
Your human cage would be a good size for a hamster cage
that "home" you made into a house is the size of my rabbit play pen when im not home-
FIRST , GIV ME A HEART
well you tried and it's the effort that counts haha
Haha
Hi Victoria! I just want to thank you so much for everything! I’m now finally allowed to get a hamster. I’ve binge watched you’re videos for a week and now I can provide my hamster with the proper care!
and imagine it with your worst enemy living in there with you. thats like with a 1 small enclosure, and multiple hamsters in it.
This is such a good idea to show people how small pet store cages really are!
I love your videos! ☺️
Love your content! Really brings things into perspective on a whole other level to see those numbers so visually 👏🏼 Keep inspiring✨
I died when she said “welcome to my crib” 😂😂
at 02:50 i LOVE YOUR CAT!!!!! and you know that I love you too!!!
7:47 here it looked like you were holding your feet but it’s the controller lol😂❤
i work part-time in a pet store, and you're my favourite channel to recommend for people who want to learn more about hamster species and their requirements! thanks so much for what you do, i hate the tiny cages with a burning passion and it's so good to see these videos :)
I love that you did this!!!❤ it's adorable how far you went to do this. Some people need to see this to know how crule they are beings to there pets.
Thank you! I really hope it can help others see it more clearly!
Hello Victoria, I am so happy I found you a few years ago. I have a little hybrid rescue girl and my grandma is refusing to get me a bigger cage, so I have improvised by building a cage for her in my room while I save up for a permanent cage, your videos have really helped me take care if my babies over the years
As a family who loves hamsters we’ve learned so much from you, Victoria😍 thanks so much for what you’re doing 🌷
thank you for bringing awareness to these topics and we are so glad we can depend on you 🥰🐹
I'll always try my best to when I can!
@@VictoriaRaechel and that’s all me ask 🥰🥰

This will really help people understand the importance of space for your hamster! No one should determine what hamsters deserve because of there size! You’re amazing Victoria! Love your vids ❤️🐹
Really happy I could help 🥺
😄
Love this video and how it really puts everything into perspective. A lot of people just don't understand why small cages are just too small
Amazing video! It really puts into perspective how small these enclosures are for these animals. You have really helped me with my hamster care and research, and you got me interested in hamster care, so thank you! 🐹💕
I LOVE THIS where you live in the small space
I bought some merch on Saturday, I can't wait to wear the hamster lover sweater!
It arrived!
At 9:16 her cat blended in with the tv! It terrified me we he/she moved! Hahaha
One of your best videos Victoria! Eye opening, you hit this one out of the park :)
Ah thank you!!
Actually u would think it would be 1.5x bigger than that, but still would be like prision sized
Great Video As Always!😁
Thanks as always!! 💗
This is such a good way of describing this, hilarious and to the point!
I appreciate seeing people using Victoria's information, as she is a amazing hamster care ``Teacher``!
8:31-JJ sitting on the toilet🤣 This video is so good for the people out there who really need to understand with examples!
This video was literally so awesome! Very creative too. Also love the bloopers at the end, I always look forward to the bloopers :)
Thank you!! I try to add them when I can!
Love how jj just casually walks in 😂😭intrudor
This should get more recognized
At first, in the very beginning it looked like the square she was sitting in was the size of a good hamster cage….LOL
Thanks for giving out advice to beginners and others to.
You got a lovely home Victoria
Thank you!
im so glad i got a huge enclosure for my hamster! it’s the niteangel bigger world cage with many other niteangel products such as the wheel, platform, tunnel and more! my syrian hamster, ruby is thriving because of u! u made these videos that educate people on proper hamster care and i love that. ty victoria raechel!
8:13 did anyone notice that JJ was sitting peacefully on the toilet?? 😂
Victoria: there’s an annoying cat outside.
Cat: glares angrily
Thanks to the person who send you this idea! It's a really great way to educated people. I don't own a hamster but I've been binge watching for a couple of days and if I ever have one, I'm going to apply everything you say hihi
