I would pick these up but I sure would like to see a controller like they had on the Mega with a trackball, spinner & a numpad to go along with my GSP. Jon, I enjoy your videos. They have helped me tremendously. You’re the man.
Thanks for watching! 😀
Awesome!!! Great to see prototypes, I would like to see A, B, C, and D buttons for the supported systems that have four button controls, also at least two shoulder buttons on the gamepad, and maybe a controller for the GSP with a trackball.
It's good to see My Arcade ramping up products now in back to back years and not only that, they are listening to what the consumer is wanting. I have seen people already complaining about these joysticks and game pad, just like some of their past offerings, the final product may vary. It is good to know that these are backwards compatible for those that just bought the original GSP. For me personally, I did not get the GSP, only because I have five other ways to play Atari games, and others like Sega, Sony, NES and SNES games. However, I think this upcoming GSP 2 I will seriously consider purchasing with these controller options that they will now come with. I also suspect once the games list comes out, we may see more actual Atari titles and maybe other officially licensed games? I used to love E3 for what it was, but it seems the CES may be a great new option for people to want to attend.
I'm happy with the Atari Gamestation Pro as it is currently but it is cool to see they're coming out with more options for controllers.
I use a wireless 8bitDo Turbografx16 controller (with a usbc male to usbA female adapter) and all the buttons are working. You still need the main controller to save / load the game. Both controller can be active at the same time.
I think the other controller might need a numerical keypad for like playing Star Raiders.
On the joystick, keep the A button where it is, move the B button to the RIGHT of it, and move the C button to where the B button is, beneath A. That, to me, would be ideal.
My thought exactly. Except I wasn't sure if B and C should be reversed from what you said who knows.
Yes
They could just make it possible to plug in any USB keypad, that would be great and allow more customization.
I am definitely interested in these controllers for my GSP. A suggestion for the stick controller would be to move the C button to a bumper above the A button. For the control pad controller I would love to see a trackball and a 4th button (A,B,X,Y - SNES Style), that would be perfect.
I resonate with this, i feel having a shoulder C button might but a good idea. Just adjust A and B accordingly.
I'm loving the coverage so far John keep up the good work 👍💯
I’m an old Gen X’er (born in ‘68) so I grew up with the classic Atari joystick when gaming, therefore I prefer the first model you showed! I never could get used to D-pad controllers later, even going so far as to buy a fancy arcade style joystick for my Sega Genesis in the early 90’s. That being said I’ll probably wind up buying both styles of these new GSP controllers especially if they are just $25 or so.
They could actually add a screw in joystick on top of the thumb pad, infact it wouldn't be too hard to make one. Switch between thumb control or stick. Just a thought.
I'm millennial myself and a couple of my friends definitely struggle with the big joystick instead of the modern design we grew up with. Great price too!
I hope they add a fourth button, so many more ROMs would become playable if there were even one more button. But all I really hope for is a software update to allow custom button mapping!
It'd be nice if they could make it so you could flip a switch and then turn the gamepad 180 degrees for right handed people to have some fun. This is the way the Hyperkin Ranger gamepad works.
Hallelujah! My only gripe with my GSP is the current controller buttons. Adding a gamepad is the cherry on top. Much appreciated that you are getting this info out so quickly. Thanks Jon .
If they bring them to market in a good quality unit, I expect to buy at least one of each, maybe two, so I would have options on different games and have a selection of controllers for guests as well. Love the looks of them personally.
Wow. So nice!!! Just what I wanted see. Thanks, Jon.
Sweet! The button locations on the gamepad look similar to a Genesis controller
Loving these new products and thanks for the awesome coverage,I think the gamestation pro joystick would benefit having rubber feet underneath and it could be a little shorter and straight like the original Atari joysticks
I agree with more (configurable?) buttons on the controller for greater compatibility with other platform games - Atari 5200, NES, SNES, etc. (I was able to load and run SNES games, but needed more buttons!) However, can they consider making the rechargeable batteries easily replaceable? Perhaps a standard size rechargeable battery, even AA size, with ability to recharge while in the controller.
Another item to consider-make the controller with a D-Pad that has a detachable joystick, maybe with a D-Pad cover piece for when the joystick isn't being used.
Very cool, I'd pick up both of them. Thanks for the info.
Very promising to see them adding more connection options.
I will pick those up for sure. Thanks for the coverage, thats pretty awesome!
You bet!
Please please talk to them about mapping the left and right on the paddle natively for rom's, it'd be a game changer
GREAT COVERAGE! Ok so if you talk more with Atari Pro station people I would love to see a proper spinner for tempest - It should spin freely (and quickly - without a stop far left or far right). Also a Joystick that is directional, games like Zoo Keeper (arcade) dont work well with this controller. Money is no concern of mine but would suggest keeping it inline with other high end controllers. OR ..... Perhaps this was covered somewhere if another company has a all in one controller (think mame) that has dual joysticks for games like robotron, A proper spinner (tempest) and six buttons (fighting games). Thanks and again keep up the great work! :D
I would love a trackball on the pad.
Very nice. Thank you for filming, boss. Have a good night. 🕹️
Thanks, you too!
Just got one of these systems and I really love it. The joystick isn’t bad but I do really like the paddle. I wish My Arcade would come out with maybe a throwback paddle controller set and maybe a more conventional joystick set as options to play with. I would totally gobble them up.
Will definitely get the gamepad
Great update Jon. Wondering if the "C" button on the joystick would be better placed adjacent to the "A" Button? Just a thought :-) Keep up the awesome work!
I know that My Arcade often reads these comments looking for ideas so they should see this.
I would love to have the gamepad controller. It would make gaming easier.
Joystick im sold on for sure, the other pad i feel needs some adjusting in ways; just looks a bit peculiar with the design of the d-pad and the layout of the ABC buttons. Perhaps a different styled D-Pad ( perhaps some black accents on the red even? ) and maybe some slight adjustments to the buttons might convince me on it, can't tell how it feels to play with, though from a purely visual stand point is a pass for me at this time.
Looks good
Woawww thanks Again for the follow up , 25 $ / each and compatible with the old GSP ! Yes thanks for great info and can’t wait to buy the new controller ( pocket player screenless ) !!!!
I think the Gamepad looks a little small. I'd imagine it would be uncomfortable to use for extended periods if you have larger hands. The positioning of the C button on the joystick looks a little uncomfortable too. Maybe move it up, next to 'A'? Other than that, looks great.
The new Joystick buttons should be in the triangle format. A that the corner then B & C to the right and lower. better configuration.
I'm just about happy enough with the GSP joystick for now although I've only really played games that require one button so far. Had the 2600 as a kid so am fmiliar with the old style joysticks but it's not the most comfortable to use. Was considering using some sort of alternative gamepad controller for more complex games although I haven't done that yet. That new gamepad controller doesn't look too comfortable to hold, would have expected something more akin to the controller that came with the Atari VCS console that came out a few years back (not the stick controller, the gamepad). More buttons and more ergonomic (at least it looks that way!). Let's hope My Arcade continue to listen to fan feedback!
Oh! Nice t-shirt!
Awesome
With the numpad on the portable one, we need an option on the GSP
👍🏼
my hopes are dashed. So very much wanted a spinner for Tempest, not a paddle controller. Still, a bit better than the last controller
That’s a good idea. With a spinner I could turn the controller to the right 90 degrees so the knob would be useable by my right hand. Also, that would let us play games like Indy 500. Problem, if it’s running Stella, I don’t think Stella supports the driving (spinner) controller yet.
The Neo Geo handheld had that micro switch dpad. All handhelds should too!!
I plan on picking these up. I definitely agree w you that they should probably put a cross on that D-pad. Honestly just straight up steal the Genesis or Saturn D-Pad build(but w a slight cosmetic change to it to avoid a lawsuit lol).
I love that new joystick, and especially the joypad controller. The only thing that I dislike about the original GSPro joystick is that the C button is on the stick. Very awkward. I will certainly be picking me up at least one of each when they become available. Yes, I did get myself one of those Atari GSP’s. It is AWESOME! Love the capabilities of the SD card slot.
The revised joystick should have the buttons laid out as A and B side by side, and C right below A (where B is now). Aside from that I like what I see - and I'm someone who does not mind the existing GSP button layout. Granted, I'm not running stuff that needs more than two buttons on it.
The gamepad looks WAY too small for my tastes, but I'll be sticking to the joysticks in any case.
I picked up a GSP based mostly on your reviews. I already updated it to 1.30c (community) and put a bunch of my favs on it and generally just enjoying it.
Those news controllers will be great, especially for arcade Missile Command!
I would like them to make a stick with a little more throw, and a bigger spinner (I know there are aftermarket options).
I would love a 5200 style stick. When I play 5200 games (and 7800 for that matter) I expect that doorstop feel. 🤣
Especially with a corrected stick, that's also a spinner, and a proper rubber button keypad which, let's face it GSP NEEDS!
The gamepad will be great for NES/Sega roms. I think the spinner on the left is a bit weird though (and this is from a lefty).
I like how they are evolving, and I hope it continues. I do suspect they'll release a keypad down the road, I would hope they consider bit on a 5200 style controller.
Maybe a trackball or full paddle ? But I won't hold my breath on those.
EDIT: thinking about it more after playing a bunch of games last couple days I want to add that I hope they don't ditch the standard stick app together and make a rechargeable one.
Reason: When they eventually release button mapping, the current stick with it's C button trigger would make an excellent flying game stick (like Zaxxon, Star Wars, Afterburner or Space Harrier).
Even better: make the stick AND paddle function at the same time so we can play Tron!
And speaking of Star Wars, my wish for a 5200 style stick has moved further up my list because Star Wars is impossible to play.
Great report, thanks...I'll likely pick up one or both of these for my GSP. Question: after handling the game pad, do you think it would be usable sitting on a tabletop surface, to offer something slightly closer to arcade game feel than adapting a joystick? One example would be for Joust. In the arcade you can flap a whole lot faster tapping on a countertop button with fingers than you can with your thumb on a joystick, maybe the game pad would offer something close. Maybe the same sort of potential for asteroids- maybe the three buttons in a row would more closely emulate the feel of the arcade game than using the stick for thrust and hyperspace as well as direction. In both cases you'd have to adapt left hand actions to the new thumb pad, of course, so it wouldn't be perfect. Thanks again for the quick tour.
The new controller is much better than the one included with the Gamestation Pro. I might get one as soon as it's available!
I’d like to see the remote that it released with, re-released as a rechargeable unit with suction cups on the bottom!!!
Nice! Keep up the great work with these updates, much appreciated. Wondering if 'thumb on top' play is possible, looks longer than a CX-40. I haven't bought the GSP yet. Did they hint if the new joystick will be included in their base unit packaging going forward? Updating firmware is no big deal, but it would be nice to get the new joystick and the latest firmware right off the bat.
The new model of the GSP ("Gamestation Pro Remix") will now include one each of these new controllers in place of original ones.
Wasn't aware, thanks! @@GenXGrownUp
At the moment, the only way to get a controller with a paddle/spinner, track ball, 8-way microswitch D-Pad and joystick (screw in), is to make it yourself, no one sells one yet, I mean one that you can use as a normal in hands gamepad.
This would be amazing for using with MAME, RetroArch, MiSTer, RetroPie, RecallBox, Batorcera, Pandora, Amiga 500 Mini, CoinOPS, etcetera.
Thanks for the video 👍. I would definitely be interested in buying both of these if they add a fourth button (A,B,X,Y) 😊
My Arcade sound like great folks.
This is how the layout of the joystick should have been like for last year's release. Really like the joypad.
Ish. just. Got. REAL!!! D pad controller FTW for emulation!!!
I probably won't get the new joystick except as a replacement, but I am definitely interested in the game pad. I have yet to see how long the AAA's last in the joysticks I have though, so I may yet change my mind on the joystick.
The new joystick definitely needs the A, B, C buttons organized better than that, C is the biggest problem there. The gamepad might as well get the traditional extra buttons (ABXY, L and R... or a six-button layout) to improve game compatibility. If they do that, I might even buy it. A tiny trackball would also be a nice touch, seeing that they have already designed such a thing.
Side note, the paddle controls for arcade Warlords were not programmed correctly on the GSP itself, making the game very difficult to control with the included controller.
You didn't say it, but I hope you are still a gen x grownup.
Oh, yes. I am! 😘
I prefer the disks over the plus on the thumb pad. 8 way is better than 4 way but that's just preference.
Nice to see these options. Curious that on the gamepad the the paddle is on the left. Would love to hear the rationale for this. Being a righty, I'm biased to that side. That said, in a perfect world the user would be able to flip it 'upside-down' so the paddle knob is on the bottom right and have it recognized by the system. Get on it engineers!!
The A-B-C buttons have a 3 button Genesis controller vibe
doing The Supreme One's work as always Jon, big thanks for this ... does the joystick "feel" the same as the one we have or is it any tighter? also, I assume it will cycle through the rainbow then white then orange like the first model?
Feels about the same to me, but in fairness, I did not do a side-by-side comparison.
@@GenXGrownUp no worries man, much appreciated
@@GenXGrownUp it's all good, thanks very much for the due diligence... let 'em know this will be a Day One purchase from me!
I like the pad, be nice if the spinner was in the centre
Thank you for inquiring and providing the answer on the question of backwards compatibility for the new controllers!! Do they also provide a wired connection option on the new controllers? That helps combat latency from the wireless connection. I'm a little concerned about the placement of the 'C' button on the joystick controller especially if having to move between 'A', 'B', and 'C' throughout a game. If the 'C' is supposed to be like a trigger function, perhaps leave that as a trigger on the new joystick and have just 'A' and 'B'. Another cool option would be to have the stick be able to spin freely to be used as a spinner for a game like Tempest. This would provide an all in one option housing of a joystick, paddle, trigger, and firing buttons. Just an idea, but it would be pretty cool if My Arcade could make the modifications!! Thanks again for allowing us to provide input to My Arcade through you.
Still can be hard-wired - you bet!
Would love to see them add a removable thumbstick to the D-pad similar to the AtarI Euro gamepad.
Nice controllers - love having more options - and if they can price them at $25, that's a win. One thing I'd love to see would be a trackball controller.
I don't expect the trackball will be retrofitted for the GSP - that's a feature for this year's new products.
Disappointing news. @@GenXGrownUp
I've wanted a GSP since I saw your videos on it for the first time a few months ago (I think a few months). But the price is quite high, in Canada it's $140 CAD. I do still like the idea of getting one but I'd almost rather have a unique desk piece like the micro players (or larger).
I wa born in the 90's so I really just want these MyArcade devices to play paddle/spinner controlled games, and enjoy some of the classics that are already available.
I'd think they should put the B & C buttons on the joystick controller in between the A button and the Dial. Myself, I always control the joystick with my left hand, so I'd think using my right hand to press B & C on the left side as shown in the video would be awkward. Also, adding an X, Y, and Z on the joypad controller for Genesis games would be awesome!
Since they're modeling the controller look and configuration to a sega Genesis they should go with the Sega Genesis controller dpad.
Ideally yes, though such things are often limited by patents, meaning certain companies have locked down certain methods of gamepad control and can't legally be "copied". If you've got 6 minutes there's a great video by the Game Historian about it: czcams.com/video/CnmMDzgTB7o/video.html
Hi Jon. You look happily tired with all the activity and excitement. I wish I was there!
With the Gamestation Pro controller I'd like to see it about 20% bigger. I could see you struggling with the small size.
As for the A B C buttons, I'd like to see the B and C buttons being further from the left hand edge and slightly higher. These changes would make thumb movement much faster and easier. In this case, ergonomics are much more important than trying to keep them in a straight line.
It's really interesting to note that the Gamepad has already done a similar thing with its buttons but they still want to keep the buttons in a straight line, whereas I think that its A button could be a bit closer to the right edge.
The paddle control on the left side seems awkward to me. Not sure what it would be like playing paddle games left handed. I wonder if it would be possible to place the paddle control on the right side of the gamepad like it is on the joystick
My same thought.
As a left hander, I wish on the joystick there was a version with the paddle on the left and ABC on the right.
I wish these were compatible with the modern Atari VCS in addition to the GSP. They would be a must have accessory.
Bellissimi quando saranno disponibili su Amazon italia?
The only change that I would really like would be being Li Ion rechargeable batteries for the controllers
He mentioned they are rechargeable!
@@tornadotj2059 as long as they aren't NIMH. Because that would be a definite no from me. FULL STOP.
Did they give a rough idea of when its due out? Does the boxed console with the new controllers have a new system in it? Pro 2 perhaps.
No dates have been given yet. If we go by last year's CES, maybe Q4.
I find the bottom edge of the GSP controller to be a little sharp. It would be great if they'd smooth out the edges a little.
#sandpaper 😜
(Seriously, it is a bit sharp, now that you mention it.)
I would refer more buttons and programmable controller/gamepad. The 8bitdo Lite SE and 8Bitdo Lite 2 Bluetooth Gamepad are good example layout. I am willing to pay more for better design layout and support more platform. The A,B,C buttons may be limit use.
That d-pad looks like a pretty odd location to me. Ideally the d-pad should be the same distance from the center of the controller and the vertical center aligned with the buttons for better comfort. The paddle could easily be relocated to the middle of the controller and leave room for the D-pad to be at a more convenient spot
space invaders extreme would be perfect for the new paddle controller. Any chance more modern, compatible games like that could be made available/ported?
🤔
🤩Gamepad Bluetooth Type C
The spinner needs to be able to recess into controller...like a push button.
That would be cool
Not a fan of built in rechargeables. I rather be able to use standard rechargeable batteries and pop in a fresh set when I need to that have to go wired whenever the controller gets hungry or stops wanting to recharge. AKA the playstation dual shock syndrome.
I agree. Once they don’t charge anymore, only option is to plug them in
Do you know if they will work with PC's? And does the spinner work with any game or just select ones?
Still to be determined. I wouldn't count on it, but I'd be happily surprised.
they need to just come out with a tried and true xbox controller type clone that everyone is familiar with instead of some funky designs that honestly I'm not sure is going to work.
Both joystick looks great, I really the fact that they are rechargeable now, for the console is there any difference with the 2023 Gamestation Pro ?
Just a new visual design. The console otherwise is the same.
@@GenXGrownUp it's more for the new joystick that I will be waiting, I want to buy the new bunble with the new joystick
Of they release a game pad for GSP, I will buy a couple FOR SURE.
Concerning the new stick, I'm fine with the old stick tbh (I know I'm in a minority there) but will probably grab a new one anyways. That said, I think the A, B, and C button all on the base of the controller, will be better. I also think that one button below the A and one beside the A (like an L shape) might make for an even reach instead of how they show the C button so far away from the A button in the prototype. If your thumb is doing all of the work, it would be a long reach between A and C (imo).
Anyways, I'm totally on the market for the gamepad. There are lots of games I don't play on my GSP at the moment because I'm waiting for the right gamepad solution. If My Arcade is going to produce one, my problems are solved.
Why not put the A,B,C buttons in a upside down pyramid pattern? It would make more sense.😮
Will the Atari super and mega player have the same games as the game station pro?
Too early to say as the software for those models is not yet finalized.
that game pad is going to make playing Genesis and NES roms a lot better.
I wonder if u can order the controller and joystick seperate?
You will be able to, yes. Estimated $24.99 MSRP.
I’d love a more 5200 style stick. Everyone bitches about it, but to me, if the build quality were better, it’s definitely top 5 controllers. No one can convince it it’s worse than the N64 which came out 15 years later.
Why can't they make a controller that also has a track ball ?????
They can.
@@GenXGrownUp But will they ?
I definitely want the controller. I'll be easier to play games I side loaded on the SD card " nes etc ..
For the gamepad, I agree a + is better than the circle for control. Also, just based on controller designs, a diamond configuration for the buttons like on the SNES, Playstation, Switch, XBox, etc. makes more sense even with just 3 buttons. They'd benefit from arranging them so that B and C are both next to A. Same for the joystick. Instead of having the buttons in a row, put one button to the right of A and a button below A so they're closer together. For the joypad, keep them on an angle like the SNES controller. Heck, even put 4 buttons and duplicate one or make them configurable. The A / B / C in a line like on the Genesis controllers was an evolutionary dead end.
So my question is more towards the GameStation Portable, will these controllers work with that? 🤞
Different number of buttons and input, so even if they are compatible, they will be missing something.
I like both, in particular dig the gamepad. It's too bad that the original controller didn't come that way.
The paddle knob on the pad controller is on the wrong side for right-handed players. I can’t imagine playing Warlords or Kaboom with my left hand.
Hold it upside down. 😉
@@GenXGrownUp if it is a spinner yes that will work. If it is like the OG paddle controller, you can’t because it has a stop. I don’t have a GSP yet so I don’t know how they operate. I am a long-time Atari owner and fan, even ran a business on an ST, Stacy, and TT/030. I have more 2600s, 5200s, 7800s, etc. than I can count, and probably 400-500 carts for all of them. Now an owner of a 2600+, working with Plaion on AA, hopefully the compatibility will continue to improve, playing with OG controllers makes a huge difference for paddle games. 😁
When are they going to come out with a track ball that is much needed!!??
The trackball was a feature on the new products coming out later in the year. Not for the GSP.
@GenXGrownUp they need a trackball controller for games like Tempest and Missile Command!!!
Also where can I get these new controllers I'm not going to have to buy a whole new system again am I?
So where can I find a trackball controller for my game station pro?
I wonder if these can be used on a PC. I really want a paddle/spinner and $25 is really cheap for something with a paddle/spinner.
Just want to give a mention to the difference between paddles (which have hard stops on the left and right because they are potentiometers aka POTs) and spinners (which spin infinitely in either direction because they are optical encoder discs). The ones on these controls are paddles, which are actually a bit harder to find these days than spinners - however I don't believe anyone has gotten the paddle portion to work on PCs.
So it's still a guessing game which ROMs will work with each controller...
For SD-card games, yes. For now.
Maybe these controllers will be included with the Atari Gamestation Pro V2?
Yes.
