DualShock 2 Buttons Not Working? | This is how to fix them

- In this video I look at a bunch of DualShock 2 controllers. Normally when the buttons don't respond it's because the original membrane has developed a fault. But as you'll see in the video, that's not always the case. The part no. for the membrane is SA1Q43-A avilable from AliEpress.

Great video Phil, always a pleasure to watch. When I work on controllers I tend to go from nice and relaxed to an angry wire wrenching plastic twisting monster very quicly. lol.
I can relate to that. There's a tub full of Xbox one controllers for me to look at too, but I keep putting it off lol.
There is something with the model H plastic pcb that causes it to go faulty way more frequently than the other models. I bought a batch of 9 faulty controllers 2 were model A and just required a general cleaning, the rest were model H and all had the wrong resistances on plastic board itself. I guess it just degrades ever so slightly over time and that changes the resistance to a degree where the controller will either think it's always pressed or doesn't recognize it at all. When buying new boards that also seems to be the problem, the manufacturer has a hard time getting the exact required resistance there. So if you're buying new boards for that model you might as well order twice as many as you'll use because chances are at least half of them will be faulty.
All of that just to get press sensitive buttons, a function that no game ever used :p
Loved the intro. Your dual shock, dual shock true........If your controller has gone funny. 🤣
I hate doing the intros, and normally edit all muy mistakes out. This is thought, sod it, I can't be bothered and left it in lol. At least it made someone laugh haha
Hi @PhilipBryden , i have silver controler with the same error that you've got but my cable got only 8 pins and all 8 cables are connected to board. Analog led is on but controller don't response:/ What i sholud check next?
Great video as always 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you Froz. As always, it's good to see you.
How do I fix the membrane since the Dualshock 1 parts are nearly irreplaceable.
I cant unscrew couple of screws. Would spraying wd into the hole help to loosen it up?
Are the screws tight or rounded? WD might help if they are tight. If they are rounded try different sizes of small flat heads.
hello do you have a link to replacement ribbon connector?
Search AliExpress for SA1Q43-A , there's plenty of sellers selling the membrane and the connectors
Could you share the software you are using at the beginning to test them?
If you go to the search bar on your taskbar and type in USB, you should see an option to 'set up USB game controllers'
Hi, Im from Brazil and my english is not good, i have 2 controls that red light turn on but it doenst work anything included the 2 anolog sticks. What i could understand seeing your video is that the problem occurs because of menbrane, in my thinking the membrane just interfere and controls the buttos and DPAD, not the analog, so u could confirm to me if thats broken membrane could stop all controller of functioning. I have tested all cables and the voltage goes normal to the central chip. Thanks a lot !!
A faulty membrane does not affect the sticks. There must be another fault if the sticks are not working.
@@PhilipBryden Thanks a Lot, this was my Doubt. Só i think It could be.the chip. Thanks !!
@@norbertomianijunior2738 Are you testing on a console or PC? Could the console be faulty?
@@PhilipBryden I tested on PC. Very soon i Will buy a PS2 for final test. I think It could be the PS2 adaptador. But my other controller séries A Works perfect
Hi, do you use an adapter to go from the ps2 connector to usb when connecting to the pc?
Yes I do. Look for USB 2.0 Games Controller Adapter Converter Cable, Compatible with PS1 PS2 Dual shock 2
@@PhilipBryden Thank you mate. I've got a few to try and fix myself, will be a fun challenge.
@@karleetoss1713 let me know how you get on. If I can help I will. Good luck.
What is the liquid you used at 6:35 called?
For cleaning the circuit board use IPA. Try and get a 99% one
@@PhilipBryden thank you! Great video.
@@joaobarrozinho1602 Thank you, I hope it helps. I've got half a dozen of these to fix up myself.
We may have to get you some gloves to protect you from some of those nasties inside!🤢😂
