    Personally I love the small format, must be easier to navigate than most of the Volcas and look how popular they are!
    It makes me laugh to think how many people slate the small format whilst typing their thoughts on a smart phone keyboard :-)

      Wowsers. The Volca's are a simplified scaled down synth. There's a huge difference between the on-board controls on a Volca and this thing. I hate the tiny size. It's awful. No one would ask for a synth this tiny and if they did then Roland probably shouldn't be listening to them. Also, because people use a phone to text they should be asked to control every parameter of a full synth with tiny knobs they can't see? I don't follow. Using a tiny phone (that should be as tiny as possible to fit in a pocket) is not the same as the SE-02 which is a full synth. The Boutique size is awful.

      lol, its not like Japanese are a midget race. I know a couple Japanese people that are 6 feet +. Any tie between it being Japanese and it's size is much more likely to do with the average Japanese apartment being small, making gear real estate a precious commodity.

    Nick Batt is the final word as far as I'm concerned with equipment reviews. He speaks about the features and benefits but does address short comings. He took the time to explain it in brief and then played some of the Presets. This is a much better demo than anything else I watched and heard. If you can deal with the small controls on this unit, its worth buying. I like the sound. It has balls!

    Despite my intimidating 6'3" stature and euro/western-sized man hands and fingers, I've had no problem making music with the SE-02 for the past two weeks. I've even "hunched" over it in the studio for an entire day, and still somehow managed to eke out beautiful tones with precision. Guess I'm simply exceptional -- except I'm not, and this hobbit/midget/small-Japanese stuff is bull, likely from people still waiting for a certain knockoff synth that doesn't have half these features.

    Fooking amazing sounding! What a time we live in. It wasn't long ago everyone was excited about the Mopho module. This thing is light hears ahead of that. I know its small, and no VCA velocity is a bummer, but damn. And it comes with fx?

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube Před 6 lety

      I have a Mopho Desktop (module) and I think it's excellent. The modulation possibilities are a LOT more sophisticated than on the SE-02.
      For example, I can map velocity, MOD, and any CC I chose to control three different envelopes - VCA, filter and a third, assignable one, and/or other things like LFO amounts.
      It's the only digitally controlled analog synth I'm aware of that has that degree of sophistication - certainly, in my price bracket. It has space for 384 patches too... and a built in sequencer.
      I wouldn't part with my Mopho. It doesn't mean I'm not interested in getting another synth though. I'm attracted to the more hands-on, knobby nature of synths like the Roland SE-02, Behringer Model D, Korg Minilogue... the MFB Dominion Club has now been added to my list, thanks to the comments here too :)
      I can make my Mopho more knobby with a better MIDI controller, of course. There are quite a lot of knobs that can be added though. The same goes for the SE-02, and the MFB Dominion Club.

    I think SE may have been around for close to 30 years, first remember seeing a MidiMoog circa 1990. This sounds great, and looks a bit like the original MidiMoogs. Please keep an ear out for stepping in the full review, there's one demo on here (a comparison with the Monologue) where the stepping sounded pretty bad when the resonance control was swept.

  • @Screaming-Trees
    @Screaming-Trees Před 6 lety +3

    It seems to be capable of some nice sounds but saying that it also seems to lean towards the clangy on a lot of sounds. It seems every time you turn a knob it tends to give you this clangorous tone. Or at least it goes in that territory pretty quickly. Good example of what I'm talking about is when Nick starts tweaking the basic bass patch (around 12:05). I like the basic patch and I like it when he adds the second oscillator slightly detuned but going further immediately goes into that clangy territory.

  • @sohatyi
    @sohatyi Před 6 lety +1

    Does it have a knob latch mode? When you moved the XMOD knob around the 8 minute mark, the jump was really jarring, a latch mode would really help with that. I guess that's one thing they could add with firmware updates.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube Před 6 lety

      They use digital pots. I.e. the actual control is a chip that behaves like a potentiometer, but is controlled digitally - the CPU sends a binary control word to each digi-pot when you turn a knob, or when you recall a preset.
      It's like fly by wire - or, more worryingly, drive by wire - you don't actually have the joystick or steering wheel in your hand, you have an interface to a computer that does the actual steering. Only, in this case, it's only a synthesizer, so you're relatively safe when it goes wrong (there's always the small chance of a sonic attack / sound that could kill someone scenario, I guess).
      My Dave Smith Industries Mopho Desktop works the same way, except it doesn't have nearly as many knobs, so it mostly has to be programmed from an editor running on a computer - or from a really elaborate MIDI controller.

    Ive never wanted Mono-synth but jeez I'm tempted but this one. I like the model d but the lack of memories is a deal breaker. I'm surprised so much negativity is made of the form factor of this ( I don't mind it at all but like many people I have very limited space). it sounds very, very good, its well made and its affordable....not sure why anything else matters if you're after a mono?

    • @SPAZZOID100

      Not to you maybe, are to me!

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube Před 6 lety

      +Pizza Gogo, FWIW, if you can MIDI control every parameter of a synth, there's a way to save patches yourself - it's not a convenient way though :) I'm not sure if that applies to the Behringer D.
      I can do it with my Volca Keys, all except for the Resonance knob, which doesn't have a MIDI controller - it's just a physical pot in the feedback path of the filter, so I have to note the position by hand (using the "o'clock" system that guitarists favour). There are 14 or 15 other values (I forget the exact number, off hand) that I can send from a MIDI controller, so I can also write down the values.
      On my Korg MicroKontrol 37 MIDI controller, I can see the values on the built in displays - either as I set them, or by turning the knob by one click, then back again. On any other controller, I could route it via my PC (usually with a USB-MIDI interface) through MIDI-OX, which shows a stream of CC values as you turn a knob. Same principle - turn the knob one click, if you need to, or if it's a pot without clicks, turn it just enough to register a change, by sending a value through MIDI-OX.
      MIDI-OX takes a bit of getting used to, but it works well and it's free.
      You may slightly alter the values in changing them, but it's usually close enough. You can put a patch back in, close enough, then fiddle with the knobs until you're happy.
      You have to write it all down, of course. I've used a spreadsheet, but a notebook and pen works too, and I guess feels a lot more authentic :)

    Ordered last week. The patch memory and Studio Electronics pedigree easily won out over the larger knobs of the Behringer D. Plus I'm still smarting from a negative GC experience with the DM12. Thanks for the preview.

      @marike1100 Před 6 lety +10

      The number of voices available in a given synth has no bearing on the usefulness of patch memory. I use analog synths in my project studio, the job of recreating patches is huge time waster and workflow killer.

      I came to the same conclusion. I just got mine from musicians friend and have zero buyers remorse. This synth sounds amazing. You're basically getting a studio electronics synth for $499. If you don't like the tiny knobs you can map the whole synth to a midi controller.

    • @wingoshack
      @wingoshack Před 6 lety +3

      Actually the sequencer is only 16 steps, which is kind of nuts, but you can string them together in the "song mode". But there is parameter per step which is pretty killer.

    Around 3:50, Nick mentions that some 'modern analogue synths' don't have the problem with the bottom-end disappearing when you increase resonance. I'm in the market for a decent analogue synth, and that short-coming feels like something I'd like to avoid in whatever I buy (though not a complete deal-breaker).
    Which synths was he talking about (which compensate)?

    • @Heathcliff_hensel
      @Heathcliff_hensel Před 6 lety +1

      Im pretty sure the synths with ladder filters have compensation. If you don't like a filter on a particular synth you can always get a dedicated filter module like Waldorf 2-pole ,Sherman filter bank. I don't know if you are into modular but thats like filter heaven.

    • @elissitdesign
      @elissitdesign Před 6 lety +2

      Several of these modern synths at this level have either a Boost button or a knob to gain the low-end shelf. Sorry but I don't have a list with the synths but a little time on the inter-tubes and you'll have a few in mind.

    • @akastewart
      @akastewart Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for responding, both.
      Heathcliff… I'll take a look at synths with ladder filters. I'm pretty new on synthesis and, while I love those long meandering soundscapes on channels like seb17320, modular seems a little hardcore to me right now. I was considering grabbing a Mother 32 though to dip my toe in the modular waters (though that reportedly suffers quite badly from the low-end drop-off issues). (I'll likely grab a Minitaur, which reportedly suffers less, being more low-end oriented.) Thanks.
      Eric… I previously did a quick look based on Nick's use of the phrase 'gain compensation', but that search only threw up vintage results like OBX. I'll try again with some of the terms you've used. Thanks.

      That's ur opinion, not mine. That's a stupid comment for you to make, as if ur needs are all that matter. There are more than enough Model D's out there without patch storage if that is what you want. Your needs, and my needs and needs of others are different. Just because you say "it doesn't need patch storage" does not mean that some of us do not need a Model D with patch storage. When I create a patch, I want to save it instead of wasting time trying to recreate it again. And if your argument that a model d is meant to explore by turning knobs then maybe you are a knob tweaker, probably not someone who actually plays, I don't know, I am baffled by your reasoning. I need instant recall of my patches. I am not into tweaking knobs all day long, I am into playing music and I like the sound of the Model D. Not sure if that makes sense to you, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Tuning is all over the place and I haven't even touched the LFO. Very unpredictable. I've tinkered with a few analog-style synths and have a basic idea of what I'm doing but this thing made me feel like a complete idiot thinking I was missing something. Firmware update made it even worse. Tried it with 2 different controllers and same results. It's going back to the store...Stick with my S1 tweak, far superior device for less than half the cost.

I think nobody expects ads within ads. It is kind of counterproductive here, at least for me. • @keithfisher7333
      @keithfisher7333 Před 6 lety

      ADS with release switch is from minimoog from which Studio Electronics "has experience with"???? Answer question??? This thing would be adding seq and patch memory to model D from Behringer kind of??? A very Moog inspired synth.... The patch memory will come at the cost of audio purity though...The D may sound better in some ways....Any continuous controller has to be voltage controlled to be saved and recalled...For instance, in the mixer, it will require VCAs rather than plain old potentiometers... VCAs in the rest of the pro audio world are a sin... They are not pure audio amplifiers...Since mini clone would only have one...It will probably have "that sound". You won't noticed the difference in the bass, it's in the brightness and transparency.... A vintage minimoog has octaves more treble response than a voyager...The voyager sounds dull.... The loss of treble is related to the poor THD and phase distortion of VCAs... As distortion occurs, the phase alignment that keeps the structure of the highest harmonics in tact is compromised and you get dull smeared sounding, doodoo!!!

    • @wingoshack
      @wingoshack Před 6 lety

      Cool.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube Před 6 lety

      Keith Fisher,
      Google digi-pot / digipot or digital potentiometer. That's how this sort of thing is normally done.
      The ones I've briefly played with have 257 steps (oddly - they have a 9 bit interface, but so far only 257 values... one more than an 8 bit one could have). It's possible to use one as a master and one as a fine tune, to give more precision, but 257 steps is not a bad start.
      As for the bass loss, increasing resonance increases the Q of the filter - which means how tight it is around the centre frequency. Some filters are designed to be more or less flat below the peaked part, but some (Minimoog and presumably this one) are more of a bell shaped curve around a centre frequency (set by the Cut Off knob), so you get gain at the "cut off" frequency, attenuation above it, but also some attenuation below. If you made a purely passive filter, with capacitors and inductors, that's what you'd get.
      If they were aiming for a faithful clone of a Minimoog, with some enhancements, it's going to have inherited some of the same quirks.

    • @keithfisher7333
      @keithfisher7333 Před 6 lety

      TooSlowTube
      I know all about digital pots....They typically have no better than 90db signal to noise ratios.... A consumery product for consumer usage. VCA'S will have better S/N ratios but phase distortion....
      In this case....I hear a VCA in usage.... I hear phase smear in the Roland as well as Phattys and Voyagers.... There is a lack of intensity to the sound, or like it is smothered. There is no other probable cause to me... I have no idea on the Roland yet, but with the need to modulate as required for wave modulation and continuously variable waveforms on the Moog, I would suspect VCAs... 256 steps is only a slight improvement upon midi's 7 bit 128 step.... My Korg Monologue has 10 bit parameters which have zero stepping at 1024 steps....A VCA has a continuous DC input and therefore is only limited to the bit depth of digital CV it is sent.... In a true mixer, this resolution is not critical as a mixer is not usually a mod destination.. If the waveshape/mixer are combined into a single circuit which is what likely happens on the Moogs, then high resolution would be needed. And I personally think the Mother 32 and Minitaur sound more faithful to the old Moog stuff than the Phattys and Voyager.... The M32 and Minitaur do not feature this type of wave mod/shaping... A switch and a Saw or Square.
      I am not saying digital pots aren't used....and I am not saying that VCAs aren't sometimes a necessary evil.... I am saying, the more junk you put into the signal path...The more tone you are robbed of.

      @TooSlowTube Před 6 lety

      Agreed, Heathcliff. The mini B USB socket is plenty small enough, and a lot more robust than the micro sort. I expect phone manufacturers love them because it's another reason for a phone to need replacing with a newer one.
      As Mox Coz said, I've had problems with full sized B sockets too. There's a Woody Piano Shack video where he shows one that had been broken away from the board, on an Arturia Keylab (or some such).
      I've had them break internally too, on Arduino clones. I think the plug just gets to have too much leverage, and most sockets are only surface mount soldered onto the PCB, so it's quite easy to break one off.
