I'M A 79 YEAR OLD WOMMAN A CITY GIRL BUT WATCHING YOU I ENJOY SO MUCH TO SEE FATHER AND SON WORKING SIDE BY SIDE IT WARMS MY SOUL TO SEE HOW WELL YOU TWO GET ALONE AND MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU
I guess Ellie is a "pal" dog, not a "working" dog. You pay her with nice talk and sweet caress. She's very sweet.
Your welds are going to hold just fine. That being said, on your vertical welds try this technique. Root pass, start at the bottom and whip the rod up and away from your puddle just for a split second so that the puddle will solidify just a bit. Keep your arc going on the upward whip. Then add some more weld to the top of the puddle and just keep on stacking onto your weld. When you’re done it will look horrible but that’s just the slag. Chip it away and admire your weld. For your first cover pass use a “U” shaped stroke that widens your weld. For the final cover pass use a squared-off “U” shaped weld and widen your weld even more. This is a “Three-pass vertical up” weld and it is often used to certify stick welders (or “Weldors” if you prefer. Your finished sample weld is called a “coupon” and it’s then placed in a jig with a hydraulic press with gauges to indirectly measure tons applied to your sample weld. Make the required tonnage and you’re a certified stick welder. I got my neat certificate about thirty years ago. Still in a box somewhere. 🤷🏻♂️
When you’re using any rod that has a flux coating “7018-6011” when you are welding vertical you start from the bottom and weld up. That way the slag doesn’t pass you’re puddle
@@jessebenell8823 Agree with you and localcrew. Weld up on vertical welds.
@@waterman91966 Glad to see you guys comments. I was taught to never weld down hill. I cannot speak for wire welders, just stick. Exceptional farm engineering though.
Cole, I heard there is a new store that just opened close to you that does tire repairs and replacements, asked Brian were it is located!! LOL
Cole, it sure does make me feel good that the future of farming in this country has young men and women like you. I watch other farming channels and you all have the work ethic and drive this country was build on. Kudos to your parents you giving that to you. Great job on the gates, they look fantastic.
Oh Brian another great concert, thanks. I also like that Alice in Chains song. Keep up the great work you guys.
9:43 There's obviously nothing better than a real long lay, you're absolutely right. And that's all I've got to say about that.
Oh we're still here. Sometimes the best content is at the end. I suggest to watch every video until the end.
It's funny
You guys own a shop now and still flat tire problems. Great video
Cole we are gonna need you to go ahead and work this weekend, you'll need to drill and tap those hinges and throw in some zerks ok... ;)
Hey Cole, next year we're going to the Farm Progress Show so pack ur bags I'll be coming to get you.
Drill and tap some zerk fittings in those hinges. Always learning.
Way to go Cole fix that farm up dude it will be your one day so yeah make it nice for ya in the coming years !👍👌🇺🇲
If Coles Granddad could see all the tools Cole has to place gates he would be pleased and amazed.
Do you ever drill & tap a hole in that outer-hinge-pipe
and put a zirk fitting so you can grease the hinge once every couple of years?
only thing i would've did different on the hinges would've been to drill a hole in them before you put them on so i could tread a grease zert in them
Well done Cole you did a perfect job Brian must be proud of you
I was in Vietnam in 1969 and one day I’ll write my experience with a Rooster over there.
He scared the crap out of me.
That's one solid fence, It's always a good watch when u tune in to your channel. 💯. Thank you
Cole, your million dollar gate site turned out really good. Something you can look back on with a sense of pride and accomplishment for years to come. I am thinking you might have had some pent up energy after being down with your knee for so long.
I am amazed how much you are able to get around and back down on your knees after your surgery. I didn't have surgery and my knees ache just watching you. But so glad things are going so well. Love your vids.
Thanks for another great video. It was most certainly interesting and enjoyable to watch. Isn’t it always the way it goes when you need a piece of equipment from the shed, it is way back against the far wall. So is where the ditch mower is/oh my. Can remember doing that myself. But your mower looks a lot better than the old piece we had. Need some photos of how it does with the ditches. Thanks for showing us how you moved that back tire in to help with mowing. Neat idea. Probably would not have noticed that otherwise. Well Cole, job well done on the gates-congratulations on a project well done!!!!! Your work ethic and desire to achieve are noteworthy!!!!!! Good person you are!!!!!! Of course, dad also!!!!!! Hey dad thanks for the rooster 🐔 reminder. I am a Vietnam veteran and know what you where talking about. That song came out of Vietnam. Memories, oh my. Well, back to farming. Gates done and ditches mowed, projects for the day. Is it just me, or do you have a lot of low tires. ?? I realize you can pick of nails and such on the farm but lots of low tires. Some just go down from sitting a long time. Don’t know how I got one that subject, that’s all I know about that!!!!! Heard that before. Thanks for spraying the cattle with fly spray. You folks take real good care of your herds. Very good!!!
Above it for now. You all take care and be safe. And that is all I have to say about that. You and your dad are getting me trained. Thanks. The Iowa farm boy from years ago.
another great video. Really enjoyed see your dad. You did a great job on the gates there buddy, A big thank you to both of you guy.
Get that pay raise from Dad! Welders are making big bucks! Great job!
Rooster was Jerry Cantrell's father's nickname in Vietnam, the song is about resilience and leaving wife and child behind and watching his buddy die in combat.
I still love me some Brian Sonne though lol.
And to think Biden has embarrassed the whole nation and brought scorn to all the Vets

Brian bringing the rock lore to the table!
We needed to see some of his ditch mowing Cole.
Thanks for the easy slide forks reminder. Hope Cole TCS is watching.
Greeze them new gate pivot points, please.
Good morning gentlemen. Another awesome vid. Pro tip for your gates, helps them operate smoothly, and they will last for many years to come. Drill and Tap the hinges, add a grease zirk, few pumps of grease, once a year, will keep them squeak free, and opening and closing, freely. You can do that when they are hanging, or when making a new one, just remember to not drill to far into the gate pipe, just enough to get all the way through the hinge. Or the grease won't help you. We used to have some gates here, that were over 45 years old, and they would swing with minimal effort. Give your dad a hug, he's my kind of people.
Good video Cole,Brian, and Ellie.I hope things are going well @Sonne Farms and nice looking heifers.
Cole great job. I enjoy watching you and your Dad . I like hear comes the roster .God bless you all.
Nice work makes you feel good what you have done. Have a great day
Are you sure you aren't using " winter weight" air in your tires ? That might be why they are going flat so much. We always put thicker air in our tires during the summer.
Lol too funny, that flash back picture reminded me of the first video I ever watch in your channel where that crazy cow tried to join the Grand Prix and jumped the yellow gate 🤣🤣
Maybe Should've put some grease fittings on those gates😁
Rooster was Jerry Cantrells Dads nickname given to him by his grandfather. That's what they called him in Vietnam. The song was written from the perspective of Jerrys father, Rooster.
I build gate hinges just like yours and a few lately I’ve even drilled a hole through the outer sleeve and threaded a grease zerk into it... I know, I know us commenters have all the answers but just thought I’d share
I was thinking the same thing but since I'm not a welder I wasn't sure if that would work. There's no reason it couldn't be added now, is there ?
Maybe one of the top and one in the middle on opposite sides ?
Your welds will get exponentially better if you weld up hill instead of down.
Great job on the Gates Cole
them Plastic sauce bottles with Nozzle fill with sump oil
always handy to oil something Squeeky
Nice job on the gates! The only thing I really like about school was the shop classes. Metal, Wood, Automotive shop and we even wire wrapped our own electric motors, in the 50's
Someone who does not make mistakes
this person is not doing anything
Hey Cole I suspect that you’re gonna figure it out as you progress.👍👍
Good job on the gates. I wish schools taught kids things like welding, among other things. My 15 yr old grandson recently learned how to weld. It's a skill I know he'll use all his life.
They used to. The wood shop and the metal/weld were across from each other in 1994. Then the building was demolished and a new basketball arena was built over it.
I grew up in the Upper Midwest and we had Woodshop, Automotive/Small Engine shop, Metal Shop/ Foundry and Welding shop. I was taught arc & mig Welding on a big blue Miller machine, of which our school had 8 units. To this day I still can lay down a nice bead and have never had any welding training beyond high school. I think it's near to impossible to find any school system that offer any type of shop classes anymore.
@@looklookerlooking My son graduated high school in 1985. They had auto shop, wood shop and metal shop . None of those exist anymore. There is no teaching of any of the trades. It's sad because in the future who is going to do all those things. It will be easy to find someone to fix your computer but who is going to work on your car or fix your plumbing.
I totally support the Mike Rowe foundation that provides scholarships for people wanting to learn the trades.
@@looklookerlooking I graduated in 2003, and we had a really, really nice ag mechanics welding shop. The auto shop was terrible, but I went back to say hi to my teachers a few years later, and found they had built a brand new fantastic auto shop next to the welding shop. These things absolutely exist, but unfortunately not all school districts are created equal.

GREAT Video, I appreciate the welding explination on the welds, I'm a small farmer and hay cutting junkie, retired from 30 yrs of EMS, chasing my late father - in - laws ways, also enjoy your Dad chiming in. Thanks for taking time to share your farm life.
Hey Cole. If you weld a 4’ extension on
the gate post and run a turn buckle and cable or a light length of pipe, to the other end of gate. That will take the weight off the hinges. Less lube, wear, and squeaking from the hinges.
You can get welding cable extensions with quick discounts, that you can use on ground (-) or positive (+) welding leads. Nice job on the gates!
Good suggestion. Or skids to open and close. Wheels are more expensive.
Just a word of advice u could drill that hinge and put a grease fitting on it, once u packed it with grease u would not have to tough it again
Thank you for making the last gate the same height as it's neighbor, you have seriously messed with my OCD by not making them all the same height, but I'm working through it. Thanks for sharing the video.
Great job with the gates and video, Cole. Ms. Ellie is too busy with her supervisor duties to help with clean up chores.
Really good videos, they make me a bit homesick. I spent my youth summers on a farm near Philip with my Grandfather. He sure gave me a good start in life.
You could drill some grease fittings into your sleeve hinges. Just a thought.
Good job Cole ! Glad you got some cooler temps !
A suggestion for lube on your future gates. Before you weld the gates up, drill the hinge so you can mount a grease zerk. Grease lasts much longer than oil for gate lube.
Need a trailer for that welder!
it looks very professional to me cole you did a super job, you and your dad what a team
I know nothing about welding except to keep your eyes closed or don't look at the spark.. nice job from where I set..
The rooster (eagle) in nam may have been the 101st airborne, Jimmy Hendrix old division.
It was indeed what the Vietnamese thought was on the 101st airborne sleeves. The song was written by Jerry Cantrell for his father who did serve in Vietnam.
Well Big C your welding skills are pretty darn good. I know Brian must be proud.
“Got the drip iced out my friends call me big C remember the name homie” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 keep up the amazing content
Nice job Cole. Thanks for sharing.
My offer still stands to drop ship you some Simonize tire Defender at cost. Prices are going up 9-15. It does a great job. Sealed a set of tires on a 1935 tractor in a museum last Friday.
Was just checking weather for my neck of the woods (the hillls) and noted it looks like you fellas are getting a nice bit of rain 🌧 today.
Cole great job. Next time park 10 feet closer, plus you will save time going back and forth. Those long cables just end up getting damaged over time. Also you do a really solid job welding. If you welded every day you would be as good as any pipeline welders out there. Great skill to have.
COLE I ALWAYS ENJOY WATCHING YOUR AMAZING VIDEOS STAY SAFE OUTTHERE
I build my gates the same way as you but I drill and tap a hole and put a grease zerk in each hinge then you grease it about every 5 years weather they need it or not and they work really good. Some of my gates are 30 years old and still going strong.
On your hinges, you should be able to drill and thread in grease zerks. They don't have to be perfect but would let you grease them once and they would be lubed for a year
Cole you can raise the amps up all the way on the machine and use a large rod to pierce through metal like a torch.
Glad you got your gates done, you do a good job of welding like you channel take care and God Bless
Arthur & Teresa from WV
Ideas: When doing vertical welds, go from bottom to top, build grease zerks into your hinges and or stock your store with lubricant and not just wd40. :-)
A 1/4 inch hole and a self tapping grease fitting. Problem solved and he has a portable grease gun
A tip I got from a pro-welder friend is to weld up not down in vertical areas. This allows the weld puddle to penetrate better.
couple of grease fittings next time might help..lol squeak looks great, you did a great job
Cole. The welding videos have been nice. Seeing the layout and reason to the lay out of your carol systems. That is a nice Lincoln welder. Hope to see more use!
Thanks for the offer of learning from your fencing mistakes! But my amigo from the frozen tundra, been there, done that, got the T-shirt! If you can find what’s called pump barrel pipe, it’s 2 and a quarter inch, thick walled. If a pissy Bull hits it, and trust me, we have wild cattle in a few spots here in Tejas, it will ring there bell.
Grab a paint Mitten or two and nephews and throw some paint on the gates and fences. The job looks great. Good luck with harvest and beef prices.
Cole, I have 2 John Deere gators, I was constantly airing up tires, because of corn stalks, thorny locust trees, sticks and even deer antlers. In March I put tweel wheels on both gators, I highly recommend them, they are not cheap but worth every penny.
Your dad is an AIC fan for sure since he knows the story of the rooster brian is a true o.g.
You might consider drill and tapping hinge collars with grease zerk. A little to grease to keep it lubed and may delay the rust from making it tighter fit.
6010 all the way! Burn that rust off! Flat bar is a good idea but try it BETWEEN the post and hinge pipe. Much easier
11:06 when you get up at 1:00am to get a glass of water and you open the cabinet door 😂😂😂
You did a great job designing and building the gates. I was wondering how the fly treatment worked on the cows. Thanks for a grreat video and see you next time.
I was going to add the comment about the gate pole extension and and tension cable. Could you add grease zerks to those gate tube hinges? Pump it full - it might just help
Cole you can still drill the round pipe that you used as hinges tap it for a grease zerk and pump in some grease. It will last longer then spray lube. Just a suggestion.
You should weld up a skid for your welder and have bottle racks and a tool box so you can easily have all of your stuff together and move it around easy
I think that your gates are just fine. Did a great job on your gates.
love the welding. and love that you've fit your interest into the family farm. keep going!
That “shelf” for sitting the hat on looked nice! Impressive! The finished work looks really good!
Back in Army Intelligence, several years before my day, it was called the ASA or Army Security Agency. Their emblem was a eagle's talon grasping a pair of lightning bolts. It was called the "Lightning Fast Chicken". Not because we, they, were cowards or anything but most likely because we, they, knew it when it was the right time to unass an area before the grunts did.
Heck of a good job welding and fabrication of the fences there Cole awesome channel keep the great videos coming always enjoy
Love your videos. Makes me miss working with my dad on our farm here in Iowa
Great job Cole! You should really watch that music video that Brian was talking about.
Nice work on the gates! Enjoyed watching them come together. Better a little too tall than too short.
Drill and tap the hinges for grease fittings next time. Good job
You know what time it is now?! R.I.P. Lane. I miss you every day. 💔
Cole: I'm always impressed by your work ethic!---I would have liked to see before and after shots of the flies on the cattle. Maybe next time?
Hey Cole,
Great work on the gates, think the problem with the tight open and closing is the collar on the top of the hinge pipe is the same thickness so with that being said pipe hinge being welded to the post should have had a 1/8 to a 1/4in spacer behind it so the collar isn't rubbing on the post. Over time it'll wear so they'll open and close easier. Keep up the good work.
that plate at 12-30 weld a longer one on put it on angle so when the gate shuts it climbs the angle saves you lifting every time so simple saves time
Nicest all position welding rod I've ever used Lagrange 70s (Blue Rod) they make my stick welding even look good.
Hi Brian and Cole sonne farms
You are doing a great job welding and designing the gates i teach welding and you have been spot on with everything you are doing 2 helpful tips.... if you gap the hinges away from the post just a little with a steel spacer the top will not rub the post and the holes in the weld is from slag getting in front of you 7018 likes running vertical up better. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks !! If I ever need to install a gate well now I know how to do it !!🙋♀️💗
Great job Cole 👍one nan band💪Aloha from Hawaii🤙😎🏝
The story Brian was talking about was the 101st Airborne. The Vietnamese had never seen a Bald Eagle. They thought it was a chicken. Little history lesson.
Gates look great. If you could tap zero fittings in you could grease that squeak away
