Big respect for admitting the error and doing your best to communicate the issue to your viewers. Thanks!!!
Good advice, well done for highlighting this. Also on a small booth like that, best to avoid VOCs (solvents, propellants etc), also, even water based acrylics will bounce back 'plasticised' particals from time to time.
One thing people should keep in mind is that not all fans in spray booths are spark proof, thus flammable paints like spray paints could cause ignision and explosion. Just something to keep in mind when buying/building spray booth.
Would never do such a foolish thing--kill a lung to save a filter. But, thanks for the PSA.
Foolish, yes - but it just never crossed my mind. As soon as I realized if stupid I was being I addressed it. I think sometimes we all miss the forrest through the trees....
Thank you sir, I’ll will try this advise for sure
well done mate, humble pie is always difficult to swallow but you got the job done with loads of respect, i have seen the filters being covered on a few channels so this vid of yours will save the future health of many people....
i have my filter in place as standard plus i use a room extractor fan, but i still ALWAYS wear an M3 dust mask as well, i have worked doing crash repair in a garage back in the 80's and it was drummed into me by my mentor to look after my lungs so i even have a 4" flexy duct going from my booth upto the room extract fan to also remove fumes to the outside........ i couldnt find a breathing mask small enough for my parrot lol
respect ... funky
And with my lung issues, I'm even more concerned about you guys as I wouldn't wish this shit on anyone.
I'm glad you chose to share this with your viewers. You are not the only person using the paper towel pre-filter and I've seen it on several other CZcams channels.
Seriously, If you had seen the cloud I was sitting in you would have plotzed!
Great info and at least you corrected it.. Great job💪💪💪💪
That funny looking attachment for the far end is supposed to vent outside the building. Working mostly with aircraft dope, getting the fumes out of the building isn't a choice, it's a necessity. There have been many times that I've left the garage after spraying a 600 sq inch wing, and my feet never touched the ground for the next hour.
Thanks for the advice! Doing some homework before building my own spray booth.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, thank you
Thank you for the tip, subbed!
Welcome to the Channel!
Thank you for that wonderful PSA that you did I understand that you were heavy-hearted when you did it don't worry about it everybody makes mistakes there is a company here in Michigan that sells special filters for those paint booths actually they're quite cheap for a dozen what you can change out after every painting
That would be great. My AC company said it is better to use crappy filters and change them out every month than to not change enough with expensive ones. Seems the same could apply here....
great update
Agree, that's why I use a spray booth with a 9 m3/min suction capacity. Most cheaper versions are only 3-4 m3/min.
What spray both candidates do you suggest. Im buying my first airbrush to weather some of my o gauge trainboard scenery snd probably some rolling stock. My workbench is 20 feet from the nearest unscreened 18 by 24 inch window in my celler, unoped in 25 years. So exhausting to outside might be a problem. Planning on vallejo and tamiya acrylics only.
Thanks I have same booth just started out, where would you recommend or somewhere suitable to vent the outlet pipe other than out the window, cheers.
One would have thought in the first place that paper towels would obstruvt the aitflow🙄
I never said I was the smartest man in the World. LOL. Of course I knew it would cut airflow, I just didn't realize how bad it actually was....
Thanks
Thanks for informing us of this issue - I thought your paper towel pre-filter was a great idea and was planning on copying it - I won't be making that mistake.
This one comment made this entire posting worth it then... I'm still a fan of wetting down the booth with a nice mist of water, but yeah... Paper towels are out!
@@pauly7218 I appreciate you going out of your way to share with the community - thanks again
Yes paul let the filter do its job !!! Great video!! I don't clean my filters when they get dirty I just replace them I learned my lesson!! Lol great content!! And info!!
I just replace 'em now too. Too cheap and easy to do it any other way...
Here's a question... if it's ok to airbrush in a open area with no filters why do we worry about placing a filter between us and the exhaust fan at all?
Kudos to fessing bio to the bad advice. Respect. That’s they way to do it. Thumbs up.
Always!
also you can cause your fan to burn out prematurely. However, there is something you can do to keep the filters cleaner longer.Use a light weight cardboard box (not necessarily corrugated but corrugated will work tho harder to cut.) Glue the bottom of the box shut. If the box isn't too deep, you can also glue the top shut.Cut fairly wide slots in the bottom, then in the top, NOT lining up with the ones in the bottom. You can do more layers like this...to explain what I mean, you're making baffles, not an actual filter, the baffles should not change the amount of air drawn through, but will slow it down just a little.Take a look at commercial grease vents if you don't get what I'm saying. The baffles catch a lot of the larger particulates preserving the filters a bit longer.
That is really very brilliant, and should work great... Thanks for sharing!
@@pauly7218 just make sure the slots are wide and there is enough distance between layers. You can add as many layers as required, just make sure the airflow stays reasonable.
thanks pumpkin paul
Was thinking about getting one of these type of spray booths. Is it safe to lay down paint jobs using enamel and lacquer based paints. Just nervous as every website has that warning, not intended for use with flammable explosive paints etc. great vid btw.
I spray what I spray and have never had an issue. If really concerned, once done painting don't shut down until the vapor has cleared. The fan running shouldn't be an issue, an arch would most likely come from turning on/off the booth, so just leave it run a bit to let any mist clear....
ventilate ! you may want to have a out side way for the fums to bleed out just an idea!
Here's a question... if it's ok to airbrush in a open area with no filters why do we worry about placing a filter between us and the exhaust fan at all?
Thanks for the video! How often would you recommend changing the filter on a spray booth?
It really is about your usage. Light spraying with just an airbrush can go longer than say if you are using rattle cans. When it starts looking like the air passages are closing, change. The earlier the better....
Hoovering the air filter helps
Paul do you use this booth for applying powder coat?
For your rings or just paint?
No. As I used a charged brush and don't spray, I really don't have a big need for it. If I were going to spray from the gun I would re-think the process...
I wouldnt risk using a booth like that with the motor being inline with the fumes being extracted. Its a disaster waiting to happen. It blows my mind that people use solvent based paints with these cheapo booths.
I have never heard of anyone blowing up using one, and I'm a life long model builder and 38 year veteran of the fire service. Possible? I guess, but I think it's fine....
Have u use the exhaust pipe which comes with the machine to make the air go out from the window? I am wonder is it a must to use it🤔 cause my basement has no window...but basement is the only place i can do airbrush painting...🤨
I don't use mine. The filter does an admirable job. Having said that, I would If I had a workable way to use it, but I don't.
BUT KEEP YOUR FILTER CLEAN AND REPLACE IT OFTEN!
Have you tryed filling a bucket / tub halfway with warter cut a hole in the lid and attach exhaust pipe to the lid .so as to vent into it
@@sprockylock391 i didnt, is it works?
why would u put papel towel there it doesnt make sense?
So I figured out. I just thought I could extend the life of the filters. My brain must have taken the day off....
@@pauly7218filter are cheap, u could try wash it every time u finish a job....that could extent
Good video Fella. Hey, you should change your channel name to "Vegas Fats"
Oh, Live and Learn on this one.
I like that. I can't really change the name but it could be a "nickname"!
Duh.
Paper towels or anything other than filter material should be used as a filtering media. The only thing that should be used is green or blue filters not the pleated paper ones either. PLeated paper filters are horrible for your booth and your furnace and professional Hvac people will confirm that the green and blue floss type filters are the best as they don't restrict airflow as bad as pleated styles as they get filled thus making your unit and fans work less to move air.
Yep... I learned the hard way!
Duh
Right?
