As world champion he should have made a statement on his own saying he will comment on the cheating after the tournaments. It's a little disappointing that the interviewer had to push so hard to get him to say something so basic.
There appears to be an enormous amount of people unaware of the lawsuits that will *immediately* follow if someone publicly accuses a professional chess player of cheating. This is why Magnus (and everyone else on Magnus' side) is saying little to nothing when asked about Hans Niemann.
Gotta love how the interviewer asked one first question about cheating, then moved on to other questions as if that was it, and then came back in force with some incisive questions. Made me feel like it was pretty tactical. Either way it’s good to finally from Magnus on this mess, even if only in passing.
Now that he said he'll comment after the tournaments, he's fine. It's sad that the interviewer had to force it out of him when he should have said it himself a long time ago but at least it's done. Which part of "If I speak I'm in trouble" isn't clear? He can't publicly speak about what happened because he's limited by the agencies and secrecy. It's not a simple "I accused Hans", there is a process behind their actions that is bigger than Magnus himself

I think the most important thing he indicated was that he might be able to speak after the tournament is over. I really don't think he can say anything more than he said here, at this point.
Maxim Dlugy is a GM who is suspected of having cheated in a titled Tuesday event online, and also happens to be one of Hans Niemann's coaches. I find it quite suspicious that Maxim Dlugy was known for having been beating top tier players in blitz at a younger age. He also accused another player of cheating with an electronic device in their shoe. The very fact that he is mindful of some electronic device being a potential route for cheating suggests that he has researched the topic. His past is also sketchy, having been convicted of embezzlement previously. Maxim Dlugy is known for being an "intuitive" player, and Hans has said the same of himself in a Sinquefield cup interview. Perhaps being an "intuitive" player is code for I don't really want to have to explain my chess moves in detail because they just came to him naturally. I was leaning towards Hans being innocent prior to these revelations, but now I'm leaning more towards Hans being introduced to a cheating method that's much more sophisticated then an electronic device in the shoe by this Dlugy character, who presumably was searching for a young chess prodigy who he knew would not be opposed to breaking the rules (Hans has admitted to cheating using the engine on chess.com). Of course, there is no concrete evidence of cheating and therefore it is unwarranted to make direct accusations but there should be high suspicions placed on Hans Niemann and his future chess career.
I have seen his videos of full 3 hours blitz , well I even had downloaded it via link sent to my email ( not sure if it's on you tube). In that videos he defeated Garry Kasparov calmly and explained as well. Well I had no idea back than who this max guy was but now it's all coming together. He might have used engine lines ( can't confirm this fact)
if they face each other again, it'll be matches, not a single game. if he forfeited all the matches (it's a lot, over 2 days) there's no way for him to win. i'm sure since it's practically carlsen's event he'll make sure he won't get paired w hans so that he still has a shot at winning.
She was too worried about a question everyone knows. Of course he thinks Han's cheated but that is the question that definitely should have been asked.
Magnus please be brave and say what most of us are sure about : Hans is a selective engine user, he is getting sophisticated assistance ( not always a top engine move ) to get away with it. the way he crushed Levon ( g4) , Chucky and Duda is insane. the guy was 2450 2 years ago !
Now I really I wonder what Magnus is going to say, since it seems he's still pretty adamant about Hans in otb... Even though Hans is clearly proving he can play at super GM level in this tournament, with cameras and drama hanging on his back. Better be sure Maggy!
The reference to Maxim Dlugy makes it clear that Carlsen does indeed think that Niemann is cheating. Niemann does not have a coach/mentor and has mentioned this in several interviews. Dlugy is also infamously known for being caught cheating online on numerous occasions even more so than Niemann.
So he will speak further after the tournament. Very well. This was something huge for chess and many eyes will be on it if he decides to do it on a interview style format
This is epic. Hahaha. Maxim must have done a great job as a mentor...hahaha. This Maxim Dugly was accused for fraud in Russia in early 2000s, and was later banned from Titled Tuesday for cheating. Interestingly the same man accused another player for hiding a device in his shoes. Magnus knows what he is doing, and doing the sport a great favour.
Never a magnus fan before but recently I found myself as his big fan. Even with all this drama, I think no one else can bring this up except magnus.. All the best magnus.
"I have to say I am very impressed by Niemann's play and I think his mentor Maxim Dlugy (who cheated) must have been doing a great job" - haha love the comment.
Magnus wants to elaborate on cheating, but just offers hints instead. Can't blame him really, as he's liable to get sued for anything he can't fully prove.
Anyone can get sued, it is simply everyone's right in a civilized country to bring his cause to justice. That does not mean winning. Also, you cannot be blamed for being suspicious or having opinions. The other party must bring some clear proof of a real existing prejudice. Also, while i dont necessarily think Niemann cheated this time, his past may not do him any favors. Magnus was simply being polite because it is first a moral issue to accuse someone of something without being really certain. Then a legal one. Saying this as a legal professional.
People are talking out of their asses. You can give an opinion. You don't need to accuse. If magnus said "in my opinion he is cheating" Or "I have a strong belief that he might be cheating" or "there might be something to Niemanns game that is not completely clean" or any other of the thousand ways of sharing an opinion, no court would likely decide against him, as opinions fall under free speech. This being said the fact that they don't even live in the same country would complicate it even more. Slander involves sayi ng a fact, that you know to be wrong for malicious reasons, with the intent of hurting the reputation of another person. So no, doubt it very much, that there are any legal proceedings with merit going on in the background.
Well at this point I would have already taken professional legal advice and sued Magnus for at least defamation or something related to it, If knew I was honest, I could win the case or not is mostly irrelevant. I would have given the headache he has well deserved. But yet again, If I knew I was 100% honest...
What she should have asked him, or what she should ask him next time, is: _"Besides the current measures already being taken at OTB events, what additional measures would you like to see implemented?"_ ... Because think about it...A cheater does not even have to use an electronic device on their person to cheat. They could simply receive signals from someone in the same room, or within visual range, (e.g. glasses on/off) and that would be enough for them to know that they have a winning move in the current position or that their opponent has made a mistake.
Guys, read the description. Magnus has clearly written Hans' coaches' name Maxim Dlugy here. Dlugy was the one person who supported Hans during the first wave of suspicions, saying that Hans was a gifted chess player or something similar. If Hans is cheating, his coach is most likely in on it.
Pretty clear Magnus has been instructed not to comment on the subject because he could be liable for some kind of civil court case if he makes an allegation that hasn't been independently verified. So, his silence for the interim is not by choice, as he probably doesn't want to pay someone a million dollars. But, it's also pretty clear he will comment on it when he can, and he still thinks this is not resolved and that Hans is not cleared of suspicion. So the court of public opinion shouldn't be rendering a judgment yet, and yet I see many commenters doing that.
People saying he is a sore loser doesnt make sense. The guy have been playing continuously for ages reaching the highest ever rating for any human and even now can comfortably lose to youngsters (for example recently lost 3 consecutive games to Prag) and applaud them as well. He hates to lose but always gives due credit to his opponents whenever he loses. And now if he has inside info about any investigation about a particularly proven online cheater, or about leaks of his plan, or whatever, he is well within his rights to keep his mouth shut. It's not being a diva, it's just being sensible.
Magnus is the King of chess, sometimes we need to heed the King’s advice in life and ask no more questions. Maybe this problem cannot ever be fully resolved, but I for one believe in the King and listen to the King as he has led the chess world now for over 10 years.
@@stefanjoeres7149 Hans has admitted to cheat online. But not OTB. The question is whether he has cheated OTB and this question has not been answered yet.
Almost having your career ended by a manchild is not at all a compliment. You are giving magnus an out so even if it turns out he maliciously lied you can defend him.
I'm an industrial designer and I believe the solution to the cheating problem in chess lies in the chairs the players sit on. If equipped with vibration sensors, and also sensors for muscle contractions in the seated part, they would eliminate the most likely means of communication with a device hidden on or in the body. As swollen devices probably are equipped with a pressure sensor, allowing them to be controlled by flexing the stomach muscles (thus increasing the abdominal pressure), a belt may also be part of the solution I think.
You have to remember Magnus is the WC so maybe he's like on a contract or something where he can't directly say certain things. I highly doubt MAGNUS would just let someone get away without being forced to. He's a smart player and smart person, who knows his motives, who knows if Hans is cheating. Magnus knows things, probably things we will never hear.
I am not following chess for that long but i really admire Magnus. He has a personality of a man who don't give a f.. about anyone's opinion not a people pleasure, he refuse to play on world chess day by saying "not in a mood" 😂 and he do things in his own away and still a world champion 😍 He shattered that image of "nerd chess champion" he gives a vibe of a guy from your group
Well except of being a coward and drama queen that is of course. He can accuse people of cheating without taking a personal stance, he could say something like "Hans made a few moves that were very computer like which i have to admit being suspicious off, but i also cant tell if he cheated or not he could have seen these moves. What i would be interested in is an investigation into this game, it throw me so completely off that i cant even play against him because my emotions take over and i cant even play chess" I mean would anyone in the world accuse Magnus of anything here? No of course not, would it cause drama, yes a little bit. Would it cause more or less drama then what Magnus decided to do? A drop in an ocean. So why a coward and drama queen? Well he hasnt said something this open, and a drama queen yes by not saying it. On his chess playing, he is still at the top of the world i would say. He has been completely dominating the scene for several years as the undisputed master. Nor do i accuse him of cheating either because i dont believe he is one.
I wouldn't say so. I mean it doesn't take a genius not to throw around direct accusations if you have absolutely no proof and there is legal action hanging over your head that could lose you a lot of money? I would call that common sense.
his own reputation surely took a hit by implicitly accusing someone without providing any kind of proof and forfeiting that last game this way. So he probably wont face any legal consequences, but if he fails to provide proof or investigations continue to turn out negative on his implicit allegations, this fuzz will leave a bigger stain on him than on Niemann
cheating or not, Hans got the most incredible rise in FIDE chess ranking. For me its kinda suspicious, he got more or less 1 year to jump from 2500 +/- to 2700 rating. Even Magnus needed more or less 2,5 years to achieve it

Gotta love how the interviewer asked one first question about cheating, then moved on to other questions as if that was it, and then came back in force with some incisive questions. Made me feel like it was pretty tactical. Either way it’s good to finally from Magnus on this mess, even if only in passing.
The interview speaks for itself.
I see a man with principles trying to navigate a tricky path and taking big hits while doing so. I wish him all the best.
Now that he said he'll comment after the tournaments, he's fine. It's sad that the interviewer had to force it out of him when he should have said it himself a long time ago but at least it's done. We can all just wait now.
I still expect players in future chess tournaments to receive no penalties for withdrawing from on-going tournaments and resigning games from a neutral position, otherwise there's huge favoritism going on.
i see a coward that doesn't say what he means
@@PirateTHESteam1 same
@Tara Bartholomew if he is so worried about that perhaps he shouldn't have thrown a massive and very public tantrum
I think Niemann has someone on another area controlling his mouse when Niemann plays. maybe niemann has a device for it, but it maybe isn't nedded one to cheat in his case..
Which part of "If I speak I'm in trouble" isn't clear?
He can't publicly speak about what happened because he's limited by the agencies and secrecy. It's not a simple "I accused Hans", there is a process behind their actions that is bigger than Magnus himself
Well cant he just say "there's a legal process behind" ? Then everything is clear. Otherwise we just don't know
NO. Magnus accused him of cheating, indirectly, but doesn't have the GUTS to come right out and say it.
@@federicozig6365 If he did that, the chess commentators would be free to talk about it since it'd be Magnus to reveal it first, just my opinion. It seemed he tried to answer as little as he could

People don't even understand why he refrained from accusing Hans and are just commenting bad stuff about him.
I think the most important thing he indicated was that he might be able to speak after the tournament is over. I really don't think he can say anything more than he said here, at this point.
Magnus Carlsen already said what need to be said. It is good to see that Carlsen is his own boss.
She asked questions like a chess master; positioning, maneuvering, tactics and then a draw!!!
It's almost as if she has an entire studio in her ear feeding her information and questions.
@@jakobs3202 You are so smart. I hadn't realized until your brilliant comment that she didn't work alone ...
We also have to take into account that Hans has nothing to lose from this as he would never be able to play at such a level without this assistance.
Bruh
I have seen his videos of full 3 hours blitz , well I even had downloaded it via link sent to my email ( not sure if it's on you tube).
In that videos he defeated Garry Kasparov calmly and explained as well. Well I had no idea back than who this max guy was but now it's all coming together.
He might have used engine lines
( can't confirm this fact)
Some valid points except the guy with the shoe, in fact, was cheating that way and also, Maxime was acquitted of embezzlement..
Dlugy said it would be easy for 2600 to get away with cheating a few times a game. Then proceeds to get band for cheating
U missed most important question :
If Magnus and niemann reached finale, then do we see 1.5 moves or full game ??? 🤔🤔🤔
if they face each other again, it'll be matches, not a single game. if he forfeited all the matches (it's a lot, over 2 days) there's no way for him to win. i'm sure since it's practically carlsen's event he'll make sure he won't get paired w hans so that he still has a shot at winning.
She was too worried about a question everyone knows. Of course he thinks Han's cheated but that is the question that definitely should have been asked.
The video blurring option does a good job showing us the place is in total order.

Magnus is a genius in telling some underlying hints. Look at Niemanns Mentor and the door will open the truth.
I can’t believe Ive forgotten to watch todays livestream! So much has happened and I missed it all
bro, that interviewer asked such good questions plus she looks beautiful :)
How is he getting these moves though???
G4 was a bad move according to engine
@@mikehelterbrand4858 and how do you know which engine is he using?
@@amberxv4777 Stockfish 15 is the most powerful engine of this time, if it says its bad. Then the move is most likely bad.
Glad to hear Magnus again!
Great interview, nicely done.
Because there's nothing to prove
Hans team were sending his arse tje wrong signals
Good interview. As much as we can expect for now
Thank you for doing that Kaja
What she should have asked him, or what she should ask him next time, is: _"Besides the current measures already being taken at OTB events, what additional measures would you like to see implemented?"_
... Because think about it...A cheater does not even have to use an electronic device on their person to cheat. They could simply receive signals from someone in the same room, or within visual range, (e.g. glasses on/off) and that would be enough for them to know that they have a winning move in the current position or that their opponent has made a mistake.
What a gigachad.. uploads his own interview on his own channel without elaborating
I think this channel is not run by magnus himself
This is not his channel
Magnus Chad energy has always been more than his chess energy
@shubham i can’t tell if you are stupid or ignorant
Interview speaks for itself
So is he insinuating that it's Maxim Dlugy that is feeding Hans the moves?
Yes.
But how?
no
Maxim is well known cheater
yes to be fair he cant say much more
People saying he is a sore loser doesnt make sense.
He respected past opponents that beat him. He obviously doesn't respect Hans. Doesn't mean Hans cheated though.
Magnus is the King of chess, sometimes we need to heed the King’s advice in life and ask no more questions. Maybe this problem cannot ever be fully resolved, but I for one believe in the King and listen to the King as he has led the chess world now for over 10 years.
Personally Magnus' Love for the game of chess is his cause, and having that love offended once upon a time is his statement, is my conclusion.
If it turns out that Hans never cheated, this is the biggest compliment he can get. Playing so well that the GOAT of chess accusses you of cheating.
Since Magnus doesn't give concrete accusations, Hans will never be able to answer to them, which is very unfair to him.
Hans has already admitted to cheating, the question is when he did it and how much he cheats.
In the meantime Hans gets a lot of hatred and must have a terrible time with nobody trusting him and accusing him of cheating
@@stefanjoeres7149 Hans has admitted to cheat online. But not OTB. The question is whether he has cheated OTB and this question has not been answered yet.

Feels like we are in the middle of a Netflix documentary
Why can't we see replies to comments anymore

You have to remember Magnus is the WC so maybe he's like on a contract or something where he can't directly say certain things. I highly doubt MAGNUS would just let someone get away without being forced to. He's a smart player and smart person, who knows his motives, who knows if Hans is cheating. Magnus knows things, probably things we will never hear.

Exactly. He's going to make all of his haters talking trash eat their words when nothing of consequence happens to him.
Well except of being a coward and drama queen that is of course.
He can accuse people of cheating without taking a personal stance, he could say something like "Hans made a few moves that were very computer like which i have to admit being suspicious off, but i also cant tell if he cheated or not he could have seen these moves. What i would be interested in is an investigation into this game, it throw me so completely off that i cant even play against him because my emotions take over and i cant even play chess"
I mean would anyone in the world accuse Magnus of anything here? No of course not, would it cause drama, yes a little bit. Would it cause more or less drama then what Magnus decided to do? A drop in an ocean.
So why a coward and drama queen? Well he hasnt said something this open, and a drama queen yes by not saying it.
On his chess playing, he is still at the top of the world i would say. He has been completely dominating the scene for several years as the undisputed master. Nor do i accuse him of cheating either because i dont believe he is one.
Right? He couldn't beat him at chess, so he just played the move of ruining his life IRL. Brilliant.
