How the Monon Railroad Got its Colors

- The Monon Railroad, often known as the "Hoosier Line", was an American railroad operating mostly in the state of Indiana. While not the biggest, it still had connections to sizeable cities outside the state like Chicago, Illinois and Louisville, Kentucky. The Monon was also known for their dual paint scheme system. Red and white for passenger equipment, and gold and black for freight. So how did the Monon's colors come to be, along with their logo?
Music Used:

Wario Land Shake It - Glittertown
Mario Paint - Creative Exercise

The Monon Railroad is a greatly underrated railroad. Glad someone is shedding light onto it, because while it's not my favorite Fallen Flag, it's definitely in my Top 10
Okay
Seriously dude, it is my favorite and I'm so glad someone is covering it, actually as I watch this I'm at the Monon Depot in Salem Indiana where I volunteer
My historical home state railroad! The colors for my sister’s university (Purdue University) is black and gold, used for the freight locomotives. I had visited the Monon Connection Musuem back in July 2019.
@@Rebelgamer-1111 from there why are they tearing up the railroad now
@@SPawn022 they are making a walking trail, it absolutely pisses me off to no end because the manager of the casino of West Baden Springs offered to buy it to make a tourist Railroad, but the federal government basically said screw that we're making a walking trail
As a Hossier who's home town was a stopping point on the Monon, thank you for making this video
Up and Down The Monon
Everything is fine
Because that rootin-tootin Monon she's the Hoosier Line!
All Aboard! All Aboard! It's my Indiana home that I am heading towards!
CSX needs a Monon heritage unit!!!!
You’re in luck mate
I have good news for you.
Growing up, only an hour away from the moon on museum is kind of great
After this video the Monon became one of my favorite railroads! Severely underrated this railroad is.
The Kentucky Railway Museum has a nice example. Since their steam engine is down for rebuild they run their Monon BL2 a lot.
Indiana's own railroad, and a fascinating subject.
Very interesting video! I never connected the colors of the Monon with the nearby universities. Overall a great choice to base your livery on if I do say so myself. It also just so happens that my cousin and a good friend of mine attend Purdue University, so I'll be sure to show it to them.
They also has their own style of crossing lights. A single green light. If the light was out that meant a train was coming.
"Huh, the light isn't red, that must mean there isn't a train coming-"
*WHAM*
The Monon Railroad is another wonderful and interesting American railroad. I’m going to be riding on the Amtrak train from New York City to Washington D.C. and I am also going to see the New York City Subway system too. Both in early October. My Dad’s birthday is coming tomorrow. Great video.
Awesome video. As an L&N fan, there's always been a soft spot on my heart for the old CI&L.
My dad worked for the Monon in the late '50's in their administrative offices. Thanks for this, especially the jingle at the end!
Have to admit, the black and gold looks really sharp, great video thanks!
We need a history of the South Shore Line!!!! The last remaining Interurban Electric Commuter Railroad!!!! you should also throw in the history of its short lived rival the North Shore Line 😎
The North Shore Line was never a rival, they both operated in diffirent areas. Both of them were owned by Samuel Insull at one point (hence why they and the South Shore Line have similar logos, same with the CA&E.) They even had the same colors at one point.
Another great video!
Ok but can we appreciate just how beautiful this thumbnail is
always is neat to see videos featuring the monon. my mother went to depauw and recalls going to the annual monon bell games between Wabash College and Depauw University, winner getting the prized monon bell from one of the old monon steam locos, still played for to this day.
I love coming home after school and seeing these
Finally some one talks about the monon
I’m really liking this smaller video format. Keeps all the info in a nice, small, orderly fashion. Keep it up!
Wow! I love learning about obscure or even not well known railways and railroads, pretty cool!
Your speaking my language, greetings from Westfield, Indiana
it really ran in conjunction with the prr and the nyc.
i'm suprised no monon coaches remain
Interesting new take on your intro! I like it!
you should do a video on the greatest railroad that ever existed (Chicago Great Western)
Underrated railroad
@@WesternOhioInterurbanHistory true
Yet another banger from our man, Jared!
I really like the Monon liveries
Awesome video, as always. I immediately recognised the clip at 2:59. Watching Johnny Cash greeting the conductor made me feel really nostalgic.
Black and Gold would make pretty good liveries
Wow! You got to do a video on the Wabash Railroad.
Your videos are beyond underrated, we need to get you a spot on trending or something for you content.
The Hoosier line is one of the best railroads in Indiana
[insert train joke here]
Seriously though, the song at the end is Really Good!
Great video. I love learning new history on fallen flags. I never knew what Monon stood for
Monon Railroad Memorial. It merged with Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1971. Monon has not been forgotten. The monon will be remembered for generations to come. Thanks amtrakguy365 for helping preserve the old monon railroad
This is great content!
Man, the corridor between Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Nashville, that were all served by both the Monon and the Louisville & Nashville Railroads in the past could benefit BIG TIME if passenger rail were reintroduced, and alleviate traffic congestion off of Interstate 65 (I65). Shame there are virtually no trains serving most of these cities today.
It's such a disappointment that so much of it has been turned into trails for suburbanites rather than keeping the rail and having superior transportation for a much larger percentage of the population.
@@drekieldur1558 Bingo. Plus CSX, and other freight rail companies that own the tracks and other rights of way in these areas, in all their infinite wisdom, are stingy as hell when it comes to the idea of passenger rail.
@@FGH9G Oh yeah, freight's profit motive is terrible for passenger rail. I recently learned that there's so little double track in the US because freight rail can save money on labor and upkeep in a lot of places by using single track lines with longer trains that have less frequent trips.
The Monon is my favorite railroad Fallen flag or anything. I love the unique color scheme about, and the unique locomotives
Finally! Someone has discussed the Monon! Thank you Amtrakguy365!
A very based video topic. Many thanks.
Nice video, I would love to see videos based on popular train stations and their history
Part of the monon's former tracks, or monon trail, is now bridge that span over my current job in westfield, IN.
A video that'll have you singing "Back Home Again In Indiana".
Since then CSX has painted up ES44AH 3058 as the Monon Railroad HU in the Black and Gold (but has Yellow instead of Gold) Freight Scheme now numbered as CSX 1897.
Used to live down by where the old Monon Station was in Carmel. Had an original poster and advertisement of their routes.
YES YES YES YES YES YES MONON!!!
the monon actually ended steam operations a little too early in 1949, though only one monon steam engine is preserved, this is 2-8-2 504, currently soo line 1024, on display at the depot in thief river falls, MN
Typo what I meant to say. The Monon is my favorite railroad Fallen flag or anything. I love the unique color scheme and the unique locomotives
fun fact: The Marquette Rail (michigan short line) bought the rights to the logo and briefly used for close to ten years until G&W bought them out changed it
I know the guy who still retains the rights to the logo
Watching this before a hurricane hits me
Was that Graham Kartna music in the intro?
Edit: YES!
it's a great video, but there's something that was forgotten, a small town with the weirdest history. to be honest I might even do a video on it because it's so weird (I love my town I'm in).
Info Below:
There's something that he forgot, he forgot to mention that the black and gold variation of the Monon (AKA Hoosier line) wasn't just for Purdue University it was also for Greencastle Indiana's very own DePauw University of black and gold tigers. near 231, there's a road called East Hanna Street, there's another street leading off East Hanna Street a little bit farther west called Crown Street, little more past West that way is a parking lot on the right and then if you go to a little bit more west there's a parking lot on the left. The parking lot on the left side next to 318 East Hanna Street is the station that used to supply DePauw University with its students. If you want more information about this and the monon railroad that used to run by from the factory down on Jackson Street towards 231 pass the bowling alley then go to Greencastle Indiana's museum they have a website as well if you look it up.
P.S. I would know since I live on the damn street and I've been here for the past 15 years.
If anyone asks, I will put the museum's website in the comment section below.
P.S.S. i love this railroad and ill always want to make my own lie Steamer in the scheme, and once i do I WILL MAKE A VIDEO, itll be the pride of the state as ill try to base it off something of indiana's special steamers. (even if i move out of state, i will make sure to try to make an official hoosier line Steamer.
Neat stuff
This is a very cool railroad.
LETS GOOO MONON MENTIONED WOOOO
Im screaming!! I live 200 feet from the former trackbed
Love the BL-2’s.
My Great Grandpa worked on the Monon way back when.
Hello this is Scott we had a person from our family and he was the president for the monon railroad for 1963 to 1967 and one of last presidents😮
I seen one of them in was on a dvd called lots and lots of trains
There's a former Monon steam locomotive that's preserved, it eventually wound up on the soo line and became Soo Line #1024
It's a 2-8-2 mikado
We gotta get it back
As a fellow Hoosier, in my opinion, & from what I’ve learned about the Monon Railroad, it was one of the best, & coolest, railroads, Indiana ever had. It’s, honestly, a shame, that its gone. Also, I’m not too fond of the “Rails to Trails” idea. I, personally, think it’s stupid, a waste of time, & a waste of Tax Payer’s money. Why? Mainly, because, every time I pass by an abandoned railroad line, here in Indiana, that got turned into a walking trail, I, hardly, EVER see ANYONE using them. Also, taxpayer’s, money could be used for better, & more important things. For example, improving our infrastructure, or fixing, & repaving, our roads, & major highways. In my opinion, I think they should REBUILD the old railway lines, put ‘em back into operating status, & makes ‘em useful again. Now, it is my conclusion, that people, these days, have better things, to be doing, than walking, an old railroad line, that got turned into, an asphalt trail. When ya remove the tracks, & roadbed, & replace it with asphalt, they are ELIMINATING the, MAIN, EVIDENCE, that there was even a railroad there!
0:30 YES!!!!
Hoosier daddy?
Potawatomi makes me think of pygmy hippopotamus.
YESSSSSSSSS HOOSIERS! HOOSIERS! HOOSIERS!
Nice video
I Love Locomotives BL2 & Highhood C402
Great video new sub to channel great stuff
Bro ur making me save for ho and n scale monon rn 😂😂
Do more MONON STUFF!
When he made the video 1 day before the death of Monon.
Before watching:
ITS COLLEGE TEAM COLORS. Indiana and Purdue are on the main line.
Purdue for Black and Gold, Maroon and Grey for Indiana U.
(And NOTHING for Notre Dame, F*CK Notre Dame)
GO GREEN
I always liked how the Monon had the Purdue colors, which are still on the Boilermaker Special today. Although I personally prefer the red and gray as it reminds me of Ohio State.
Monon woohooo
Man, I wish the Monon survived into modern times.
Given some development from the south shore, the Monon might be making a small revival
Can you do engines of Pennsylvania
Do other railways have there own songs?
Three songs immediately come to mind. _On The Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe_ was written and recorded by the great Johnny Mercer in 1945 for the _MGM_ film _The Harvey Girls,_ which featured Judy Garland in a leading role. In 1946, Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five recorded a Fine and Hirsch composition, _Texas And Pacific,_ with a very fun opening that I won't spoil. _Rock Island Line_ began as a folk song around 1929 and has a very long and colorful history that is a bit too complicated for me to go into great detail about. Debatably, its most famous recording was by The Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group in 1956, although Leadbelly's version from 1945 is also fantastic. While not written _for_ the railroads in question, like 1947's _Up And Down The Monon,_ they could still be counted as the railroads' unofficial theme songs. I'd certainly recommend that you give them all a listen, I think they're superb.
@@VictrolaFoxtrot union Pacific has a theme song
@@DukeOfTrains This is true. I wasn't going to mention that one because I had thought it was never pressed to record. However, I looked into it and, color me surprised, it actually was.
could you talk about the ALC-42
Imagine making a youtube channel for one of the worst countries for rail, worst infrastructure for rail, worst rolling stock, ugliest and most pathetic trains, and being a fan of it, especially amtrak. All the Germans, French, English are laughing at you right now
Please pin this I never stop watching your vids 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏

Fourth, also great video, please respond to the comment

The Monon used to make a stop in my grandma's town. It's a shame it doesn't exist anymore. It's unfortunate that a lot of American small towns lost their rail connections
Nice video
