On the one hand, I love this scene because it’s insane as heck. But at the same time knowing full well that Airforce one was one of the most sophisticated 747’s ever built, I don’t think it would have been THAT easy to destroy with one missile.

The IR thing would stop a missile. A few planes have them. They use lasers to stop missiles from being able to target the aircraft. Downside is they cost millions but it would definitely have one.

They shot down the plane killing a whole bunch of people but especially Jenna, the attractive, quirky lady who was the VP's assistant but had a couple of nice moments in the movie - including a nice bit of comic relief - and was obviously keen on Cale. In movies like this you don't kill off characters like that - and in such a casual way too. Left a bad taste.
I kinda get how you feel, but seeing how this is the same moovie where we watched air force one get taken out by a single missle that shouldnt even have gotten nearly that close it should be apperent that this movie main foucus isnt realism. Still a good movie tho

Not knowing how they didnt get the warning, my assumption, even for the fighter jet is, it was timed to launch at a certain position, and since it was beneath they couldnt see the missile. People are talking about what type of missle it is and forgetting this is a movie and its part of the main plot.

The force of the impact is what created the explosion. This type of missile isnt designed to hit a flying target but as other commenters on the video stated, with enough computational power you could generate a target/flightpath that would intercept the plane. using this method would mean the missile's payload wasnt actually armed by the time it hit the plane. of course it also means that the plane should have had enough time to alter its course, though they could have launched more after it as well

@@frost7724 Mega stupid movie logic i guess. An Icbm wouldn't be able to track an aircraft in the first place. If it were to detonate upon contact with the aircraft, it would have eradicated it and caused a blast visible for miles upon miles.

The 747 has a central fuel tank which connects both port and starboard wings. I imagine if one side of the aircraft exploded then the engine on the other side would just ignite as well getting covered in fuel and other material from the wreckage.

Air Force One WOULD have reacted. The giant floor they have dedicated to communications and sensory arrays are not manned with sleeping employees. They are constantly on guard, observing, and at the ready. They are competent enough to deploy some form of counter measure before the missile impacts at a moment's notice.
The Guy I don't know whether they know, but there's a manoeuvre called the 'sacrifice' manoeuvre. (Ironic.) the jets escorting it would pull towards the missile, blocking it's trajectory. Do your research, CGI department.
There is also a method automatically built In which deploys flares to disrupt the missiles targeting and make it go after the flares, oh with that wasn't a heat seeking missile nevermind
Not a heat seeking SAM. That's an ICBM. Countermeasures wouldn't fool it. Though I doubt an ICBM is capable of hitting a plane at cruising speed...

sludgut There would be no countries measures on AF1 that would protect it against something like an ICBM, cause as the name suggests, it's an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, not a ground-to-air missile. I'm not sure how the missile managed to hit, but mostly likely, the onboard computers in the NORAD systems calculated the exact trajectory of AF1 and managed to hit it with pinpoint accuracy.
Though an ICBM would literally turn AF1 into a ball of frames, not just damage the fuselage and tear of the tail and with. The entire plane would explode instantly.

Why are so many people hating on the F 18s, they were escorting the plane and as soon as they saw that it was shot down by a missile they dumped flares and chaff while taking evasive action in case there were any other SAMs, they probably followed the jet all the way down.

Javier B I think they didn't have time to. The missile came from below and behind and was only in the air for a few seconds before impact. They wouldn't have time to reposition to try and sacrifice themselves.
