    2 games that Atlus localized for the GBA, that a lot more people should know about really, is Super Robot Wars OG and OG 2. They're spin off titles of a series called Super Robot Wars and can hold well on their own. The OG 1 and 2 are the only ones to be released in the U.S, but it did possibly open the door for people to get interested in the main series. Basically Mecha strategy game with a lot more depth in the gameplay than one would expect.

    That said, people still seem to forget that despite all the persona milking there is the etrian odyssey games that get also gets released by atlus. although not so obscure anymore but when it was on the ds it was. Best underrated Atlus game: Brigandine: Legend of Forsena. Strategy RPG back for the PS1.
    You choose from 1 of 6 different kingdoms each with unique characters, and basically build squads of monsters that they control. They all level up, there is a story for each kingdom. Game is played in two phases: the planning phase where you decide which castles to try to attack and reorganize your troops, and the battle phase where the actual combat takes place. It is actually getting a sequel that is coming out this year (Brigandine: Legend of Runersia), and I'm stupid excited about it. Probably one of my top played games of all time.

    If you haven't played Metal Saga, I'd recommend it. Atlus localized it for the PS2 around the end of its lifespan, and it's honestly kinda a blast. It's basically a turn-based RPG with a heavy emphasis on customization, exploration, and freedom, all with a premise that's basically a cross between Fallout, Terminator, and Monster Hunter kinda with Earthbound-esque humor and enemy designs. Basically, you play as a novice hunter, going out into the wasteland to kill big monsters for cash and help out people in need. Your progression in the game largely depends on your cash flow, more than how much experience you get as most of your combat is going to be done from within tanks instead of on foot, and the meat of your tank's power comes from the cash you've put into upgrading it and buying better parts, thus leading to a gameplay loop of "Kill boss for cash" ~> "Use cash for upgrades" ~> "Kill bigger boss for more cash" and so on and so forth. The plot, meanwhile, is nothing to write home about. For the most part, it kinda just takes a backseat to your adventure and all the little subplots you come across, which fits the game quite well really. The plot structure reflects the gameplay structure quite nicely. Not to mention, the music's really solid too. "Battle with the Wanted" is still one of my favorite boss tracks in any video game, and other great tracks from the game include Route 99, and Howl ~ The Past That Cannot Be. All in all, it's a really solid game to check out and a great time for anyone needing some good ol' fashioned escapism.

    @JustLou08 Před 4 lety

    One example of games that wouldn't have seen the light of day-or rather, wouldn't have made a miraculous comeback after all these years, is Brigandine. Its a tactical RPG developed originally by Hearty Robin and was oublished by Atlus for the PS1. It then had a Japan only version with new content which was published by a different company some time later, but it didn't exactly met the demands and thus fell into obscurity. But to this day it still has a small but very strong cult following and thanks to that, a new company was able to get the title and announce a new Brigandine game for the Switch. There's currently no news as to when it might release, or if it would be available for other consoles, but many fans of that series is hyped for the new title, including myself!

  • @Darkman9000
    @Darkman9000 Před 4 lety

    One of my favorites that Atlus published is Steambot Chronicles, a PS2 action role-playing title. One of its boxart reviewer descriptions stated "If Hayao Miyazaki made a sandbox game, it would probably look like this", and that's always been a very apt way of putting it if I do say so myself. You have the typical RPG plot hook: main character awakes with amnesia in a strange land, and ultimately has to save the day. The biggest draw was the mech-like machines the characters use, called "Trotmobiles", basically cars with legs and arms, which you could customize extensively with parts that you either purchased, found, or created from preexisting parts. The game also gave you choices that could alter certain events, though some choices had farther reaching results than others. It also had a rhythm section where you could play a selection of instruments ranging from a simple harmonica to the piano, and this tied into the game's vocal songs, which were pretty fun to listen to in my opinion, even if some of the lyrics had odd phrasing in them. There was even plans for a sequel on the PS3 at one point, though sadly they feel through when the developer, Irem, had to cancel a number of titles during the 2011 disaster in Japan. However, remnants of the team reformed to make a new company, Granzella, who recently released the 4th entry of the Disaster Report series, and are to release a new entry for the R-type series soon.

    Being a Vita owner, _Dungeon Travelers 2_ is a title that has been on my list of stuff to pick up. Last I saw it was still reasonably priced, but it's a platform I haven't exactly been in a rush to pick stuff up for since hardware prices skyrocketed. I could just play a title like this on the handheld, but I'd rather play on the PSTV and I just haven't been in a rush to pay the asking prices that have skyrocketed since the platform was hacked. It's in a genre that doesn't get all that much attention these days, but the Vita saw a bit of a resurgence of the genre and despite the fanservice elements, everything seems to indicate it's quite the good game.
