Tomato troubles

  • I take a look at some disappointing results from the tomato rootstocks and conclude that they aren't suitable for grafting this year. I also start the potting up of the scions as they were started in cell trays and I now need to grow them on.

    How frustrating for us both! I was looking forward to seeing this years grafting, and how the timings worked out. But 'hey' you still have the actual tomato plants you wanted, so not all is lost!

    Hi jonny that's a shame you won't be doing any grafting still atleast you still have plenty of tomato plants, great video mate have a great weekend

      Thanks! Yes, at this stage it's disappointing but not a disaster and they look a lot happier now they're in bigger pots :)

    What a shame, was looking forward to following these. I have had some awful germination rates this year with seeds from a particularly brand, waited two weeks only for 1 seedling to come up. Bought same variety from elsewhere and all have come up today from Saturday sowing. Really behind on tomatoes this year now due to this, complete lack of sunshine up here in the North East is not helping matters either

      It is so frustrating when that happens. Maybe I'm imagining it, but it does seem that the quality of some seed has declined in recent years. You're right about the weather - my peppers are looking small and sad this year, albeit from a later sowing than last season - hopefully some more regular warmth and sunshine will get things going soon...

    I potted on my tomatoes 🍅 yesterday (not grafted) and they all look like I sprayed them with ddt 😢😢, hopefully they will pick back up in a day or so. There is nothing more disheartening than a loss in our garden but don’t get me started on my tulips again 🤦🏼‍♀️. Hope you still have a pleasant week in the garden 👍, Alison 🇨🇦

      Oh dear :( They usually recover though, so I expect they'll perk up... I may have relayed this tale before, but when we first moved to our current home we planted hundreds of tulip bulbs. We hardly saw a flower, though, as we found that the rabbits consider the whole plant something of a delicacy and scoffed the lot. Each year a few brave survivors would struggle on but they rarely got to flower :(

      Thank you; they don't look too bad now I've potted them up - I think they'll be ok 😊

    Pot the extras on and sell them to offset garden costs. It let's me break even each year. 30C yesterday here, high of 4C today :)

      More weather madness! I suppose I could, but I expect I'll just give them away - I potted up some extras for friends :)

    You can take the uppermost part of the scion instead of the base to graft with once the rootstock is larger.

      You addressed more of what I mentioned after I wrote comment.

      It's not a bad idea if you can find a sufficiently round bit of stem, but the scions were just racing away this time. I think they might be in flower before the rootstocks are ready 😂

    You can still have a second shot the same spring as I did. I don't want to wait until next year so I graft 2-3 times until I succeed. :-) No matter how late in the season it is.

    • @jonnyskitchengarden
      @jonnyskitchengarden  Před rokem

      Yes, I could have sown another batch of scions but I decided to just pot them all on and will grow them on their own roots this year.

      @@jonnyskitchengarden How did it got for 2023 without the grafting?

    • @jonnyskitchengarden
      @jonnyskitchengarden  Před 4 měsíci

      They didn't do as well as previous grafted plants for yield (and probably size of fruit) and longevity, but they still did ok - they turned into nice plants. We had a lot of trouble with birds though, for the first time - they wrecked a lot of tomatoes and peppers - a couple of mad blackbirds I think 🤷‍♂

    Hard to understand aspects of our hobby sometimes, as frustrating as it is, there is always next year to try again.

    Why don't you just grow the toms on their original roots and try again next year or re sow new toms

      I am ever so sorry - I went to hit 'reply' and hit 'remove' by mistake - I hate this app! I don't know why there isn't an undo option :( Anyway, I did read it - and no worries - it's what happens with my long waffly videos 😂
