Yep I'm used to see red clean fluid. That needs a service.
Service due in about 10k miles. The mopar 8&9 speed trans fluid clear/grayish, not red.
Yes J.T mopar fluid is clear gray green.
K. Good to know I've worked on Asian automotive cars most of my career and stepped into domestic automobiles bout 1yr months ago so learning a lot from watching you guys taking in a lot of good tipms ha ha. So thanks for the vids.
Also I dont live too far from ze ef in graycourt sc.
Nope if ur transmission fluid ever gets this bad leave it alone
That's some dam fine looking fluid.
ZF 8hp's don't use red ATF
@@notSalaried Are you saying black is the recommended color?
It’s not black, it’s green. When you do a service you only get about 1/3-just under 1/2 the fluid out. The torque converter holds the rest. So when it mixes with the worn fluid it turns to a grey ish color. You go by the smell of it. You don’t want it to smell burnt.
black fluid life's matter
Well it was full....now its a lil bit low
😅😅😅
😂😂
😅😅😅😅
😂😂😂
Yes
Don't you just love engineers used to take 5 seconds with no lift to check oil
Everyone saying the fluid is dirty and not red. It is 8&9 speed ZF trans fluid, it is not red, it is a dark green/brown fluid that cost $35-$40 a quart. The fluid is fine. However you do check it between 86 and 120 degrees F. When it's at operating temp it could appear over filled. Even if it's not.
That fluid should be green not red. Suppose to check around 110-115° for proper lever. All depending on what make of vehicle it is in. Because it is in alot of makes and models, my friends!
Yes, but who said it should be red? 8&9 speed Chrysler version trans fluid greenish. This fluid a lil dark but I plan to service it during the next oil change. And yes it was just driven and still running so its def at the required temp.
@@OnlineMechanicTips I’m guessing you’ve grown tired of explaining this 😂
@@OnlineMechanicTipshould be checking fluid level on zF trans cold usually while engine on after running through gears. The fluid expands quickly
Everyone is saying the fluid is dirty… reading is fundamental people… the 8speed trans fluid is dark green and not your typical orange/red trans fluid
With the German cars that use th ZF transmission you have to check the fluid with the trans temp not fully warmed up, supposedly it makes a difference
You are correct, about 140F see my channel
Well there’s a certain temperature range you’re supposed to check it at. If you check while it’s too warm it will overflow even if it’s low
uhhh what? no. operating temperature is where you want it.
Es the rams it says 30 to 50 degrees Celsius or 86 to 122 Fahrenheit.
Remember when there was ONE type of fluid and dipsticks? Better. My '07 Jeep Liberty doesn't leak a drop all summer, but I store it during winter and it leaks ALOT. How much? No idea...because it's a pain to check.
A VERY respected transmission shop told me leakage during long-term storage is a "Chrysler thing", but offered no solutions. Going to try and collect the fluid this winter, measure it, and add that amount in spring.
This is my same concern and issue since my tranny is dipstickless and considering I’m getting drips more often now since I replaced the half housing of my tranny due to damaged EBay sent me. Well I figured to ease my concern on this is just changed my trans fluid every 15K miles from now on. This way to insure myself to avoid low fluid and benefit my manual tranny on smooth shifting from now on.
Glorious red fluid. Will work well fir thousands of miles.
Now all i need to do is buy a lift so i can check it.
You sure that wasn't your engine oil? Cuz that's oil was black black
When it's running isn't it going to pump the fluid out of the hole anyway? Not sure but of the fluid comes out when the engines not running it's full.
Amazon sells a dipstick for the equinox.
Black fluid! Half of it came out when u opened it! 😮
I'm so happy my truck has the 65rfe and not the 8hp, God what a nightmare
Lol, they not to bad.
The ZF 8spd is actually really really good. My buddy is a Master Mopar tech, he has one in his RAM. He loves hauling/towing with it. He swears by it. He doesn't seem them in with many issues either.
They are good transmissions until you have to check fluids on certain models. Exhaust tends to be right in the way. Can be a pain lol
You need a fluid and filter change fluid is black as burnt motor oil
That is daaaaarrrrkkk
.
It’s a clear fluid when new lol.
I rebuilt an zf8hp on an Audi
Fluid looks dark time for a change
This Mopar 8&9 speed trans fluid. When new its clear/dark. Service do every 60K. It will be time again in about 10k miles
@@OnlineMechanicTips ya i use the 8 and 9 speed fluid a lot lol i have a 200 and a pacifica
Never change ur transmission fluid if it's dark leave it alone
@@w.e.s. You must sell transmissions to believe the crap you're saying
@@twiztid6977420 I don’t know about dark, but if it’s been long enough, and you’re well over 100k and it’s never been changed, I’ve heard plenty of mechanics say to not change it. Is the one and only Scotty Kilmer wrong?
Hmmm there’s fluid but it sure looks dark! I’d replace & filter if there’s one accessible!? Ouch!😮😅
Where do you add fluid, if you need to? Through the same opening?
Yes
Dang...that thing needs a flush asap 😮
I just bought a used ram 1500 at a auto auction and checked the levels on the transmission and nothing came out the bolt hole 🕳️ I check the levels says transmission heat is 30-60c I think I need to top it no leaks or nothing???
Probably should have checked it before you drive it and went thru the gears
What size is that plug
It varies from trans to trans. They not all the same allen size
Ok first off I watch all your stuff man thank you for posting. Second, I have a 14 Nissan versa fwd with the crap trans in it. My ex wife drove it hard and didn't maintain like she was telling me she was. Since we split I've been using it as my daily driver and Its not quite slipping but shifting hard. Sealed trans. I work in a lube shop and do actual mechanic work on the weekend but I'm not a trans guy. I want to do what you've done here to my trans to check things out ad see what my fluid looks like to try and figure out when it actually got serviced. Is there any reason you can think of that I SHOULD NOT try this? Thanks so much this vid got me hyped thinking I can get something figured out for my own ride I've been debating it in my own head and asking around for a minute! Big fan- Corey
I've often been told not to drain a trans that is starting to slip, because the metallic contents of the fluid help it grip. This is mainly why I haven't yet, like I said I'm not a trans guy.
Im thinking this year model had the CVT trans in it. You can actually do a service on those. Heres what I want you to do. My Nissan Master Tech buddy can tell you for sure. Head over to his channel and subscribe to his channel and jump on any video and ask him this same question. Hes a good dude. I want to no this my self. @Fluffy Mexichanik czcams.com/channels/jU-L5I84c897zMldIYKRrg.html Tell him JT sent you, thanks
@@coreybooton7346 first and foremost...do you have a check engine light? If so get it scanned, some dealer depending where your at will run a scan for you (not a diagnosis) for free but certain codes for the trans will not set a light but will set a code that only dealers can see...but u can check the fluid level like this by popping the 19mm plug when its hot...it should have a decent steady drip...if not then add only ns3 fluid by popping the cap off the minuture dipstick tube...hard to get to so i usually unbolt it take the cap off then install the tube back on to fill it...on these we only drain and fill which is fine, will not hurt but usually when customers request this on their own its usually because theres an under lying issue as to why i say to get it scanned...but like i said at least checking the fluid level will at least eliminate a fluid level concern...and if u really want to drain it stick a 5mm allen into the drain hole and theres a pipe that will back out that actually levels the fluid and let it drain out...if any other questions like j.t. said head over to the channel
@@OnlineMechanicTips big thanks for the referall 🤝
@@FluffyMexicanik ok thank you I honestly spend less time under my own hood than I do for any customers. None of my local guys have known much about these trans so thank you kindly! Yes it is the cvt trans if I'm not mistaken I've overlooked that tube ( honestly hadn't a clue wether it had one or not) we have got a GOOD scan tool in my shop, I'm guessing it won't read code or not. I have a check light that comes on time to time and goes back out on its own, but it only comes on or off after I've filled up on gas so that tells me it has probably nothing to co with the tranny. Tha ks guyc!
Can you do this cold and just let it drop out the fill plug???

Change the fluid that is dirty as $hit
Due in about 10k more miles. Fluid not red my friend.
Hey man, i have 2018 grand cherokee with 100k km, never changed the transmission oil
Should i change it or it’s a bad idea?
It needs to be checked while running.
uhmmm, it is running. Didnt you hear me say that?
2002 Ford f150 5.4 litet is there a drain plug ? I think there's too much fluid in it but can't find any info anywhere. Thanks
Did you just tighten the nut with just hand?
Nah, only got 60 seconds so there may be some things done thats not seen.
@@OnlineMechanicTips right
Looks like it needs a flush
silly rabbit, did you check transmission atmospheric vent tube?
tranny fluid should not flow out of that port. if vent tube is plugged it will.
How do I refill
How do you refill the transmission

Look like black coffee running out, not cherry red!!
Hi I'm new at this stuff so what do you mean by zf 8hp is it like transmission model? And do everything have that type of name?
I'm sorry If you think its a stupid question 😅
Zf being the name of the manufactures and 8 is the number of gear, this is an zf8hp70 to be exact. The 70 refers to the strength of the trans. It goes from zf8hp30 being on 300 horse power rating all the way to zf8hp95 that the hellcat issues rated for about 900 horse.
@@billybobaggins8820 thanks man that was really informative!!!!
@@billybobaggins8820 there was someone in comment section mentioning 65rfe what would that mean?
@@rage_breaker1266 just searching them yourself is the best way to learn. Rfe just described the trans type and application 65 is the rating once again
@@billybobaggins8820 alright man thanks!!!
Was full....was😂
thats too much fluid right?
Technically that was way too much.. between certain temperatures ram states it should dribble out.. not flow that much.. there is way too much fluid in there
@Chris-wk7xq no its because the temperature is way to high for the fluid test procedure once temperature is at 120f or higher you should not check because it will pour out regardless
Another engineering nightmare
Why the hell would they design a transmission with no dipstick. Wow 😣.
Do y'all also have zf transmissions that takes the green trans fluid that stinks like cat piss? Seriously it smells horrible.
Naw, I think mercedes uses that on there version
@@OnlineMechanicTips interesting, that stuff smells worse than burnt gear oil to me. Thanks for the reply, be blessed, stay safe out there! The field can be hard on your body.
Does that mean that Honda pilot zf 9 speed transmission has no dipstick? I've been searching for weeks.
Lots of new vehicles dont. If you go to service it and you know the vehicle history and its not leaking, the best thing to do is measure the amount of old fluid you remove during a service, then replace with the same amount of fluid at thw same temperature. They took the dipsticks away in part because many new trans fluids expand and contract in volume with temperature
It does not, it has a check plug on the driver side near the axle. It should take a hex to remove. Drain plug on bottom, fill plug on top beside the zf plate. Usually about 3.5 quarts for a drain and fill of Honda type 3.1 fluid.

Damn that shit was black maybe ummm idk drop the pan change the filter and refill it ..... Js I love Chrysler but the transmission is usually a weak link on most of them... Speak of transmissions JT I have a manual 2005 pt gt convertible the. Are is tuned and makes a touch over 350 HP to front tires .. have a built automatic transmission in the garage that is good for about 500 HP can I swap out the manual throw in the automatic transmission plug up the wire harness and go or do I have to have the ECU programed for the auto ? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated brother... I can't see spending 1200 on a stage 2 south bend clutch when I have a 3000 dollar racing tranny with the wire harness.
