  • @kimmlisa

    Hi! Thank you so much for your awesome videos. I am taking a class right now on Theories and Teachings of Literature and we are reading about all of these different theories including Psychoanalysis. I am a bit confused though since you did comment on someone that psychoanalysis is different to psychological criticism...Because what I read in my book is similar to what you're saying in the video...But my main question is that I currently have to write a research paper on any literary/critical theory on any literary text and I have chosen to write about "Frankenstein" using psychoanalysis. Would you have any tips as to how I could approach this? I don't even know my thesis yet either, so therefore am quite lost, to be honest. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

    • @Nancenotes
      @Nancenotes  Před 5 lety +2

      I suppose psychoanalysis as you're seeing it means simply applying psychoanalysis to a character in a book, which I would consider a subcategory of psychological criticism, but could I guess be used somewhat interchangeably.
      Are you intending to psychoanalyze Frankenstein or the monster? Both are interesting because each has complex and even conflicting motives for their actions. You could focus on Victor's obsessive work habits, or the desire for love and the complexity of relationships. How about Oedipal complexes stemming from being rejected by a father? Or, of course, you could blend a little historical criticism in and psychoanalyze Mary Shelley. How much of the monster story is a reaction to her deteriorating relationship with her husband? There are many options. A good place to start would be to list all the possible psychological issues you see and then pick one that interests you and has interesting implications. Good luck!

    • @kimmlisa
      @kimmlisa Před 5 lety

      Thank you so much for your reply! I have decided to analyze Victor but took the route of how the monster is his "dark double" and then will compare and contrast them both. I will be talking about Victor's obsessiveness and definitely the Oedipus complex about his childhood! Currently in the making since the draft is due next Monday.

      You might read Kohlberg's book of essays: Kohlberg, Lawrence (1981). Essays on Moral Development, Vol. I: The Philosophy of Moral Development. San Francisco, CA: Harper & Row.
      Also, you should look at his use of the Heinz Dilemma. Good luck on your thesis project!

      Ah! True! And I just suggested him for archetypal study to a student. Oh, well! Yes, Melville is very interesting, psychologically. I'd say Moby Dick is much more psychologically driven than plot driven.

      Melville was a sailor first Moby Dick and Billie Budd just reek of that POV. I am enjoying your classroom I never had any formal English Lit after HS. Hi :D My question is, is there a difference between psychological criticism and psychoanalytic criticism? Thank you.

    • @Nancenotes
      @Nancenotes  Před 6 lety +2

      Yes. I would say psychological criticism is generally using psychology to study literature, whereas psychoanalytical crit is specifically using psychoanalysis to study the subconscious of the characters. It's more specific and related to the balance of the Id, Ego and Superego, as discussed by Freud. This video only introduces the use of psychology generally.
