Most of the comments i've seen, have the blame given to Hinata for Neji's death when Neji ran and got in the way of the attack to protect Naruto and Hinata. And besides with out Kurama's chakra no one would have been able to stop the ten-tails attack. Maybe just Naruto, but noone else could have. Without the aid of Kurama chakra they all would have died! But with the aid of Kurama and Naruto's belief they were able to hold there own. And not as many died as should have

✓ To teach Naruto a lesson that no matter what he said, his comrades will die
✓ To prevent Naruto chasing Sakura anymore
Even though is supported the pairing, that's not a reason to kill off Neji. It's like saying "to make them closer, this "obstacle" must be eliminated".

the plan by shikaku centered around Naruto as the key a she was the strongest and all they had at the time and obviously no one else can fight the ten tails and hinata cant live in a world without Naruto so the plan was to keep Naruto alive....so hinata protected him with her life ..neji protected her with his life...he owed her.....he almost killed her at the chunnin exams, ruined her confidence by beating her mentally emotionally physically in sparring as a little kid for 9 years and he wasn't there for her vs pain cause he was out of the village and didnt make it in time...he kind of owed her....he promised he would protect her and for many years yet didn't...he finally fulfilled his promise...
