The Killing Joke is about Jack becoming Joker, not Jack becoming a criminal mastermind. He obviously had time to become who he is after that but that's not the point of the book. It's just his origins and the one bad day he's trying to create for Gordon. It doesn't explain or want to explain why he's so good because that's not why this story exists. You can't say it doesn't make sense.

This was an important milestone for comic book films. For myself, and a whole generation of moviegoers in the late 80s. There had never been a Batman on film, or Joker, that represented the look of the early comics or the dark graphic novels that inspired Burton's vision. All we had seen before was the campy 60's version. 1989 was the 50th anniversary of the Batman comics. The timing, the casting, the haunting and music score by Danny Elfman. The first time we ever saw the batsuit in all black. The freaking batmobile was amazing, and still the best to this day. Nolan's movies are great, Snyder's vision of Batman is also great. This was and will always be the template. The original. The first blockbuster/ dark, comic book film. Give credit where credit is due and watch it. watch it in the dark with the volume loud. Always a fun experience for true bat-fan's. R.I.P. Prince. Bat-dance is still one of my favorite music videos. I hope you're Bat-dancing in heaven.

Its the center of the past and the future of Batman.
The perfect balance of the mainstream and the hardcore Batman fans, fantasy and science fiction. Stayed true to the original vision of its creator Bob Kane - which is very important for me as an author.
Nolan's take is just a dissection and modernization of the 1989 movie's theme of "fear of freaks".

The Tim Burton movies are simply closer to the Batman mythos and what the characters are. they defined Batman for damn near 3 generations, and helped give Nolan a reference point for his trilogy. the Nolan movies aren't "better" in terms of story or character; they have better effects and DO explain backgrounds in more detail, but ultimately, they do less with more. Also, hey were MADE for an "edgier" time, so its to be expected that they have a more modern day appeal. Burton's movie is a classic, and has aged very well, even to this day

Actually, I"m going to go with Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin in the t.v. series GOTHAM. But then, we've gotten to know him pretty well. Same with Selina Kyle, the catwoman to be, in the same show. In movies however I did adore Keith Ledger's Joker as well as Danny DeVito's Penguin, the latter for being such a total Tim Burton take on the character.

He didn't need to use cheap props that are actually deadly weapons, although it was pretty cool when he did that, but Ledger actually freaking killed people and his weapon of choice was real methods of killing (guns, explosions, etc.) but doing it in a way that showed a hilariously dark irony to life. He is the Joker without sugar coating for children

I just saw this one for the first time yesterday, and candidly, I was incredibly underwhelmed. So many of my friends have said this portrayal of Batman and the Joker were their favourites, but I personally didn’t see anything special about either of them. Jack Nicholson did a great job, but he played Jack Nicholson in joker makeup. And I found Michael Keaton’s character to be bland and uninteresting. I found the story, while fun, predictable. I liked how Tim Burton developed the city of Gotham, but overall I think the movie came across as kind of campy. I really wanted to like this movie, but I was disappointed. I’d rate it a 6/10. That being said, I understand why people absolutely love this movie, and I can respect the influence it subsequently had on batman films.

Tim Burton's movies were filled with subtle details that gave you more plot than you think, meanwhile Nolan beat us over the head with shitty exposition and foreshadowing. For example Eckhardt (dirty cop) said to Jack "Where have you been spending your nights" in an alley before he became the Joker. It sounds like a throwaway but think about it, that explains so much.

They're movies that don't deserve the hate they do but now, there's a (Lets hate on this) bandwagon that know one knows why they join it but they do to the point where it becomes public opinion and if you say otherwise, you become the target of extreme ridicule for appreciating a good story. I'm not saying I love the prequels but the hate they get is absurd and the hate people get for admitting they like it is absurd. Why is joker's unimpressive gun able to shoot down the batwing? why is one henchman almost able to beat batman in a fistfight in the cathedral? Why do batman and Alfred remind each other that Vicki vale is special if she doesn't do anything to prove it? Since when does any version of the joker fall in love with a woman other than Harley? why is Bruce kind of awkward and unstable? I actually really like this movie I just never understood these questions.

This will always be MY Batman. Nolan's Batman is fine, but it's not my Batman. This movie has everything I want it to be. Good action, good dialogue, awesome production design, and a twisted sense of humor that really NEEDS to be in something as insanely silly as Batman inherently is. I mean, a guy dressing up as a bat to fight crime is a pretty damn silly idea at its heart. Nolan's films don't feel like Batman movies; they feel like excellent crime thrillers with Batman in them. Enjoyable enough, but I will always prefer the more campy, but still also serious enough, take on the genre. That's why I'm excited to see Suicide Squad. It seems to have the same kind of idea in mind.

Do you realize that Batman's entire conception lies in the crime genre? The sole reason why he became Batman is because he was a victim of crime, and even one of his best pals is a FUCKING police officer. He was inspired by noir heroes like The Shadow and Dick Tracy. So yeah, excuse Nolan movies for being crime movies. Because, you know, the last time when Batman movies tried to move away from the crime aspect of the character, they were so good, right?

I disagree. I feel Bale took Batman to Frank Miller territory: memorable, compelling, but hardly interesting or nuanced. Bale never intimidated me the way Keaton did, and Keaton is the only live-action Batman who could actually smile and still be cool. Bale always seemed a little lost and confused, and with the number of times he got tricked in the Nolan movies, he just doesn't leave as good an impression as Michael Keaton or Kevin Conroy, who were always in control of a situation.

Favourite Villain - Scarecrow from TAS final season. The redesign with the noose around his neck and the dots for eyes were just terrifying.

  • @akeeperofoddknowledge4956

The 1989 Batman was about Batman just starting out. He'd only made a few rooftop appearances before Commissioner Gordon spotted him and he didn't know if Batman was a good guy or a bad guy.
Michael Keaton's suit in that movie is my favorite! Body armorcthat mimicked human muscles and the mask was perfect! The neck Claire's out to the shoulders and regardless how impractical that was - the effect was fantastic - and that is what the bat suit was all about - the effect!
The BATMOBILE in that movie was totally awesome! You knew it belonged to Batman at first glance! While the Nolan BATMOBILE DID cool things and looked cool - it did not look like the proprietary equipment Batman had. It looked like what it was - a military vehicle repurposed for Batman.
And while I love the way Nolan's Batman used his cloak to glide ( meat in did for a few seconds in his second Batman movie) through the air, something I thought Batman should have done since I was a kid.
Also, the Nolan Batman identified Batman. We saw how his gear was created and while interesting it destroyed the mystery.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Nolan movies better than any of the others, but I will give points to the 1989 version for the reasons I stated.

Not really. They are outstanding movies but they did not get eh characters "right", especially Batman. The Joker was a different take but one for the better since it was just a really good performance. Batman wasnt much of a detective, didnt use much of the usual utility belt stuff but more things he had to use for special cases and he was never shown to have the genius intelect were used to having. Dont get me started on the voice, how short he is and how physically unimposing he was. Bane was also a very different take. I like Bane especially when he talked and was straight up a badass but it didnt feel like Bane but more of a new villain.
Like I said the Movies are great and I love them but they didnt get the characters "right", not like it mattered much because of how awesome the movies were especially TDK aka Joker so it didnt really harm them much.

I gotta say this you have to give credit to the Tim Burton Batman's well just the 1st one, at the time that's all we had as a darker Batman aside from the comics, of course your are gonna like the Nolan Batman because maybe you saw them first, but I'm not sure if you did, as far as the comics some was different and some were the same, although the joker has many different origins in the comic book the killing joke he did fall into a vat of chemicals, but he never murder Bruce's parents. Everyone has there own interpretation from comics and movies, and as far as the cartoon goes well Batman animated series was base on the Tim Burton's Batman from the music to the setting and tone on how dark the cartoon was. You are entitled to your own opinion but you gotta give him some credit.

    1) Michael Keaton is the better Batman. No throat cancer. No DUH face. And my most important reason: He's the only Batman that can smile and still look threatening.
    2) In the Dark Knight everything was analyzed.
    3) It was more smooth flowing and had that long shot of the bat mobilize

Slade Wilson/Deathstroke and his portrayal on Arrow is my second favourite. The Joker always wins hands down but that's a given just based on the characters nature and the actors who play the character. Although, yes my favourite live action creation is Manu Bennett as Slade/Deathstroke. The progression was truly captivating for me

Two-Face from the 92 animated series is my favorite Batman villain. Even though I love the Burton Batman movies the most, I did like Nolins take on Two-Face. I just wish they gave him more screen time as Two-Face. He reminded me a lot of the animated series one.

Well this batman and the dark knight have a lot in common, most of it being joker and joker batman scenes. Two of the most obvious ones are the joker talks to the mobster leaders around a table (both Nicholson and ledger did the same thing), and batman and the joker have a confrontation where batman is coming at him at high speed and crashes (Keaton was in the batwing, and Bale was on the bat pod).

1989 ... I was 11. I'd just started secondary school and I remember how weird it was having a 'dark' Batman ... We'd only had the TV series before this. What a time to be witness to it.

@@guileniam It was utterly mindblowing. To go from Saturday morning TV of Adam West's show (Whaack ... KaPow ... Boom ... etc popping onto the screen during every fight) to this was incredible. I still remember watching it for the first time today.
