- Today I'm showing you how I am restoring my truck's lubricity in it's differential by doing a commonly overlooked maintenance item and that's changing out the gear oil in the rear differential.

Awesome video, no BS and to the point. Great job thank you.
Even if using a paper gasket, you still need a light coating of RTV. If not, there is a high chance of a leak developing. I know from first hand experience.
I can definitely see it helping, but I have yet to have a leak just letting the gasket do it's job. Maybe I'm just lucky!
Bought the factory oil, but a cheap Felpro gasket. 😂. The Gm silicone gaskets GM has for the 6l80's are really nice and reusable although I would alway swap in a fresh one while Im there. The added price is cheap insurance. If I have parts I replace and the original was good, ill keep them in my plan B parts bins. Im keeping my truck till I can't glue the rust back together anymore. 😂😂
Very well explained thank you!
You can still add fluid through the vent if the filler fails
Thanks a lot for the information very concise and to the point 👍
Your diff cover is missing the magnet which you should install.
I will never use 80w90 or 75w90 again. Its meant for tiny fuel economy gain.
It you tow, haul go at least 75w110. High quality 100% synthetic is a must...
?
Well done , thanks. Why don't any of the other uploaders drain the fluid before they remove the cover? I've watched 2 or 3 other videos and they don't even mention a drain plug, they just remove the cover
I'm guessing some people prefer to just pull off the diff cover because it's either faster OR most people are afraid their drain plug is seized to the diff housing I guess haha 😂 I'm glad the video helped! 😁
There is no drain plug.
Yes mine doesn't have a drain plug!
Many older vehicles didn't have drain plugs. They may just be doing it how they are used to
Even newer 12-14 bolt GM do not have drain plugs either just a fill plug in the front of the diff
What a nice video.
High quality video
the way videos should be made !
How many liters did the differential carry?
2.7
Never say simple tell done my diff im praying i can get the plug out next week end
True 😂 I mean, one stuck bolt can turn a simple job into a headache
My rear diff blew week-half ago… easy to fix but Daam rebuild kit is pricey. Was the driver side bearings and the pinion bearings as well. Have to replace the ring and pinion gear as well🤦🏻♂️
Ouch! That's rough! Yeah they are pretty pricey 😬
Hey thanks for the time n effort making the video ! Can you tell me was yours the G80 posi locker 3.73 or 4.10 ??? thats whats in my 05 gmc sierra 1500. Btw I couldn't see or feel a drain bolt under mine lol
It's a 3.73 :) I have the GT4 code in my list of RPOs :) I updated the title of the video so it includes it! Thanks! :) and no drain bolt? That's odd! Even though they're considered the same truck, they did change some things from 2000 to 2005! Thanks for the call out!
@@ufixitauto5237 i may have missed the drain bolt. Now that you mention it i think it remember seeing gt4 in my glove box rpo list as well. So yours is the G80 locker ? Just to be clear.
@@ufixitauto5237 ok just googled GT4 is the 3.73 ratio code lol learn something new every day 😄
The more you know 😉 my RPO codes do not list G80 anywhere though, so I'm probably going to say that my truck does not have a G80 😅 if you have a posi G80, then you need to add that limited slip additive
@@ufixitauto5237 actually they say not to put in additives. The ac delco 75-90 gl5 is what a G80 P locker takes and it has just the right amount in it. I'm just hoping I missed the drain bolt for less mess.
👍
Are those 373 gears , “ stock gears “???
I have gmc sierra year 2000 v8 4.8 … would i have the same gear ratio
Yes they are stock gears and I have no idea haha. There should be a tag somewhere on the truck to let you know what gears you are equipped with.
Look at your door or glovebox for a placard called Service Parts Identification. There should be RPO codes there that tell you what your car is equipped with from factory.
If you have a 2wd truck more than likely it will have 3:73 gears, 4wd truck have a 4:10 gear ratio and have either a 12-14 bolt rear diff
Where did you dispose of the old gear oil?
Local auto parts store 😁
@@ufixitauto5237 thank you! 👌🏽
Burn it with the trash. Some good smoke for the neighbors picnic!
Don't know why you went to the trouble of removing the cover especially if it wasn't even leaking. Looks like the gasket sealer the previous person used was the black colored Right Stuff which is as good if not better than an actual gasket in these applications. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
Some people don't have a drain plug so their only option is to drain it by removing the cover.
My 04 Silverado has no drain plug just a fill plug 👎😮
Then you gotta pop off that diff cover most likely haha
Most of them don’t. I wish GM would’ve taken a note from Toyota there
