Pink Floyd is Legendary! This song was written in 1972, 50 years ago, (I was 16 years old att), and it still holds up today as good as ever, maybe even more so! All Pink Floyd songs are like that, works of art. And the lyrics of this song,... impressive to say the least, especially when you realize it was written by guys in their mid 20s, very insightful young men. Incredible!
I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan since this album came out in 1973, the "Dark Side of the Moon" album. That album went 14 X Platinum, and sold over 50 million copies to date, (and still counting), and it spent 962 weeks on Billboards Top LP's of all time, that's over 18 years! Again, incredible.

"I bet all of the sounds mean something." Yes, you are correct... the "pendulum" is the ticking of a clock (thus the song title), while at the same time there is a heartbeat sound. A very simple-to-grasp musical explanation that your pulse is like a ticking clock and that one thing that definitely unites us all is the same, unstoppable progression of time. As others have pointed out in the comments, this song definitely hits you deeper as you get older.

I believe the message is: time precious, life is short, don't waist a day, an hour, a minute of it. Because if will eventually come to its end, so use it as much as you can, the best you can. But the way the lyrics are written is just ingenious, so deep, so abstract. A perfection.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Scott Page” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.

Sittin' here, sippin on my cuervo, watching this...as you sippin' and listening to my music, and talking about being in HS music programs...just like me. Just like me. Thousands of miles apart. Generations apart. But you bring us all together. Music is magic, because it can do this. Hello, Brother. We ARE one. Thank you for your post.

Thanks for articulating this song so we'll.
like you,I have a 25 year old daughter, who sadly self harmed recently within an inch of her young life.
I made me me stand back and evaluate my own life and my journey,I am in bad health due to work accident and now i feel the true meaning to this song.
to me,it's about life is short,we only have a short time here, and making the most of our lives is so important, especially our family and loved ones.

Dark Side of the Moon is an album best listened to in its entirety. To that end, I recommend this: czcams.com/video/R6tYeg5Bj4g/video.html
It is the full audio/visual experience for that album. Definitely give that a watch, as the videos accompanying the songs really bring them to life.
Edit: Also, you should check out the entire "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii" concert. They played a live show for an audience that had been dead for nearly two millennia.

Got you!! Once that moment hits where you realise that "what you're listening to, means soo much more than what you're hearing" You will forever listen to Pink Floyd in a totally different way. There are so many poignant lyrics and amazing musical qualities in their music that sit you on right your ass when you least expect it..... Enjoy the ride!!

Amen to what you're saying about it never being too late. I'm 63, a late bloomer for sure, and I'm still actively doing the work I love, never giving up on my dreams. The only thing that'll stop me is death, is the way I feel. And even as a ghost I'll still be doing what I love, lol. And yes, this is a great song. This is one of the first albums I ever bought with money I earned as a dishwasher back in 1976.

What's really a trip is to listen to songs for three decades. And one day it sounds brand new all over again bro,i was a musician first half of my life. When this occured with me i told a long time band member this. And his reaction was wow man i know"! But what i mean by that is the message is the same words but means something else all of a sudden ! As you are a different person now than you were then.. . Profound !
    The real artificer of music
His words will have meaning to each individuals life . Interpreted
    In many many ways.

My all time Favorite Floyd song. One day I was at the mall with my kids and went into the Bose store I was sampling some of the equipment and this was one of the test songs I cranked that baby up as high as I could The manager came running out of the back expect to see a bunch of kids and laughed when he saw the thirtysomething-year-old with two toddlers jamming out.😂🤙

The Floyd experience is 3-fold IMO. The stage show, the music and lyrics. If you hear a PF song for the 1st time in a live performance, the visuals and the music could distract you from absorbing the lyrics. You can be excused for that.

I had this explained to me about this song.
The clocks and bells at the beginning is your birth. The "tolling of the iron bell' at the end is your funeral.
Do not let your life get closer to the end before you "wake up" to see it has passed you by.
That really drove the point deep.
