- There have been a number of films and television dramas set against the background of the English Civil War, but are any of them historically accurate? Cromwell Museum Curator Stuart Orme looks at some of the best known and most interesting films and TV dramas set in this tumultuous period of history.
Yes, I agree the film 'Cromwell' is historical tosh, but the war is so complicated, that without the re-write it would have been a 3 day film. And you can see that the writer is trying to convey the spirit of certain events and wrapping them all around one central character. It is also the film that got me into a life-long passion for the war and the political events surrounding it.
by the sword divided is here on U

Good vid. You should put the films in the description
Amen about how you describe TV-documentaries. I would say "not always historically accurate" is far too kind, more like 'almost never accurate, honest or really valuable at all' (apart from "entertainment"). Which is why videos like this is a much much better alternative and it's why i'm watching this :)
Superb soundtrack in "By the Sword Divided!"
Brilliant!! Many of these moves I have never seen before!!!
Thank you Stuart, I shall keep an eye out, but would be looking for a recommended book on the Civil War and Cromwell's part in it. Will speak soon.
The trial of the king killer's
Oh I love Fairfax in Winstanley the most! He's so cute in it.🥰
You left out Blackadder: The Cavalier Years, with Robbie Coltrane
Ah, that was Warren Clarke who played Cromwell 😁, Robbie only ever played The Christmas Spirit in the Christmas one
I love Forever Amber which is set in the period. It's very 50s Hollywood but marvellous!
This is great! Could you also do a video about good books to read about Oliver Cromwell and the Civil Wars?
That's a good idea - we'll look in to that!
Very interesting Stuart. Did you ever get to see Hex (2017)?
A good defence of the indefensible, Stuart. Oliver would have been proud of you! The film is a complete travesty of historical accuracy from start to finish and should have been left in the cutting room in its entirety. More comedy than history, Sid James could have played Oliver and Charles Haughtry as himself.
"Carry On Cavaliers & Roundheads".
PS Thanks for the tea towel.
