Thor dipping when kratos got angry is very canon to the real Thor
Thor is basically a coward bully, he goes and fucks up everyone who he can easily fight but when someone shows up with equal or superior strength he dips
I think part of it also could be he wanted to see if the supposed god of war who killed his sons actually lived up to all that infamy.
That way he could at least know, to some degree, that Magni and Modi put up a hell of a fight against the killer of the gods.
Cause he repeatedly kept expressing his disbelief that Kratos killed his sons during the fight, but when Kratos lets loose and hits him at the end Thor feels vindicated, and I guess it maybe gives him some peace to know Magni and Modi fought Kratos and held their own before they died.
