South Korea’s Dog Cloning Industry

  • Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is hard. Lamech Lai, a Taiwanese botanist, artist, and spiritual teacher, became convinced that his dog wanted to be reborn after death. That led him to find Sooam Biotech, a Korean company that clones dogs. Helmed by controversial researcher Dr. Hwang Woo-suk, the lab charges $100,000 per clone.
VICE News travels to Korea and Taiwan to follow the dog cloning process, and examine a business that pushes the frontiers of science, as well as the limits of bioethics.

@Gia Gia I respect his love and he seems like a sweet guy. But to claim to be a Buddhist spiritual teacher and pool $100,000 from his friends so he can clone his dead dog seems to go against very basic Buddhist teachings of impermanence & non-attachment. It’s a bit more of a stretch, but the fact that he projects this desire onto the dog indicates he doesn’t know his own mind either.

    • @tapiocamango

You're right. After all, to clone is not cloning the same being/soul/spirit of a dog. All spirits are unique in that they are their own being. Cloning may achieve the same front but it does not resurrect the original being that passed away. It's like identical twins, for example: They look the same but they are two different people. I do find it dishonorable, let alone unethical.

The guy who 'resurrects his dog; lives in a pretty impressive house yet he needs to borrow money from his 'family' and also get a %50 discount somehow. And all of his 'students' wear the same clothing and are all women. I get the vibe that the guy is a cult leader more than a spiritual teacher.
And the scientist, you know, fakes results of his morally and ethically questionable research, gets disowned by his scientific community, and becomes disgraced but somehow manages to avoid further repercussions. Founds a company, doing morally and ethically even more questionable things in a secluded and niche area of his profession. And he also looks down on his past. I mean, this is any evil scientist from any superhero/sci-fi story. And as a bonus, he does his work for ridiculous amounts of money and for people emotionally disturbed by the loss of their companion.
And the man shaking his head in 7:23, I wonder, is he the future owner of the puppy being delivered, watching an innocent animal undergo unnecessary suffering because he wants his next pet to have the same genes as his past dog.
Surrogate dogs don't seem very well cared for even in the video. And what happens to the puppies born with defects? Shelter? Street? Outright killed? What? And how doesn't a decent journalist asks this question? Forget about the journalist, how a decent human being with a conscience doesn't ask this? Shame on you!

I say it is much better to cherish the memories of a past pet, let go, and adopt from a shelter, or take a pet in off of the street. People who are thinking about cloning should take in, care for, and help another life rather than spend so much time and money trying to make a copy of a pet they have lost when that copy will not truly be the same. I feel that cloning is not needed at all and can actually become a disadvantage and negative by way of actually taking potential homes away from pets that are in shelters and in bad situations who need a good home as well as taking business away from breeders who breed. There are plenty of pets which are in shelters or in bad situations that would make wonderful pets if only more people would give them a chance. Also, since the creature that will be cloned is going to be different anyway, you might as well help out a different pet that will be able to fill the gap in your life in a much more cost effective way. You could even adopt multiple pets for the price of cloning one and still have enough money left over to care for and maintain those pets you helped save.

And then the dogs giving birth, nursing them, caring for them and getting attached to the puppies just to have the ripped away from them. It's even possible that the mother dogs realize that the puppies don't smell right or don't look right. Dogs are intelligent and intuitive.. maybe they sense that something is off about the puppies that they were forcefully impregnated with. This entire process is disgusting. Just because some rich people can't cope in a healthy way or can't be mature enough to let their pets go. This is a completely selfish act. There are so many dogs, puppies and other pets sitting in over-filled pounds and rescues that desperately need a home. If these people really cared about their pets they would let them rest peacefully. If they really cared about animals, they would go to a shelter and seek out a dog that has a similar temperament as their previous dog. But these people who are paying 100,000 are doing this for completely fucked up selfish reasons. This is just so wrong.

I've grieved the loss of my boy. I did lose my sanity, more than once. For those who dismiss anyone in this video for being insane, be grateful that you have not experienced insanity that comes from the overwhelming pain of grief. Understand that grief is a horrible process that the brain has to go through and it can affect anyone differently. Even if you think you have control over yourself, grief can rip that away from you at times.
I don't blame this guy at all for trying to find solace in any way he can. The pain that I felt from losing my dog I would not wish on anyone. I would wish that anyone that experiences that would have some way to relieve the pain. Until you've experienced that pain, I don't think you can fully understand how horrible it is. If I could describe eternal suffering i.e. what some would describe as hell, I would call it grief. Inconsolable pain so bad that you couldn't even imagine how bad it is, with no relief. Every possible joy robbed from you.
That being said, I would not, in good conscience be able to force a female dog to have babies that so frequently have health problems to the point where the puppies have to be euthanized. That is not how I want to honour my boy. But after knowing what the pain of grief feels like, I would never judge anyone who feels differently.
I can only imagine the experience of how it would be to see my boy as a puppy. I adopted him at age 5 and never got to experience his puppy years. I would find joy in that. Indescribable joy. Although I would be fully aware that any new puppy would never be the one I lost, I believe I could accept, in my mind and heart, that the puppy is a new being, and one that is just as special.

I guess you could just let them stop eating and eventually shut down, but why do that when you can arrange to have them go peacefully while you hold them, talk to them, play them some music etc. Obviously some animals, such as my old dog, somehow knew when it was their time and she fell asleep in my lap, and went back home quietly. That is not always the case unfortunately , but it's a hard decision that I don't think most people make selfishly. Say, if my dog had been having intractable seizures or could no longer eat or drink properly, etc then yes, I would have certainly considered euthanasia. i just lost my beloved dog and ive been so depressed over it. Id probably do some crazy ish like this if i could afford it. Then again ive read pet cemetary and watched childs play... id probably be asking myself if its really her essence...Besides that, im not sure i like this idea of forced surrogacy for the dog.

Ok this was not for his dog, it was for him. He should’ve just gotten another dog. This is ridiculous

this doesn't seem right, there are so many animals that need homes, it's wrong to clone your dog when you know they're not even going to be the same dog.

50/50 nature nurture. You can never have an identical dog. Genetically the same doesn't mean the dog will have had the same experience, the same joys, the same stresses, that form personality. Considering that, cloning will never be possible for mammals. Not even for plants really, because the identical environment day-by-day can never be replicated.
That said, this guy is really struggling as a Buddhist with such intense emotional attachment. I get it; I miss my cat; I miss my dad; I miss my great-grandmother. Let it go. Let your dog go and honour her memory. Get another one of the same breed and colour, but let that dog be a individual too.

My dog just passed away 5 days ago and even though she’s already cremated and my family didn’t want or let me keep its ashes, I can’t help but think if only I had the money I would cloned her or try to find her family tree to see if she has any living grand niece/nephews that I’ll be able to buy & adopt.😢 But reading your last sentence is kind of comforting to me tbh ‘Get another dog of the same breed and color but treat it as an individual’
