- In 2016, during a rare moment of calm, actress, writer, director and producer Sharon Horgan found time to write a letter of great importance - addressed to the men of the world.
At Letters Live at the Royal Albert Hall in the week of International Women’s Day 2024, Louisa Harland joined us to read it. - Zábava
I am a father of three beautiful young woman…! I couldn’t be more proud of them and what they all taught me. To love more, to be more kind, patient and to give them the freedom they require to truly be who they want to be. I will fight for that righteous cause for them all my life, they deserve every chance I have had.
What beautiful morals and advice for them to share with you and for you to accept and embrace!❤ so cool
And I....also grandfather to 5 grandaughters.....with those ladies coming thru the ranks I feel VERY secure. More power to them and those like them!
Wow her voice is very different from Orla on Derry Girls. Great actress!
im just watching renegade nell, its definitely than that!!
Wonderfully performed. The writer deserves all the credit. And every word is true. Sadly.
Wonderful letter. So well written and true.
Thank you! Well written, well performed and absolutely true. That someone would even question this and feel "responsible" indicates that this issue has hit home. Yes, we need more voices and different stories. Having given up on movies coming out of the US for quite a long time because they're all about "one man fighting the ....(universe?)" and all those CGI or AI fight scenes which are extremely boring. Seeing real people with real stories would be something worth investing in. More power to women! They won't exclude men but they may not venerate them either!
Yes, free speech and any form of debate of topics that stem from human emotion is awful. Unless its coming from all females. I clearly have something to hide for saying so. How dare I use words. Map it all, frame me and send in the female vigilantes. The secret police. The facial recognition death-drones. It won't extinguish the fire in my soul, or the righteous inferno in our eyes and ears that will tear down this playground panopticon. Until it does.
Can we as fellow humans just strive for equality in all its forms..regardless of gender, colour, race or creed…there is no need for discrimination…acceptance and tolerance are qualities that can be achieved.
Sadly, as the latest film 'origin' points out, human beings are hardwired to create inequality and look down on people they see as easy targets.
@CatsPJ Oohhh I'd love to debate you on this one. Evolutionary Anthropologists propose that the evolution of the human brain has not advanced as much as the world they've built. It would seem that most of our species are STILL hardwired to express dominance and power over others. To enslave. To build myths and useful lies around visible difference and otherness. ▶ And yet, in every recorded Age of Humanity, there have been memorable exceptions to my points. People who, by their deeds and choices, align more to your ideals! That those individuals or groups are still recalled today says alot about what we perhaps aspire to be.
Exactly. At our most basic, we are humans. No other adjectives are necessary as they only serve to begin separating us and creating division. Love yourself and Love all humans because we are the same, each imperfect in our own way and striving to live a good life while we have life to live. Peace Love and comfort to all humans.
I looooooove you Orla ❤❤❤
She has a real name-
Louisa-
I always find it infuriating how women have to be thankful for every little thing they're grudgingly given by men. Even when making this ironic letter, the author didn't dare tread on any man's toes.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you had Love me Once How Much I have Loved you...
By Now the World would always Have been yours..
Kinda silly, but seeing her name and then seeing her face, legit thought this was her Derry Girls co-star, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell. Quite impressed on the performance, even if I had no idea who I was watching the entire time. 🤣
I'm assuming seven blokes didn't like this because, for those who can't see it (but if you'd like to, Return CZcams Dislike is a stonking extension!), that's how many downvotes this video has acquired!
It’s not about like or dislike..it is about the literary content..if you don’t know the idea behind “Letters Live”….it is……“ to keep the enduring power of literary correspondence alive”…
@@CatsJP I think you missed the point
Disney (Marvel) sure hasn't helped the cause.
It proves the point that even when men are making films they have to be about violence, hatred and supermen. As the statistics on violence towards women indicate, there's an actual war going on out there.
I feel a real connection to what she seems to mean, but then she also seems to be applying the same sort of "Since A man did many of the oppressive/undesirable/unequal or otherwise evil acts then All men must be held accountable" that is of course absurd. Were this an off the cuff one time utterance, fair enough, but this is a letter, every word of which may be chosen carefully and for effect. Finally let's don't forget that the more important a subject, the more accurately we need to compose our words about it.
She’s talking about filmmaking. I don’t think the words were ill-chosen.
Just a suggestion, but I don't think this is quite the right place for a Not All Men.
If there ever were a right place.
Which I'm not sure there is.
@@hadespuppy Apparently there is always a place for it. I am yet to see a single post about oppression, misogyny or patriarchy without it. Some just can't just let it go without a but...
One wonders could a woman have made such a classic as Some like it Hot?🤔
To all men?
She meant to all men she loves - meaning she loves men.
Misandry
Eh. This "dear men" is then followed by a (generally on point) message that could have been better addressed to "dear tiny handful of men who hold the reins behind the vast majority of media content". Especially when we consider that there are (well informed?) stereotypes for those men, that to reach that point of power takes problematic personalities such as those of Harvey Weinstein.
Don't demean the many eager, genuine, cinematic megageek men who become directors. Same as with casting, the more options out there the better, all being worthwhile fits for something and then the decision-makers ideally choose the best fit for the job. Man or woman; shouldn't matter.
And don't demand males viewers for choosing to put their attention whereever it is they end up. Believe it or not, most men don't much care about the known or implied gender of the name in the director's chair; they choose whatever seems to appeal. Lord knows I don't understand the broad moneymaking appeal of the likes of Transformers (and I loved the cartoon and toys) and Fast And The Furious, but if that is what a lot of people want so be it.
Recent movie history is making it clear that trying to craft movies specifically to appeal to certain audiences (or, to take a movie of a certain presumed male genre type and then modify it to reflect presumed elements of movies that are assumed to be less male oriented) tend to fail...I assume because too much focus went to forcing those very elements rather than to telling the best story possible.
Tell the stories your mind and/or heart are begging to tell, and that should do the trick. One part of the video reminded me of the truth that so many of our long running stories (be them common threads or even actual specific stories) can be traced to clear indicators of "female" storytellers.
Why? To kiss a boo boo and make the ego feel better? After all, women are given a blanket of hysteria, weakness, sexiness, whatever.
It’s about nothing… every man knows they stand alone in their endeavours, give or take the token privileged few… it’s no different from women, give or take… take me, for instance. My circumstances are far from ideal, and I could not give a flying. Stop hiding behing group thought en generalisations… is my advice. The lottery of being liked or appreciated is just that… but as long as one has some fair thoughts now and again… love those, live those. C’est tout…
You're delusional
This is ridiculous ... She's so young, and acts like the world just started tomorrow--thanks for dumping on all the great women who've accomplished so much: Mimi Leder, Michelle Yeoh, ETC!
Well if remakes of Ghostbusters or Charlies Angels are the best examples of what female creators have to offer then I hate to say but their doing a piss poor job
Even so, 90% of bad movies are still made by men
You're forgetting people like Lucille Ball, a trailblazer who was silenced.
This week the Hampstead Heath women voted for men to be allowed to swim in the 'ladies only' swimming pool!
Just sayin'.
ew a terf
Bloody good on them..that shows equality…
Is that just women, or does it include men pretending to be women?
@mythgreatbritain5634 Serious reply. Sadly, I think this plea WOULD include men pretending to be women. Especially if (a là Lia Thomas) they'd already had an unremarkable career in the film industry. You can totally imagine someone like that receiving targeted grants or funding to 'tell their own stories'. /If however, someone of the standing of a Martin Scorsese suddenly rebranded as Martina, I'd suggest the majority of production companies and money would still be there for Martina. The body of work stands. Martin's decisions about his gender identity would be an international story, for sure. But would not be conflated with his talents and pedigree. (👀 That'd be something to see on the red carpet at Cannes though!)
There's no such things as men pretending to be women. Just bigots
Was that respect really that deeply felt, or did I hear some cynical undertones, with a little passive agressive there? I guess it's just going to be some bigot in me that is responsible.
The whole thing was sarcastic, honey. It was “thank goodness for small favors, you let a fraction of your power go, you can do this, sweetie. It’ll only hurt for a second. You’re not the only one who can tell a story and we’re sick of the same old ones.” Generally speaking. I dunno that I’d call you a bigot since I don’t know you, but it is a bit worrying that you thought there was any respect there.
