    The op is correct. This is clearly rejection by maternal bulbul. The father bulbul is the experienced parent, mother isn't. Not only did mom build an inadequate nest in an unusual spot, but it was not strong enough or correctly built either. Thus it continued to tilt and contributed to this sad outcome. The mother is obviously frustrated while feeding. The babies are weak and not properly grasping her beak to signal get to let the food go. So she repeats the cycle and gets further frustrated. Finally she eats the food intended for the babies. The issue is further compounded by mom feeding insects that were way too large for these babies. This further created frustration for mom. That's a lack of experience on mom's behalf. However, the father bulbul feeds without issues. Sadly the mother bulbul eventually kicks babies from the nest TWICE. That's no accident twice. Clear rejection due to failure to thrive because of inexperienced mother. The poor father bulbul returns with food to an empty nest. He's clearly confused why the babies aren't there.
    The op tried to intervene and replace the babies after the first rejection. Op had hope it was accidental. It was not an accident. Mother kicks the babies out of the nest a second time. She made her decision clear.
    Larger birds will throw a rejected baby out with their beaks. These birds are much smaller, with tiny beaks, thus they'll kick the rejected babies out of the nest with their feet. The action is obvious. If there was any doubt she repeats the process of kicking them backwards out of the nest. It's very intentional.
    They were failing to thrive due to insufficient feedings by mom. Dad was great, he did everything right. As the babies got weaker from mom's starvation, so did their ability to close their beaks around mom's beak. So inexperienced Mom didn't know to let the food go. As this communication issue continued, the babies further declined and weakened. Without Dad they'd have declined much sooner. Finally the babies were so weak and close to death she just rejected them from the nest.
    It's nature, it's imprinted within these birds to reject offspring that aren't strong enough to thrive and survive. It ensures the species has the best genetics. The weak are culled, rejected, or die. The strong and best genetics thrive and survive to reproduce. There's no point wasting time and resources on babies that aren't thriving. It's a natural act, there's no malice or evil intent. It's sad, but it's how nature ensures the best genetics are passed on and the weaker or defective ones aren't. Even if the weakness or issues we're caused by the parent themselves. It's sad. It's how nature works.

She's clearly inexperienced and lacking maternal instinct. The father did everything right. So sad when he returned to the empty nest with a small insect. He seemed so confused. He was a great father. Mom was either young and it was her first clutch, or she's seriously lacking maternal instinct to care for her young. Hopefully she'll do better next time. Better with selecting a nesting space and better with selecting the correct size foods and actually letting the food go! She caused them to become weak and fail to thrive. There were two different birds. Mom and dad. Mom was incorrectly feeding, feeding too large of insects, and not letting the food go when it was adequate. Dad was experienced. He feed properly, correct size, and always let go. Mom rejected babies by deliberately kicking them TWICE from the nest. Dad comes back with food to an empty nest, confused.
      With larger beaked birds they'll throw the rejected babies with their beaks. In smaller species with smaller beaks they'll kick the babies backwards from the nest. I've seen both of these done before.
      Hopefully mom does better with the next clutch of eggs. Hopefully she'll do better with selecting a nesting space, selecting the correct size foods to feed, and actually let's the food go. It's all learning.
      The babies were too far gone and weakened by the point they were rejected. They'd have never survived. While sad, it's nature to cull the weak and insufficient and care for the strong and thriving. In the animal world there's no point wasting time and resources on a baby that's not likely to thrive. Even if it's the mother's inexperience that causes the failure to thrive. It creates a stronger genetic line to keep the species alive. They intentionally reject any baby that seems to be off in anyway or weak. Sad, but nature isn't always happy.

    I think it was a tragic accident, not deliberate. The mother is inexperienced or potentially something else going on with her. Look at 19:05 where she begins to feed the chicks a worm or some other insect that is far too big for the chicks to swallow. Birds are generally smart across all species. You never know what's going on. In modern times, animals that act weird could have fed on or become exposed to chemicals such as pesticides, and over time it could affect them, and with relatively small bodies, it doesn't take a lot to damage their systems or thinking.

    • @Lyzi.B
      @Lyzi.B Před rokem +3

      No accident here. There's two birds, mom and dad. You're correct that mom was extremely inexperienced. She selected an inadequate nesting space, was feeding food too large to swallow, and refusing to let go of food that was correctly sized. She caused the failure to thrive in these babies which led to her rejecting them by kicking them out of the nest backwards TWICE. That's clearly no accident. In smaller beaked birds they'll kick babies they reject out of the nest backwards. Just like in this video. In larger birds with larger beaks they toss them out with their beaks.
      The father bulbul in the video was much more experienced and did excellent with his care. He fed them the correct size foods, and let go. Sadly mom didn't do the same. Her lack of care caused them to become weak and unable to thrive. Thus her own actions led to her rejecting them. It's not uncommon for new moms to be inadequate with care. They learn as they go. The saddest part was when Dad returned with food to an empty nest, confused. That's the part that really upset me. That wasn't mom. My heart broke for the dad. Sigh. Nature isn't always pretty or kind. Hopefully mom does better with the next clutch of eggs. Better with selecting a nesting space and better with feeding correctly.

      @DemonOfCoffee Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@zummyyou It's true she likely knew they were too weak to survive, most birds will reject weak chicks to save energy and resources (food), but that doesn't necessarily mean she knew what she was doing as a mother.
      Animals can be inexperienced with parenthood sometimes just like humans. The knowledge doesn't automatically come to them when they have babies, and the way she would occasionally bring back food that was way too big for the babies to swallow suggested that she wasn't used to feeding chicks in a consistent way. They were likely the first babies she ever had, and for birds it's rare for the first clutch to survive due to parental inexperience. It's not directly the mother's fault, but it is a shame.
