The Yamaha TMAX super-scooter isn’t going to be for everyone, but to dismiss it - like so many do - as being ‘just a scooter’ is to miss out on one of the most versatile machines on the road. It really is a true all-rounder.
First launched in 2001, the TMAX is in its eight generation, with over 350,000 sold worldwide. 85% have gone to homes in Europe and the UK, though the biggest market is Italy, with a 37% share of that chunk. France accounts for 34% of those sold, while Spain has 14% and the rest of Europe has the remaining 15%. It’s no secret that the UK takes just a fraction of these, which is why we only get the top-spec Tech Max version.
But have British riders been missing out? I rode just over 100 miles on the launch to experience the new model, on a variety of routes from city streets to motorways, and mountain passes to tight farmland tracks. And I’ve also spoken to several owners to find out why they keep buying TMAXs once they’ve given one a go…

T-max / super-scooters are very specific in the UK. If you commute daily you will already know about the benefits of scooters. Super scooters only work IF your commute is motorways plus city. I have been commuting 30,000 plus miles year into London. For the last 5 years... All of it was on a Super Scooter. They are actually brilliant & cheap for exactly that task

At roughly 5.5l/100km they're still quite thirsty - even slightly more than my previous ST1300 - which is strange for an engine that's less than half the size. My current PCX150 is super economical at 2.25l/100km, but unfortunately too small for the freeway.

I have found that I enjoy Scooters more than traditional motorcycles. I currently have a Suzuki Burgman 400 and a Honda Monkey. I have way more fun on them than I did on the BMW 1200RT and Honda CB1100 that I had previously.

A young friend who is used to riding large KTM adventure bikes bought a Tmax. I teased him and called it a Lambretta. However, he could really make it shift on the twisty mountain roads here on the Costa Del Sol. We swapped bikes for a bit one day up in the mountains, and I have to say I was very impressed, even though it had about 30 to35 bhp less than mine. The only serious downside I found was the seating position didn't allow me to stand up over bumpy bits of road.
He loved the bike. Except that it proved unreliable and needed quite a few jobs doing on it. So now he has moved on.

I had lots of Bikes in my life, including some very hot supersports, but..... It's the fourth T-Max I own, and I think I'll buy the 2022 version too. It's fun, and practical. You can peel ears on the ground and the next day go shopping and come at home with 4 bags. Besides, used value is very good, and You can count on that.

I had a 2012 T-Max. What a wonderful bike. A better motorcycle than many A2 'real' motorcycles (cough, Honda CB500, cough) and just a great all around ride. I admire Yamaha for keeping this bike going and continually improving it. I sold it and wish that I hadn't.

Thanks so much for your review. I keep hovering over pressing the button on one of these. I can't quite seem to do it, but that's more to do with physical garage space than anything else.
My friends will confirm I'm a bit of a tart when it comes to bikes, and I do tend to gravitate toward the 'Super' end of the motorcycle genre, but despite outward appearances I do give consideration to what's out there and what actually might make sense for me.
It's only a matter of time (and the aforementioned storage area) before I get one of these. My biggest fear is that I'll love it so much I'll never ride my other bikes! The tech, convenient storage, comfort and general package is appealing to me; although I must say that going from my usual bikes to an impromptu test ride of this model did feel a bit alien at first.
I'm currently going through an uncharacteristic sensible patch - perhaps due to being ever nearer to the big '50'; selling my track-only 2016 R1, yet another MT-10 (my fifth...... don't ask!), my Panigale V4 and 2019 RSV4-RF. I've even got an Anniversary R7 on its way - now that's an interesting bike too. I suspect part of this rationalisation will include the T-Max at some point, and it will be a welcome, much used, addition.
    All the best, Ed

I've tried automatic 'Twist n Go' scooters and never felt comfortable on them because it doesn't feel like I have as much control without a clutch lever, gears with a neutral position. Also the small wheel size made the bike feel really unstable (although I see the TMax has slightly larger wheels, they are not full size) and the seating position just doesn't suit me at all. I don't want to be sat on my coccyx with my arms and feet out in front and my back arched, I'd be crippled after an hour in that position !
The only thing I like about that bike is the locking stand, that's a really good idea, not difficult to bypass but it's a bonus.

I actually wanted to get one these last time I changed, what stopped me was that seat. At 6'2" I found that extra bolster behind the coccyx gave me a properly dead arse after 30 mins, so I'm a tad too big for that version and I suspect it'll be the same for this new model, based on what it looks like. Didn't have any of that on the X-ADV which is it's nearest competition I guess?

I have been riding bikes for 69 years and my last bike was an Enfield interceptor, a nice bike. I'm now on my 85th time around the sun and I love riding but as I have aged I have lost the strength I had when I was younger. Parking the Enfield in my garage the bike got a little out of balance and it could have fallen. So I sold it and bought a Yamaha Tricity 300 for one reason the stand-alone mechanism. Although it is 40kg heavier it is more manageable and easy to park having a low center of gravity. I have become a scenic rider and the Tricity ticks all the boxes. It is so easy to ride and sticks to the road very well. Recently Yamaha has ordered a recall to disconnect the Stand-alone mechanism due to the stand-alone not disconnecting when riding away. The reason most riders use it is at the traffic lights they don't put their feet down, I tried it and didn't like it so I don't use it in that way. Use only for manual pushing it around in the garage it is so easy. So mine has not been disconnected. All these new design scooters are cross-overs with many motorbike features. But let's face it they are not a motorbike but an alternative way of traveling that is similar.
I have lived in Perth Western Australia for the last 42 years and 9 months of the year is almost perfect motorcycling weather. The best part is you can ride from Perth in winter up north a couple of thousand kays and be in summer again all in the same state of Western Australia. One of my favourite places is Exmouth with the Ningaloo Reef close to the beaches and 320 sunshine days a year. Perfect for riding.

Loved my TMax but had to sell as it caused too much pain with pressure on my coccyx and ultimately lower back. It is no use having a bike I can only ride for 30 mins. At 6ft1, that seat hump was just in the wrong place for me.
This latest model looks great. Sad we can't have the yellow one, and despite the equipment list, £12.5k is too much for what is a very underpowered bike compared to the Honda 750s. Why do Yamaha only offer an A2 version? I now have a Forza 750, and it is far better machine for out of town work, faster and torquier, especially with a pillion.

I think yamaha made the choice of giving the tmax a slimmer butt compared to something like the burgman which to a lot of people, looks like a small whale.
The tmax also uses an advanced rear suspension with the engine and cvt mounted towards the middle of the bike and an independent rear swing arm that gives the bike a more motorcycle like ride.
I wish one of these reviews would discuss how the engine, cvt and rear suspension function on the tmax. Same setup used on kymco AK 550, BMW 600 scooter, I think Piaggio and peugeot makes something similar too.

the main reason for the maxi's to exist is for storage and comfort and the tmax only has the comfort because the storage is no bigger than the biggest of the small non maxi's
tmax is a waste of time and money
if you want storage get an xmax or burgman
if you want performance get a motorbike
if you need an auto but want performance while still being worth the cost then get one of the new auto honda's. or a honda cub if performance is not an issue

Love how these types of big bore scoots make bikers almost apologetic and insecure when they are talking about the positives of these bikes hahaha, hey its OK to say are fun and cool, sure it's no r6 or Duke... But it's a weird consept apparently today that something different to all the extremes can still be awesome... These types have gotten a whole ton of development and design in the last few years, like the Honda forza and the new Sym. These are fantastic and super practical every day bikes and on the wekend if you want your exreme pull out the panegale or the hypermotard

I really like riding so called super scoots, but unfortunately the two I’ve owned, when trying to part exchange them even at main dealers they don’t want to know or give you a very poor valuation, and a poor excuse why too! Ok if you plan to keep it forever I suppose.

Rossi has one, he knows shit from cheese. Fastest thing you need from A to B but a bit hard on the arse for 250 mile days on a motorway. I've had 4 super scooters anyone who borrows mine, loves it. Single disc variety lack stopping power compared to later R6 setup. 5 stars.

Doesn't matter how much they try to make a scooter look like a motorbike it's still a scooter, not one for me and I've been brought up with my father restoring old scooters mainly from the 60s.
If I had been riding back then I'd have been on a BSA or Norton

Have fun at 50 miles out and you are having range anxiety. That heavy piece of crap is not going to be fun pushing home and it's not like someone can just bring you a gallon of gas and you would be on your way. You are going to have to get that thing trailered home and then you'll have to push that heavy piece of crap into your garage. I can't believe anyone would be so naive about owning an electric motorcycle.

So how fast do you ride? 80, 90, 100 mph ? How often do you get it going that fast? Or is it just bragging rights? Kinda like Teslas that can go 0 to 60 in 2 seconds? After you do it a couple of times and scarring the crap out of yourself.

Would rather a cheaper bilke than being forced to pay for tech I don't want, too much time messing around with screens on the road and you'll end up riding off a cliff or into a ditch.
Got my A learner permit here in Ireland around a month ago and passed my IBT (CBT) around 2 weeks ago and am looking out for an xmax 300/400 or burgman 400. Not sure if I'll get one until maybe the Spring but I hear Winter is the best time for buying bikes.
I know I went for the A license and an Xmax 300/400 is A2 but A2 is plenty fast for me + I want to pass my A test on an automatic so I'll have to find a riding school with an automatic. The A2 won't allow me ride a Burgman 650 or Forza 750 so this is why I went for the A should I want more power in the future. In reality a tmax 560 is probably more than good enough, how much power is enough ?
The other issue for me is that it's very hard to find a 2nd hand scooter that's old enough and are all due belts and rollers that the owner has not done, I suppose I could do it myself but at 40,000 Kms or 20K miles any private owner I've contacted all say the belt isn't done.
I saw an Xmax 300 last week in a bike dealers and was surprised at how big the bike actually is. It even had an apron which would completely cover your legs in Winter which I though was pretty cool.
Anyway, can't wait to get on the road on 2 wheels whenever that will be.
