Chrono Trigger - 12,000 BC - Orchestral Cover Collection

- A series of fantasy, orchestral takes on the Dark Ages/Antiquity era from Chrono Trigger. This is my personal favorite era in the game!
I suppose I loved it due to the great constrast - one one hand, you see this beautiful kingdom with the best graphics on the SNES, you get exposed to the most brilliantly done music in the game, yet in the end you also see how it was built and crumbled due to exploitation, starting with an entire race of people and ending with exploiting the unnatural resource that is our favorite one eyed space tick, Lavos. Yep, that's me. It's a great story, is it not?

0:00 - Corridors of Time (Malcolm Robinson)
Ah, Corridors of Time. This particular cover has always been one of my favorite video game remixes - so I'm happy to have an excuse to share it!
4:08 - For Zealotry! (Emily Thompson & Rosie Samter)
I always found Zeal Palace to be such an underrated song, so I appreciate every cover of it, no matter how true-to-original or different it is! This one in particular I love because it's different yet fits the era perfectly.
8:14 - Dreams of the Virtuous (Sam Dillard)
This talented arrange combines Schala's Theme, Sealed Door, and Zeal Palace into one emotional masterpiece. Seriously, this is amazing. Sam Dillard deserves some respect!
13:47 - Black Omen (Time Rock Orchestra)
Time Rock Orchestra is a criminally underrated channel. I mean, they've remixed nearly the entire Chrono Trigger OST (plus a couple Earthbound songs) and they've done so incredibly well! This is no exception, of course.
16:51 - Ocean Palace (turnerofwheels)
I feel like a lot of Undersea Palace covers have this problem where they either go too different and lose what made the original special, or they stick too close to the original and fall flat in comparison. This perfectly walks the middle line, making it such a great cover!
20:30 - Zeal Palace (Mathew Valente)
This was to be the menu theme in the ill-fated Chrono Resurrection project. Oh man, that was like 17 years ago. But this still sounds so good.
25:12 - Enlightenment (Sam Dillard)
This one fits very well with the art I chose. I really like how this takes a "dreamy" approach to Corridors of Time with an ambient feel. It's different and I love Chrono Cinematica all the more for it.
31:49 - Schala's Theme (Micheal Hoffmann & Andrew Dunn)
One of my favorite Schala's Theme covers. This one has a really nice winter-y sound. It's hard to beat!
34:56 - Black Omen (Malcolm Robinson)
The Black Omen is my favorite final dungeon in a video game and I'd doubt anything would change that. A reprise of the Ocean Palace which somehow has even better music... Quite impressive!
37:50 - The Deep Beckons (Sam Dillard)
My favorite Undersea Palace cover. I love the buildup and swells, all the instrument choices are perfect, and the bits of Zeal Palace and Lavos' Theme make it all the more menacing. This is how we pictured the original when we entered the palace. Pure, unrelenting tension.
44:51 - Zeal Palace (Malcolm Robinson)
This is my favorite version of Zeal Palace. Perfectly translating the menace into a more orchestral form... What an incredible job Malcolm's done with his remixes!
48:59 - Schala's Theme (PPF)
This and Secret of the Forest are my favorite PPF covers. I highly recommend checking out his wonderful channel if you have a chance!
52:40 - Corridors of Time (String Player Gamer)
I really love the acoustic undertones of this piece. CoT suits acoustic very well, and the violin and choral bits suit just make it better!
56:46 - To Far Away Times (Malcolm Robinson)
Ah, To Far Away Times. What a magnificent masterpiece. This song and cover are objectively the most incredible things to have come out of Chrono Trigger. What a wonderful game!
Before we go, I must say a quick thanks to:
.The Chrono Trigger team, for creating this awesome game and soundtrack.
.The creators I've featured here. Thank you for being generous enough to let me share your wonderful work!
.You, the viewer, for watching. Knowing you enjoy this is what keeps me going.

@@NeoMandalore my life when I put on the FF8 soundtrack followed by this
Sitting through their music but no one can bend to tolerate yours 😭😭😭
God this game and it's music brings back so many memories...My grandfather use to love playing this game, and let me borrowed it as a kid to play, was so excited after watching him play it so much as a kid...I will always play this game once a year in memory of him. Love you grandpa!!
Perhaps they're even playing it alongside ye up in Heaven. 😄 Good times all around, and I'm glad ye have such happy memories of them!
I can't think of any other soundtrack, video game or otherwise, that fills me with as much emotion upon just hearing the first few notes. It's apt that the game is about time travel because these songs are a direct route back to my childhood.
I played CT for the first time one or two years ago. I am 27.
I LOVE SNES games, but Chrono Trigger is something very recent for me. And here I am, 100% nostalgic for that experience already. The music especially is absolutely magical. The proggy, whimsical, and epic proportions it goes to are pure bliss!
This game's truly special, and fittingly, transcends time. Never have I played a game that has aged this well. I have 0 "actual" nostalgia for this game obviously, but it's still one of my fav RPGs of all time.
Now that's the sign of a great game.
@@SirMalorak you ever play Trails in the sky? another oldish jrpg that stands the test of time. and its also still getting games today which is kinda insane to me.
Yeah, they pulled out all the stops for this game. Something to do with mr dragon ball himself I am sure. Squaresoft was truly a visionary developer back then. They were making the most beautiful video game media no one even knew was possible, and they set the bar so high that they made themselves irrelevant in the long run. Squaresoft will be immortal in spirit as long as millennial gamers breathe.
@@BEHEMONAUT Toriyama only had a hand in the art style, otherwise, the rest of the game was all other people as far as I know. They could habe gone with whatever other artist for the visuals and character and monster design, and the game would still be the legend it is today so long as the style was cool enough.
A direct route to childhood indeed. :)
I am currently in Japan with JET, assistant teaching English. Back home I used to listen to this soundtrack to get pumped. The combination of personal nostalgia and objectively beautiful/slapping rhythms always lifted my spirits. Helped me persevere. Gave my life's story a backdrop that gave washing dishes to running 10k extra meaning. I have had my share of homesickness and doubts here in Japan in my first few months and just rediscovered this mix. It has made my day and moving forward will be my go to mood lifter.
Well, I hope this helps motivate you! That certainly is a neat career path you’ve fallen into
Random question, do you know if it is possible to bring a pet with you in the JET program?
@@ironuckles haha, not sure. My instinct says no.
Man… ppl talk about ff7 but this to me is my go to rpg, the vibes, music and story was so great to me.
I've always prefer Chrono trigger to the FF series in general, but sadly CT is a one hit wonder and FF has like 700 titles.
I plsyed Chrono Trigger before a lot of the classic Final Fantasy fan favorites. I was always told to go check out FF6 or FF7 or FF10 cuz those are even better. Imagine the depths of my disappointment upon playing all of those games and feeling so underwhelmed and unsatisfied compared to how I felt after finishing Chrono Trigger.
Gonna mini-rant here. I freaking can't stand hardcore FF fans. They always overhype the story and characters, have trouble dealing with or even imagining the possibility that everybody doesn't love their fav game for super good reasons, and they follow that stupid logic where you can't have a negative view on a game you haven't played, but you can sure have a positive view on a game you haven't played.
@@psycholuigiman final fantasy is very different from Chrono trigger. They kinda appeal to different crowds, but ultimately I prefer Chrono trigger too.
@@4dojo True that. Not saying one is objectively better than the other. Honestly, I'm just irritated with the fandom. Never had any good experiences with them. Always pressuring me to play their favorite games, then getting upset that I didn't like it all that much. Sometimes even going as far as insulting me for my taste. When they would talk about negative opinions of the FF games, they would frame them as misconceptions or misunderstandings of key mechanics and moments that make people think they don't like a specific game, rather than just accepting the possibility that maybe some folks have different preferences in games. It's like dealing with kids who think they know what you like better than you know what you like, sometimes. You'd think after dealing with it most of my adolescent and adult life I'd be less annoyed, yet here I am ranting and complaining about it in a random CZcams comment section about Chrono Trigger of all things. Man, I got issues sometimes. Haha
@@psycholuigiman Honestly, every game has issues, and ff7 fans need to admit that. My favorite games of all time are probably Smash Bros and Breath of the Wild. Both of those games are full of glitches and things that could be improved, but I have no problem admitting that. And I absolutely love Chrono Trigger, but there are several things in that game that could have done better too. So for me the sign of a good game isn't that it's perfect, but that the things that it tries to do it does well. Chrono trigger has great music, great characters, an immersive universe, multiple endings, a compelling story, flashy movesets, character combos. It's not perfect, but it is amazing.
Literally never played a chrono game but holy moly this music slaps like no other
Should seriously play it, best one to play is on the DS, the new updated Steam version is also a good one to get into.
Personally I think there’s no better way to play it that the original SNES way. Get the ROM from somewhere at prepare to have a one of a kind gaming experience!
Chrono Trigger y Chrono Cross son increíbles historias, no te arrepentirás al finalizar los juegos y cambiará tu vida. No te obsesiones con los gráficos ( En su momento eran un ¡Boom! )

play it... it holds up. I played it when it released and I've played it many times over the years. Last time I played it was two years ago. I'll play it several more times before my days are over.
The opening, Corridors of Time is PERFECT music to cycle to at sunset
12,000 BC is probably my second favourite time period, mostly because of the music. Thanks for this amazing music again
It’s probably my favorite because of the music and everything that goes down in that time period.
Arriving at Zeal was the second most memorable experience playing Chrono Trigger. Beating Magus was the first.
same for me, but fighting Magus, the victory I tend to forget without thinking about the battle first
I was horrified of Magus now that I think about it. They did such a good job building him as a villain.
Dreams of the Virtous is so beautiful it made cry, seriously respects to Sam Dillard
Based Masato Kato. You gave us Zeal. And it sall rise from the oceans once more.
"The King has returned." - Janus Zeal, Chrono Cross Radical Dreamers Edition, Secret Ending
Blew my mind when I realized Zeal was meant to be like Atlantis, The time is perfect too for the destruction. Square loves that lore with all the crystals and stuff in Final Fantasy too.
They weren't afraid to bring life to myth. It's inspiring. That's why it isn't done in the West. Good on these brave people.
Interesting to note that the destruction of Atlantis (or in this case Zeal) causes the global flood - and essentially ends the ice age.
Then the survivors of Zeal/Atlantis co-mingle with humans on earth and it's the beginning of current modern-day civilization.
This game was made in the mid-90s and they're following along with the ancient apocalypse theory that people are theorizing today. There's even a show about it currently on Netflix.
Square seems to have been very in tune with ancient myths even back then.
@@cagnazzo82 Yep I've been into that stuff for about 4 years now. You start to see it everywhere. The East is much more open to these ideas and incorporates it a lot it seems in media!
Oh no! Lavos is still collecting resources from the planet!
The Corridors of Time remix is killer, wish they had an extended version of it.
This hits in a place that's difficult to describe.
You had to be there.
Thanx for posting this :)
You're welcome! Indeed, you just had to be there to understand that special magic
I love how we love the idea of Zeal, because the "real" one ended up corrupted and destroyed.
For a game about the passing of time, a timeless ideal is fitting.
The highest highs are built on the lowest lows. We see the totems of the past and we strive to achieve their successes, but without the pain baked into their systems.
man im becoming obsessed with these arrangements
i dont know why i feel a distinct sadness when i listen to this beautiful piece of art. often wondered if it was only me who felt that way about this song.
It's because it's a perfect musical theme for what it's representing. Keep in mind how this fits into the larger Chrono Trigger story by this point: We've started at a present of modest advancement, been to a future post-apocalypse, went to 600 AD to a Medieval period of sorts, and even been at the time of cavemen, millions of years prior. At this point, we think we have a pretty solid bead on how the timeline progresses...
And then you get to 12,000 BC, and you discover the kingdom of Zeal. More advanced than anything even humanity of the future has ever made, a place of wonder and miracles where literal dreams can be made real and actual _magic_ is widespread and accessible... and yet, the tune reminds you, on some subconscious level, how impossible this anachronistic civilization of mankind at its peak in Antiquity is, and that it cannot last.
Corridors of Time is a memorial to a height that mankind reached, lost, and will never reach again.
@@PeterDivine damn bro that's like. fuckin' deep.
@@PeterDivine I believe that such a civilization may have existed in the Antediluvian period.
It is the point. The world at this point is drowning in mellancolly, and slowly degenerating
Its nostalgia.
This hits the biggest nostalgia moments of my life. The music, gameplay, and the story it hits deep. Thank you so much for this, no other game hits corids like this.
Hey, no problem! This game is certainly an inspiring one, I can definitely attest to that.
MOST RPG lean to make you learn english properly anyway if you want to understand every little jokes and specific sentences...
This level had the most revelatory interactions and even puzzle elements. I always wanted to explore every crevice of this map hoping to find something new or hidden. This map reminds me of the part of shevat in xenogears where you find hidden items and play a fishing mini game of sorts.
Absolutely. The intricate interactions and the way to incorporate those hidden puzzles and secrets are tricks today’s developers should learn from

A truly excellent pick for a favorite cover!
Wow. Excellent selections and arrangement! A perfect journey through all of the revelry and ruin of my favourite time as it impacts all time.
Chrono Trigger is the perfect RPG. I was lucky enough to play this as a 12 year old kid with my brother.

You’re very welcome, I’m happy you’ve enjoyed it!
Thanks for posting this mix. Some of these were new to me.
this level without a doubt is the best of the entire chrono trigger saga I feel when a friend asks me is it worth having reached this point I tell him it was worth every measly second of my existence
Wow man these were all so powerful! Thank you for this!
Holy shit, these are all fantastic! absolutly sublime. I have not been enraptured by music like this in a long while!
I started playing video games at 7 on the N64 back in 1997, played on most SNES games only on my GBA. Now in Japan for the last 11 years, I bought a SNES and 15 (great) SNES games, just beat all 3 DKC, and now at the end of Chrono Trigger, at the âge of 34. I played all the major Nintendo games since the SNES now, I have all the consoles even here in Japan, and I can say this game made it in my top 10 easily. I play it with my 7 years old, who sometimes help me with some kanji I can't read, and he actually can already.
Checkpoint:
Here I am, at 37, living with my family and coming to understand that time, oh, time, it doesn't come back! Therefore, our actions need to be thought out, even more so when anger takes over and takes your last breath of patience!
Don't be carried away by anguish, understand, that every day is a new day, with new things to be seen that were not seen yesterday :)

Ooo some new ones here!
4:08 For Zealotry! starts off completely terrifying and atmospheric I love that.
16:54 Ooo that panning synth fits so well with the orchestra, and the ominous low brass and percussion along with those trumpet melodies are just oozing with tension, beautiful.
25:12 Enlightenment is gorgeous, especially at 30:48 everything seems to tie together with that piano, brings me back to Minecraft music.
31:49 I adore the cello in Schala's theme. 33:10 Omg and that countermelody.
48:59 This is a unique instrumentation for Schala's theme, really tribal, I like it!

I wonder if my "dad" would recognize any of these tunes; Breath of Fire 3, Chrono Trigger... that was towards the last bits of him still paying it some mind. Sometimes I thought he went ahead both because that's what anyone would do and also so that he would still have all the answers for me, even in the game world.

Nostalgic...over 8000!!
Best of the best when it comes to Chrono Trigger music.
Show.... Amazing, Perfect.... I Love Chrono Trigger....😍🇧🇷🇺🇸
There are a lot of great video game soundtracks, but I truly believe Chrono Trigger to be the absolute #1 best video game soundtrack of all time.
Also, just to name an example of how incredibly good the sound design is, their choice to just let the Ocean Palace theme play even during battles in that segment of the game shows their understanding of how music can convey emotion. The mood would be completely broken if the battle theme interrupted the Ocean Palace music during that part of the game.
In my mind, this game consists of three distinct parts, each ending with an absolute whammy of a track. The first part is what leads up to the first fight with Magus, undoubtedly one of the most renowned boss fights in all of gaming! The 2nd part ends at the Ocean Palace, another incredibly iconic moment. And lastly, the fight with Lavos, culminating in one of the most incredible pieces of music ever conceived, aka To Faraway Times, which is probably the saddest track in the game. Truly makes you feel like a grand adventure has finally concluded. It makes me tear up every single time I hear that lil ending jingle towards the end of the song 😥
What a great analysis! Absolutely agreed. It’s like each part represents the climaxes of your journey as you approach what you realistically expect to be the final boss at that point - Magus with the focus on 600 AD that occupies the early game, the Ocean Palace marks the mid-game focus, and To Far Away Times being the true culmination after the game is over. They all build together to keep a story that feels intriguing and suspenseful on multiple levels.
good‼️excellent❗️
This has always been my favorite song from Square games. I love it even as a standalone. The story for 12000BC is so intriguing and the music really elevates the whole part of the story. The only Square music that comes close to it for me is FFVI. These two games, imho, have the best music of all Square games.
Amazing songs, Chrono Trigger is great.
Indeed. It’s birthday is coming up soon, so I’ll do something for that!

LOL
I like to imagine Black Omen as a playable part of 1999 A.D., since the dungeon theme doesn't fit any of the other time periods in the game, and since clearing the dungeon feeds directly into Lavos
I usually mix it in with the 12000 BC stuff since that's when it first appears, but that's a fair point
@@LavosTheOneEyedTick You can play through the Black Omen 3 times. 1000 AD, 600 AD, and 12000 BC. It's also the only way to get a full set of top armor. You get it by stealing from Queen Zeal's hands and face (Again, you have to this each time though the Black Omen).

RIP Akira Toriyama... fantastic music for fantastic game. did you notice that beginning of "ocean palace" was similar as some John Carpenter's movies?
The music is perfect. But for the black omen, they knocked it out of the park.
I always loved going to the furthest point in time, and attempting to enter the black omen, only to receive no response. Super eerie. But then slowly working my way backwards through time and conquering the black omen each time period until I get back to 12,0000 b.c.

Well… I’d say you’re in luck. With the advent of sharing the ROM, you can find this SNES treasure online like pretty much anywhere.
I like this enhanced edition. It almost feels like a remake of the game but for a MegaCD version, topped with anime cinematics and all.
I always found the remastered ports disappointing especially since I think their cinematics didn’t mesh well with the original pixel art aesthetic. I would love a remake with this style and more focused on making the cinematics fit well within the game

Back when square was on fire. chrono trigger, FF6 (my all time favourite game) secrets of mana.. Etc. Good times
I am very sad at how AAA games now demand 1000 people to work on a game for YEARS. It is very impressive to see them come together still, but consider how many bangers Square and Enix put out on the SNES in just a few years. Now it takes them many, many years to make a single game.
SNES was awesome. AAA was just a few dozen, super talented folks, who could all share 1 vision. Now you have a lotta people who I reckon are working on such miniscule things like a character's hair. and nothing else. Hard to put passion into such a small cog in such a huge machine I bet.
This isn't "DAYS BEFORE BETTER NOW BAD", but it's why I've come to love Indie games! They ooze the same passion my childhood games did. A small bunch of folks sharing 1 cool game idea. It rules!
@@SirMalorak the times are more demanding, and any lack of passion is more because of corporate officers and capitalism, or purely your biased imagination, depending on the game
